Today's wasp of the day is Zatypota solani!

Credits

Spiders are a favorite for many parasitoid wasps, so that doesn't make wasps of the genus Zatypota that special. What DOES make them special however is that these wasps are known to influence their eight legged hosts' behavior. Researchers are still unsure of how exactly, but the larvae of Z. solani are somehow able to compel its spider host to construct a cocoon for it. Once the larva finishes off the spider, it uses the prebuilt cocoon for its pupation. Making silk can be quite taxing after all, and spider silk is much stronger than any insects; outsourcing that job to a spider it was already going to eat is just max efficiency on the wasp's part.

Neve chuckled low in her throat. "It's not exactly a luxury holiday destination, but something about it is a little romantic". She looked up at the stars peeking through the lead-grey clouds, tiny points of light and beauty far above, where the Blight and the war against the gods could never reach.

Alana breathed in deeply, then wrinkled their nose. "Ah, the romantic scent of Blight on the breeze. Though, to be fair, it's still better than the Treviso canals in a heatwave".

They finished their hot chocolate, and gently squeezed Neve's arm. "Come on, hopeless romantic, we should turn in. Got a hot date with some Darkspawn tomorrow".

3. Worst fight they’ve ever had

Sera and Lavellan

From the Friendship Headcanons Ask Game:

OOOOH! They actually have had quite a few, about the elfy elf stuff, mostly. There's has not been a smooth friendship, and I think it has helped for them that Lavellan is older, so she can kinda understand that Sera is working through some stuff, and she's used to making allowances for people.

There was the one after Mythal, of course, about the gods (though my Lavellan didn't drink from the Well).

There was this one that wasn't a fight but Sera screwed up.

She was shoving her food around at dinner. It was good, Inky had cooked, like she always did when they were doing things. Made those little flat bread things to scoop up the food with, and Inky had caught a fish, by hand, laying down along the riverback with her hand in the water until she’d caught it all slippery by the gills and pulled it up laughing at her success. Inky’d tried to show Sera how she did it, but the fish nibbled at her fingers, and they’d been all slimy, and she’d pulled her hand out of the water shaking the water off her hand in disgust.

“You don’t like it when things touch you when you can’t see,” Creepy had said. “Stepping on cold, still hands in bare feet.”

“Shut it!,” she said angrily, thinking fiercely of arrows.

“Cole,” Inky said gently. “Sometimes people need to work through things on their own. Why don’t you go talk with Solas?”

“I don’t need to ‘work through’ anything!” Sera snapped as she stormed off. “Nothing to think about. It’s just creepy, is all! And who likes fish anyway!”

She liked fish, she thought miserably, as she ran her spoon around the soup in her bowl. And Inky had caught it and looked happy, and that’s why Sera did pranks, to make people look happy who ought, and make people mad who shouldn’t.

And Inky had quietly made the fish she’d been proud of catching, but wasn’t anymore, for dinner, and given Sera extra soup and bread instead of fish, and hadn’t made a fuss. Inky never made a fuss. Just sat there hiding her hurt so no one could see.

“But you like fish,” it said, wondering, “Stolen, on a stick, hot in your hands as you ran away laughing. The stall owner chased with a shaking fist, but he was happy you would have something hot.”

“Shut it, Creepy,” Sera said, but she wasn’t mad about it this time. Inky’s eyes had brightened up, as she ate.

She reached across and stabbed her fork into Solas’ fish and came away with a big forkful. She stuffed it into her mouth and chewed happily.

Inky laughed, and Solas glowered. Not serious, he was watching Inky smile too, but he was playing the game with Sera, to make Inky happy. Elfy was okay, when he wasn’t talking about what-we-were or talking all confusing like. Maybe Creepy was okay too. Just this once.

But I think this one, when Sera was going to prank her and found out about her vallaslin was the worst. Lavellan had been hiding the rest of her vallaslin from Sera because she was pretty sure Sera was going to get upset about it, and they did have a fight about it.

She’d hidden them around Sera until she had been found out because Sera had been planning on trying to prank her by putting beetles in her clothes while she was bathing and there had been some heated words about ‘elfy elves’, and ‘you shouldn’t be ashamed of your people’, and ‘my people are people-people not stuck up prancers whining about not as good as we were’ and ‘don’t take this out on me’ until Sera had said, ‘hold on, turn around’, and she’d been confused and complied and Sera had looked at her ass with calculation and said, ‘how’re ya supposed to moon anybody? S’all covered up, even when you’ve got no breeches on’. Then Sera had snickered and said ‘no breeches’, and she had laughed with her and they had both accepted the apology as intended and all was forgiven.

20. Something they disagree on I kinda already answered it here while talking about their arguments: he has a great respect for rules that she really struggles to follow. But they also disagree on food (he's for sweets, she's for savory), and ways to cast magic (he's too slow, she moves too much), and how tragic(tm) consequences can be every time something doesn't go according to plans (well, he plans and she... doesn't).

