Heidelberg is a city of romance and it will capture your heart because it offers character and charm in abundance. Heidelberg is well-known the world over and is a constant favorite among worldwide travelers. The main attraction for those who visit Heidelberg, is the Old Bridge across the river and the Heidelberg Castle that sits on the slopes of Mount Konigstuhl some seventy meters above Neckar. It is the paradox of seeing something so wonderful in a state of such beautiful ruin that gives Heidelberg Castle and its park such a fascinating atmosphere. The essence of German romanticism, it is like experiencing something from a different world. The magnificent ruins that are overgrown with ivy, reflects the influence and majesty of the castle's former dwellers, the Wittelsbach dynasty. Built as a fortress with towers, casemates and moats in around 1300, this castle perched high above the town developed over four hundred years into a symbol of the feudal power of the Palatinate Electors of the time. The oldest still noticeably residential building is the Ruprecht wing with its brilliant Renaissance fireplace.
Another charming place is the wine cellar. The minute visitors go into the cellar, they are greeted by the cellar master and court jester Perkeo. He works twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. He is also made of bronze and somewhat small, but yet friendly. The cellar also house one of the largest wine kegs in the world, The Great Vat, in which it has a capacity of 220,000 liters or 58,000 gallons. The Great Vat was installed in 1751 with a direct connection by pump to the main banqueting hall. There was not once any hearsays of wine shortage on the Heidelberg Castle formal meals.
One must-go place when visiting Heidelberg Castle is its garden. Its visitors has spent hours in the garden and still find the garden unseen exquisiteness. In the garden visitors will see several large grottos which are on the upper balcony, there are several beautiful statues and fountains and little benches with their history. The most noticeable statue is Father Rhine, representing the most important river of Germany. The statue rests on a stone bed, surround by water. He is not that hard to recognize; there is not too many white statues of a half-naked man with a long beard around.
The great arch famous as Elisabeth's Gate is located near the entrance. Belief says the gate was built in a single night by Prince Elector Friedrich V in 1615 as a birthday present for his English princess, Elisabeth Stuart. The charming little gate was severely weather warn and was partially restored in 1949. The unique pillars are significant with their leaf work and creative floral-patterned. It definitely is a must see, while visiting the Heidelberg.

The Heidelberg Castle – Heidelberg Germany
Old Bridge The first Heidelberg Bridge was built by Karl Theodor 1742-1799 in which explains it's official name "Karl-Theodor-Brücke". The bridge was rebuilt 9 times; more than likely it was a victim of flooding. In 1788, it was finally rebuilt entirely in stone and braced by 8 posts. The double-armed bridge gate comes from the late middle ages. The towers served the bridge keeper not only as an apartment, but also as a dungeon for prisoners. In 1945 both rooms above the gateway were renovated as artistic apartments.
