Have you ever heard of the Magnus archives podcast? I think it's very interesting but it feels a bit weird to sort all fears into 14 15? simple categories but I can't think up a fear doesn't fit within the simple categories, Perhaps I'm uncreative

Also why are fear of manipulation and the fear of spiders in the same category? web themes? So silly

Anything sufficiently complex has a tendency to accumulate taxonomies. Psychology is hardly exceptional in that respect. Diagnoses. Political ideologies. Personality typologies. The more complicated a subject becomes, the stronger our impulse to divide it into orderly categories. It makes discussion more manageable.  

Classification has its place. 

It's the beginning of inquiry, not its absolute conclusion. Categories are approximations. They describe tendencies. Any psychiatrist who mistakes a diagnosis for the entirety of the patient has stopped studying the patient altogether. 

The boundaries currently established are fallible to nuance. Fear accumulates, overlaps, and acquires new associations until separating one phobia from another becomes, to some extent, an exercise in interpretation. Present the same patient to several competent psychiatrists and you'll likely receive several equally defensible formulations. 

My assumption is that the categories are symbolic rather than clinical. A spider weaves a web. A manipulator does much of the same. Both rely upon entrapment and patience in a metaphorical comparison. Clinically, however, they have rather little in common. Arachnophobia is ordinarily a specific phobia. The fear is attached to a tangible stimulus—a spider, or the anticipation of encountering one. Fear of manipulation concerns agency, autonomy, and coercion. Loss of control over one's own decisions. They may coexist in the same individual, but they arise through different mechanisms. I wouldn't mistake such categories for an authentic psychological model. One can hardly understand their own life and emotions, yet there are billions of others on Earth each with their own stories and thoughts.

How many memories have never been told? How many songs never written lost to history? How much of history will never be known?

Humans cannot fully process the sheer amount of details in so many people. A crowd who faces a singer may memorize their face, but the singer will never remember the entire crowd nor their lives.

Understand this, and learn to account for the absence of knowledge your mind will never be able to process.
