I am alive
A message of self-empowerment from the heart of DIY culture, following the new wave of protesters in the 90âs using Non Violent Direct Action to stop construction work on new roads in London, and at Solsbury Hill, where the first tree-top villages were built on the slopes of an iron age hill fort. Though these battles were lost, the war on roads was won.
Using archive footage shot over the summer of 1994 from roof-tops and tree-tops, I Am Alive reminds us that good planets are hard to find, and that we must all stand up and be counted in the eco-war.

Live Before You Die
Travelling the length of the country and back again with a pair of horses and gypsy caravan, Live Before You Die is the ultimate horse-drawn road movie, following a band of Travellers with handcarts, goats, donkeys and ponies along green lanes to the fairs and festivals of England.
Shot by Tom LLoyd on a hand-cranked clockwork Russian super 8mm camera during a 9 month journey, the footage remained un-viewed for 13 years until seeing the light of day in 2008.

On this day, 20 February 1988, 20,000 people in Manchester marched against Margaret Thatcherâs homophobic section 28 law, which made it illegal for public bodies to âpromoteâ homosexuality, which included banning schools teaching the âacceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationshipâ. The law was abolished in 2003, although later Conservative prime minister David Cameron voted against the complete scrapping of the ban. Current Conservative prime minister Boris Johnson voted in favour of scrapping section 28, although he had previously compared gay marriage to bestiality in a book he published, and referred to gay men as âtank-topped bumboysâ while working as a journalist. Learn more about homophobia and the struggle against it in the 1980s in our podcast episodes 27-29 about Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners.