21. How do they annoy each other? This was my favorite one, and I've already answered it here. And, since you usually say that in this case I can pick another question of my choice...

8. A time they got in trouble together Kind of related to above, because... (ok, this is not friendship related but romance related, but hey who cares) I know they've been caught at least a couple of times doing it in their Keeper's aravel right after training and... it was Adahlen's idea!! Because yes, she's a free girl and is silly!adventurous, but the boy's got some kinks and the idea of doing something inappropriate in a "prohibited" place wouldn't leave his mind ;) When they got caught, by the Keeper himself, Ayanne immediatly offered to get the blame because she didn't want to ruin his reputation (while hers was already lacking lol), but in the end they just shared the blame and it was the right thing to do :')

After accidentally shaking the DAI tag like a bag of treats and seeing so many lovely people get excited, I figured... well... maybe we should actually do this???😭

If you've ever wanted to contribute to a community Dragon Age: Inquisition zine, that being through art, writing, poetry, comics, fake codex entries, or other creative works etc, this is your chance to help shape what the project could become!

The interest check will remain open until July 20th!

This is not an application yet! No pressure, no portfolio, no "please prove yourself before joining the Inquisition." This is simply a way to gauge interest, gather ideas, and make sure we're building something the community is excited about!

for lavellan and dorian friendship ask game: 1, 10, 15, 17?

From the Friendship Headcanons Ask Game:

1. What were their first impressions of each other?

Dorian thought that the Herald might be Vivienne when they first burst into the chapel until he saw her use the mark. Vivienne has way more of the Herald air about her, and It was Vivienne, Varric, Solas, and Lavellan. It made sense to assume the well put together human mage was the Herald. So seeing this rogue (admittedly a quick and deadly one) whip out the mark and seal the rift was a surprise. But he was taken very quickly with her wit, and it quickly became a mutual admiration party. Lavellan, on the other hand, was instantly entertained with Dorian's 'oh good, you're here. now help me close this thing, will you?' She's automatically predisposed to protecting mages from being a hunter for her clan, and Dorian was showing himself to be quick witted, curious, and clever. She was also deeply impressed by his integrity at being willing to stand against his former mentor because what he was doing was wrong, and that was before they fell into the Dark Future together. But the fruit basket moment was where they really clicked.

10. Do they double date (if both are in a relationship)?

Does running around the Hissing Wastes killing Venatori and uncovering ancient Dwarven ruins while Solas and Bull play mind chess count? Lavellan and Solas don't really date, and they also don't actually admit they are in a romantic relationship either. Bull picks up on it sooner than Dorian does. Everyone's pretty sure they had something going on when they disappear for Crestwood and after they come back and Solas is snarling at everyone who asks and Lavellan is being a pillar of ice, but then Lavellan is still bringing Solas with her everywhere, so maybe not?

15. How has their relationship changed over time?

You know, i think they started off on a very good footing with a good first impression, and then really it just was all confirmed as they got to know each other better. Lavellan has seen Dorian as sort of a First, and thought that he would be awonderful Keeper when he makes up his mind. She's so proud of him for deciding to go back to Tevinter to try to make it better. Dorian, I think, was quite hurt when she stepped into the Fade without telling him, but ultimately realized that she was right, that he would have tried to convince her not to go. They made up about it. There is always a piece of each other that they have difficulty understanding because their backgrounds are so different, but they still love each other very much.

17. Any secrets either one is keeping from the other?

Look, Dorian is orders of magnitude more open than Lavellan, and she feels like she needs to protect him, so yes? He's got enough stuff to deal with about his father and Tevinter, he doesn't need her problems too. This is the note she left him before heading into the Fade with Solas. She really did just say 'something like that' to the question, 'when this is over, you'll be off again'. He did find out, though. Because Harding told him. Then he found the note.

Dorian, if you’re reading this- what do I say? You know already. Just. I’m sorry that you’re going to be Archon, and I’m so proud of you. You’re going to do a wonderful job. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do. And bring Bull to Minrathous, this time. Don’t do this alone. Not if you love him. I told Rook that drinks were on me at the end of this; I slipped some gold into your belt pouch with this note before I left. If the Cobbled Swan is still standing, would you do that for me?

And she avoided confirming her relationship with Solas. And she didn't tell people about the trouble with Clan Lavellan.

Dorian, on the other hand, does tell her things, but he tends to be flippant about it.

1. What were their first impressions of each other? They don’t remember :) They’ve been playing together since they were born, basically. For both of them, the other has always simply been… there. The same way you’d feel about a sibling. Sure, not all sibling do get along, and not all childhood friends last forever, but that’s why they are super special to each other <3

3. Worst fight they’ve ever had Mmm this one is hard. The one with the worst consequences was of course the breakup, but that wasn’t a fight at all. But I feel like their worst fights still go around the same issue: Adahlen being too strict about rules and his role in the clan, and Ayanne asking (rarely consciously) to go against it for her. Honestly, she really respects him for being so loyal and focused "on the bigger picture", and he really admires her initiative and adaptability and lightness. But there are some boundaries neither of them are willing to cross, and that certainly caused some friction before.

