Hey All,
I’ve moved Robyn over to a lowkey multi, @apcgee. Refollow over there if you still want birb adventures.
sal.
He smiled again at her kiss but fell silent once she settled in. It was nice, being able to open secret passages with a word instead of a door handle. It made carrying her much easier, and he didn’t have to wake her with unnecessary fumbling. He carried her through the most neglected and forgotten passageways of the castle and down the steps to the dungeons to his common room. Only once they were in his dormitory did he set her down at the edge of his bed. “Let me find you something dry to wear. Can you stay awake that long?”
Sitting upright, she offered him a sleepy smile and a small nod. Holding her finger to her lips to remind him to be quiet, she jerked her head slightly towards his sleeping dormmates. They’d never complained to her about her presence in the dorms (and if they had any sense they wouldn’t complain to Sal either), but not giving them reason to complain was only polite.
sal.
“One day, I really will tell them to respect their elders. It’s my turn, after all. Did I ever tell you Merlin said that to me once when he was here? I thought I’d die laughing.” Merlin was another warm, safe subject for Sal and always had been. It was nice, getting to mention him - the opportunity didn’t arise often. He sighed. “But fine, I suppose you’re correct, it’s far less trouble to go back the way we came. It guarantees I can get you to bed faster, and that seems like the proper thing to do.”
Her only response was to press her lips to the underside of his chin, adding the barest nip at the tail end before nuzzling into his neck and letting the sway of his gait rock her into a light doze.
sal.
He laughed when she checked, amused at the notion that she either didn’t know he appreciated them or needed to make sure they were still there. Either way, it amused him. “As you wish.” He handed her his shirt before sweeping her up in his arms without any more provocation. He pressed a half dozen tiny kisses against her jaw and started to carry her back to the castle. “Shall we sneak back in the way we came or just walk in the front door? I think the doors remember us. Otherwise, I think I’ll have to chop them down and make firewood of them.”
Looping an arm around his neck and leaning into his chest, Robyn steadied herself in the carry. A giggle escaped her at his idle threat against the doors. “I think the doors would behave. Any patrolling professor might not be so understanding.” They really couldn’t be blamed for not understanding why it was okay that these two students were out past midnight, wet and half dressed, or why the doors to the castle swung open so obligingly for them. Plus, getting lectured by their professors was always irritatingly awkward.
salnichaeisms.
Sal watched all this with a look of wry amusement on his face. His trousers were sticking to him in terribly uncomfortable places, but he did nothing about it. Since he was meant to carry her, he shoved his feet back into his shoes and let them tie themselves as they were enchanted to. “Am I carrying you or are you going to make use of those lovely legs of yours?”
A glance at her own legs as if she wasn’t sure he was really talking about them, then she giggled. “I think I’d like to be carried,” she said, holding her arms out to him. “Give me your things to hold.”
sal.
He laughed - he couldn’t help it. “Cold-blooded animals are the ones that do not get cold. Warm-blooded ones do, including birds, if memory serves. So I suppose you have a point.” He left another kiss on her head and grinned. “Alright, I suppose we should move, then.” He shifted out from under her and sat and gathered up his own discarded shirt. He had no intention of putting it or his shoes back on, though. “And I could carry you. I did insist you stay close.”
Tugging her jumper on over her head, Robyn didn’t pull her arms through until after she’d peeled off her wet blouse. After wringing it out, she shook it straight, frowning at the unavoidable wrinkles before she wiggled back into her skirt. Standing up, she paused for a moment and frowned, before doing some more wiggling that ended with her wet knickers in her hand, also being wrung out. That was terribly uncomfortable.
“All right.” Wet things folded up in her arms, she smiled at him. “I’m ready.”
manichaeisms.
Both arms settled around her as she fitted herself against his side. “Mm… Don’t leave it up to me. I’m part snake, according to legend, so I am quite content to stay here in the grass all night long.” He pressed gentle kisses to her hair and smiled. “We can head back any time you like, my love. And I hardly intend to banish you. In fact, I am quite insistent that you stay right where you are all night. Walking might be more difficult, but I’m sure we can manage regardless.”
Something was mumbled into his shoulder, of which the only intelligible parts were, “coldblooded, get cold”, “could carry”, and “no hollow bones.” She allowed herself a few more moments of comfortable snuggling before she blindly gropped behind her for her jumper and skirt, pulling them closer. A prelude to getting up.
sal.
