Aims to Inflate: Agent of Assistance by CYBERDYNE101
So, as promised, here is the Huragok Plush I made for a friend! It bends and GLOWS! :D :D :D YOU too can make one, and here’s how:
Materials: Navy fleece, magenta feathers, black thread, black safety eyes (3 different sizes), fabric paint (blue, glow-in-the-dark blue, purple, & glow-in-the-dark purple), stem floral wire, and poly-fil stuffing.
Step 1: Cut your pieces as shown.
Step 2: Fold all the tentacles in half “hot dog” style, pin tentacles & tail, and sew with a 1/2″ seam
Step 3: Turn inside out, and stuff. Fold the tip of the wire in on itself so that it doesn’t poke through your fleece, and insert it. Once fully inserted, create a loop with the ends of the wires, so it also doesn’t poke through anything.
Step 4: Ok, this can be a little tricky, but here it goes. You’re going to sew one side of the body by sandwiching layers together, and then just repeat the process with the other half of the body. First, sew the skirt (a.) to the main body (right sides together). Then, pin the tail & tentacles (b.) in place. Lastly, pin the body bottom (c.) in place (also right sides together). Sew as shown, stopping at the tail’s halfway point. Repeat the process for the other side (sew skirt to body, pin other set of tentacles & tail in place, pin other half of body bottom, and sew, all right sides together). Secure the wires in place with a few whip stitches, especially the top tentacles so they remain upright. Sew the main body pieces, right sides together, leaving about a 3″ opening to turn it inside out.
Step 5: If you survived that last step, the rest is more straightforward. :) Flip your plush inside out and it should look like this. Stuff, and sew closed.
Step 6: Sew a pleat in each gas-bladder, which I’m calling a “bump”. :) Sew a 1/2″ indent/pleat on each head piece, on the “right side”.
Step 7: Add the eyes. Stuff. Insert turned in wires to the main head and to the side pleats you made. Bend the side wires to create an organic wave. Secure all the wires to the head (I did this by creating a small loop & whip stitching it to the fleece). Turn the ends of the wires in, cut small slits into the main body where you want to attach the head, and slip them in. Attach the head to the body with a ladder stitch.
Step 8: Ladder stitch the gas-bladder “bumps” onto the main body. A couple of inches before you close the stitch, stuff. Then, close.
Step 9: Fray the “skirt” to make it look more organic and less uniform by cutting small holes in it.
Step 10: Paint blue and purple where appropriate. Then, paint with the glow-in-the-dark paint where appropriate. Attach the feathers with hot glue, and paint on the feather stems to extend its glow.
Step 11: DANCE! Because you just made a badass Huragok Plush!! ;)