29. What are they proud of each other for? They are both extremely proud of each other and, especially now that they're older, of whay they become, and they keep saying it, being the best cheerleaders ever. Especially since they both know the full "journey" they both lived, will all the hardships and the doubts they used to have :') He'd go around telling everyone his childhood friend literally fought Gods and saved the world, and she keeps being amazed at what an open-minded yet reassuing Keeper he's managing to be in these trying times.

The Inquisitor can get put on this pedestal - a shining beacon of hope, a divine symbol of victory, calm in the chaos. And you can absolutely play a very compassionate, open-minded Inquisitor who's kind - a positive example of leadership.

But what always gets me is the scale of the decisions and judgments they’re forced to make and the horrifying consequences. Choose the mages or the templars, and one of those groups is left to suffer in horrific ways - torment, torture, death, madness, mutilation. Thousands are left to violence inflicted on them, force-fed blight. Then there are the consequences that ripple out from those choices too - villages enslaved, people forced into manual labour, innocent people killed, ordinary lives ruined because of decisions made from a war table by the Inquisitor.

Those are the choices the Inquisitor has to live with. Every time they look into the eyes of a blighted templar or a blighted mage before cutting them down, they’re killing someone they left to their fate. Someone who might have been saved, if the Inquisitor had chosen differently.

What does Solas say? "Sometimes terrible choices are all that remain."

And imagine the people who’d hate them for that.

Then the Inquisitor has to sit in judgment on a throne and decide the fate of individuals. And in the words of Josie, lives should never be used as currency. But in war - in a supernatural war - they are and the Inquisitor can use them as such. Do you use those lives for your own needs? Do you cut them down in vengeance, or give them a punishment that fits the crime?

And better yet - what if they’re good at the Game?

My own Inquisitor chooses Briala. It’s one of the few moments in the story where I let my Dalish Inquisitor make a selfish decision, one that’s meant to benefit her people. But that decision results in the death of the Empress, and while that isn’t what she wanted, it happened, and now that's another person's blood that stains her hands.

So now you have an Inquisitor who isn’t just making battlefield decisions. They’re wheeling and dealing in secrets, spying, blackmailing, and exchanging information through the shadows. Whether they love the Game or hate it doesn’t really matter - they still sought out the secrets and manipulated powerful people - they pulled the strings of a massive political and military dynasty.

The War Table missions throw in even more consequences depending on what choices you make in succession. Maybe they don't feel as tense as we only read of the consequences, we don't see them with our own eyes. There are a series of Grey Warden missions that if you choose poorly, can push them almost to extinction. And how many agents and assassins did the Inquisitor have at their fingertips to deploy at will? It continued on even past Trespasser - that pesky Inquisitor, getting involved in Nevarran business - who do they thing they are?

And whether you have an Inquisitor who revels in the role or rejects it, the Inquisitor still enacted judgment. They still made those choices and caused irrevocable harm to other people. They were always destroying a world that belonged to someone else. They were always making people living comfortably, very uncomfortable. Solas has dialogue in Veilguard about how his own rebellion made comfortable people, uncomfortable - it would seem if anyone knows what the Inquisitor faces best, it's him.

I imagine some people being delighted to see the great Eye and Sword emblem of the Inquisitor marching into town - while others feared it, or hated it.

And what will the propaganda say about our beloved Inquisitor two hundred years from now, especially considering what was erased about Ameridan? Considering how history changed the tales of the Fen'Harel - the Dread Wolf?

Dorian seemed almost downright prophetic when he said Magister Pavus couldn’t come to Skyhold and be seen with the “dread Inquisitor.” Imagine a servant in that inn, working quietly in the back, overhearing this conversation. They catch that one title - the dread Inquisitor - and whisper it to someone else. Then that person whispers it to someone else, and before you know it:

The Dread Inquisitor, indeed.

So, how does all this weigh on a person?

How does your own Inquisitor live with their decisions?

I think it's very easy for an Inquisitor to take Solas' path entirely, and bear the responsibility for everyone else's choices. And that can lead someone either to eat themselves with guilt, and take failure personally, or to head down the path of being a tyrant, because its their responsibility, they might as well be in control.

My Inquisitor headed off into the Fade with Solas precisely to avoid becoming a tyrant, because that's where she was definitely headed. She had really had it with Orlais and their civil wars in the midst of world ending crises.

I just created a side blog @dragonageevents. Designed to help track all these wonderful event weeks we have. There are a lot of them going on, which is awesome! But its all run by individual blogs, and there is no real way to know what is happening on any given week. So!