One arm looped around her waist and his other hand reached up to brush back her dark hair. His smile was soft and warm, the sort of smile only she ever saw. “Always might have been sufficient.” It was gentle teasing only because he didn’t know at first how to respond in kind. It overwhelmed him every now again how deeply she loved him in return. His thumb brushed over her cheek. “It’s only ever been you, Robyn. I’ve never loved anyone else, and I never will.” For once he had no eloquence to match hers and no way to fully express how he felt, not really. “I’m at a loss for words,” he admitted. “Nothing I say could ever fully express it. I just… I love you, now and forever. I suppose that will have to do.”
“It will do.” The way she smiled and melted against him undercut the casual way she said it. Rendering Sal ineloquent was high praise indeed. Pillowing her head on his shoulder, she closed her eyes. “Let me know when you’re ready to head back inside.” A soft, content murmur to which she added, “I’m not climbing back up to the tower tonight.”
sal.
He breathed a contended sigh and reveled in her touch, staying still for a moment even after she’d moved. He ran his hands over the surface of the water, feeling calmer and more content than he could ever remember being in this lifetime. He watched her move to the shore and followed only when she beckoned him, but took his time wading through to the edge of the lake. He lay down next to her, catching her hand in his, and brought it to his lips the moment he was settled. The grass pressed against the bare skin of his back. It was a familiar feeling, though he couldn’t quite place when he’d felt it before. He glanced at her, then followed her gaze up to the stars. “I love you, you know,” he said softly. “Even the stars are different than they were, but that’s never changed.”
Rolling over to her side, half laying on him, she kissed his cheeks. “And I love you, Salvatore Oram. I shall until every star in the sky has burned out and time itself has stopped. Then I shall love you in that moment forever. No matter where you go, or who we become, I will find you, and I shall love you.”
sal.
He loosened his hold on her enough for her to move. It was hard not to laugh still, but laughing required more oxygen than he’d taken in before going under. He kissed her and gathered her up in his arms so when he stood, she came back up with him. He kissed her again, still chuckling, before pulling back just enough to speak. “Truce?” he offered. “I think all the fight in me has disappeared for the time being.”
Clinging to him, she nodded. “Truce.” Rolling her forehead against his, she sighed and smiled, before releasing him and heading towards the shore. Wringing out her shirt, she lay down on the grass, staring up at the sky. Without looking, she put her hand up, a gentle demand for him to come and lay next to her.
sal.
He laughed again and charged at her, somewhat impeded by the water. He grabbed her around the waist and spun her around for no reason other than that he could. “Ha! I’ve got you now!” It was stupid and ridiculous, but he was still laughing. He didn’t understand it at all, and he was laughing. He meant to drop her, but instead merely let them both fall backward into the water, though he didn’t let go this time and held her under with him instead.
Her cheeks were starting to hurt from so much smiling and laughing. Managing a breath before getting pulled under, she didn’t try to escape. Instead she shifted and wiggled until she could wrap her arms around his neck and kiss him, releasing bubbles to tickle their lips.
sal.
The water hit him full in the face and he laughed. Gods, had they ever been this young before? He couldn’t remember, but it felt beautiful in the way simple things always did when you could fully appreciate them. He sent another, bigger splash back at her, and then another in rapid succession. “You can’t win!” he declared, feeling absolutely ridiculous. That was the kind of thing he’d have said to his five year old brother. “Might as well admit defeat now.”
“Never!” Overblown dramatics as she send a double handed splash at him, giggling. Oh, she’d lose eventually: he had all kinds of advantages over her. But she wasn’t going down without a fight and wouldn’t let this end so quickly.
sal.
He spat out the rest of the water and nodded. “Yes,” he answered, somewhat breathlessly. “Yes, love, I’m fine.” He smiled, as much to reassure her as anything else. As soon as the opportunity afforded itself, however, he shifted and swiped his hand across the water, launching a mini tidal wave right at her. Served her right anyway, really.
An indignant yelp, more for the effrontery of the attack than any major effort, and all concern fell away. Instead, her grin sharpened into something more wicked as she sent a wave back at him. If he wanted a water war, he’d get one.
sal.
He was about to respond to her when she dove beneath the water. He frowned, waiting for her to come back up, but she didn’t. Instead, he felt her grabbing his ankles. He laughed, and in the process of trying to help her get him under, lost his footing and fell properly anyway. He got a mouth full of water and had to find the surface again to cough it back up. It was harder than expected when he was laughing.
Her own laughter faded as his coughing went on. “Are you okay?” She thought he was still laughing, but it was hard to tell, and all roughhousing on her side had to stop until she was reassured.
