If you're a romance reader in the USA, this Saturday, August 15 is Bookstore Romance Day
It's a day for indie bookstores to celebrate that oft-slagged moneymaker of a genre and treat readers of kissing books very nicely. You can find virtual and in-person events across the country. Many stores are giving away free gifts or having big sales.
I'll be in Portland OR and online for several events. Come hang if you're in the area!
Overlap between antiblackness and antisemitism in fandoms:
- Jewish-coding and Black-coding ignored and erased e.g., character’s experiences are intentional allegory for Jewishness or Blackness, but people insist it’s about queerness instead.
- The desire to see Black and Jewish characters humbled. This is usually in retaliation for some perceived wrong due to a white character. Gets worse if said characters are successful in their fields, then it’s portrayed as “punching up”.
- Ethnic features being erased (skin lightened, curly hair straightened, slimmer noses ect).
- Discussions about antiblack/antisemitic tropes in fandom spaces dismissed because “real bigotry is more important” (“real bigotry” is then never discussed).
- When the main characters are Black/Jewish and yet the fandom won’t stop talking about that fucking white guy.
- Black/Jewish characters made out to be mean, usually depicted as bullying the poor white character (bonus if the “agonisers” are men).
- Infantilisation specific to non-white characters.
#Major parallels with Angry Black Woman/Domineering Jewish Mother stereotypes#Because western society sees Black and Jewish womanhood as unfeminine#It's also interesting how they see Black and Jewish masculinity with Black men being hyper-masculinised and Jewish men being feminised#Both are cast as less-than-human foils to the shining white knights of mainstream western masculinity#with those interpretations being the justification for how and why these communities can be an underclass in their society#anti-Blackness#antisemitism (via tikkunolamorgtfo)

The Star Wars fandom regarding Mace Windu and anakin
On the dubject, we also should talk about how fandom has more fire for Black/Jewish characters who are heroes and who are just generally right about everything than fandom has for white characters who are canonical fascists, mass murders, etc
Lighting up my Din Djarin candle from bath and body works… y/n wishes she were me
no official maul candle from bath and body works but I did get a cranberry one the other day which might mean something to you if you were on Star Wars rebels tumblr circa 2016/2017

devastated to find out that fae romantasy isn’t just the porny version of rath roiben rye
like wtf is the erotic appeal of The Fae™️ if it’s not weird rules and contracts and alien expectations and bizarre magical power exchanges and curses? you take that out and you just have sparkling aristocracy
I’ve been told that they’re very well endowed with such equipment as certain women find desirable, my liege. At least in theory.
yeah well who isn’t these days
I know there's a lot of particularly lady blorbo feelings in the realm of "she wouldn't like kids" as a response to the easy, sometimes lazy tie up of "blorbo has kids and is a great mother" but consider the other options of:
She likes kids! But doesn’t want kids, and so doesn't have them.
She doesn't like kids broadly, but she does like hers.
She's an awful fucking mother who never should have had kids who didn’t like or want them but had them anyway.
She desperately wanted to have children but it didn't work out.
She didn't have kids or particularly want them but she's a good stepmother.
So many options that vary in domesticity but aren't a black and white "loves/wants/has kids vs hates/doesn't want/doesn't have kids".
I know all of these women by the way! The feelings around this can be much more complex! This isn't even me arguing against your blorbo hating kids it's just 'noooooo don't buy into a false binary you're so sexy!"
It’s so funny how like. Spock is queer bc of the subtext, the Otherness inextricable from his character, meanwhile William Shatner was handed the straightest man of all time on paper and fumbled the bag bc he couldn’t stop giving Leonard Nimoy fuck-me eyes and now he lives in a bi Kirk hell of his own devising, forever enduring the conshatquences of his shactions
some sketchbook scans with handsome man
not now kitten. daddy only planned the first half of his wip, and now he has to figure out what the fuck to do for the other half.
that being said I'm not actually always opposed to conflict free fluff I am just opposed to the characters having their claws filed down for it. you can stick them in a coffee shop au it should just still feel like you sat the two worst most insane people on earth in a starbucks
BABYLON 5 1993 – 1998・4x19 Between the Darkness and the Light
Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.
