the problem with watching buffy the vampire slayer for the first time when you're 13 is that it will fundamentally reshape your brain chemistry to the point where literally all fiction becomes buffy the vampire slayer in different fonts. "watch another show!" you might say, and believe me i have! i promise i've watched many other shows since i was 13. but the problem is that all those other shows as well as films, books, podcasts etc. are simply deviations of buffy the vampire slayer to me. it's the holy text, the primary source. everything else is just commentary.

Some ICT Thoughts (and also spoilers!!!)

I’ve been considering why Bérénice is so shaken up by Carla’s body dysmorphia and why she ignored so many obvious signs that her girlfriend wasn’t okay. And I think it’s because, since day one of their relationship, Carla has been so confident and sure of herself.

She’s the hottest girl at the institute, she’s wealthy, she has great clothes. She’s the girl who gets told she’s pretty and says “I know”, and yes, Bérénice is aware that she has an outer shell that’s harsher than who she really is, but I don’t think she realized just how much of Carla’s confidence was an act.

Bérénice just found out that Carla was traumatized by the bullying she experienced as a kid, so traumatized that she’s developed an eating disorder. And that’s upsetting. But what’s equally upsetting for Bérénice? That if that picture hadn’t been sent to the whole institute, Carla probably never would have told her about the bullying or the trauma.

It’s a pretty big thing not to tell a significant other, not to mention a best friend. I’m wondering if Bérénice had this image, this idea of Carla that’s now been shattered, and now she’s asking herself, do I even know her at all?

It was so heartbreaking when Carla was saying she wanted to feel beautiful and Bérénice went “you ARE beautiful”, but it also highlights that Bérénice is struggling to wrap her head around the disorder. When she broke off the engagement, it honestly felt cruel and will no doubt send Carla into a spiral.

But then I have to remind myself that Bérénice is 20 years old, she’s just a kid. Of course she has no idea how to coach her girlfriend through a very serious eating disorder. In her mind, the wedding planning exacerbated the disorder, so now, no wedding. But yeah, she fumbled the bag with this one.

It’s just tragic all around and I’m so glad that Constance and Rose are aware of the situation, because Carla is going to need some adult support in the coming eps. Really feel for her. Wish Souleymane would return for a couple eps, I think it would really do Carla good to see him.

Oh and big shoutout to Joséphine, because despite how awful Carla has been to her, despite Carla outing her addiction, she did not hesitate to support her. Loved when she said to Constance “if you don’t do something, I will”. Just really showed Joséphine’s character, she’s a good person. Hope she and Carla can build some kind of friendship after all of this is over.

Edit: They're going with an amnesia storyline on TOP of the eating disorder storyline!! It's classic soap content and honestly I'm eating it up.

ITC Spoilers (again)

And....she's back, my favorite gay, my sweet little cinnamon roll, making the worst possible choices with the absolute best of intentions. We stan!

Bérénice is planning the perfect proposal for her girlfriend, and by perfect I mean incredibly flawed and a terrible idea. But hey, seems good on the surface, though.

She has acquired a ring that's a family heirloom (meaningful!), she picks the location based on where she and her girlfriend had their first date, she's designed a dessert inspired by her girlfriend to present to her. And the whole thing is going to be totally low-key and chill. Lovely! Just look at the pretty dessert! She can't fail, right?

Wrong. Gosh, if only she were dating Joséphine or Zoé or literally any other woman than the one she is dating. Because Jesus Christ, Bérénice, nothing about that proposal sounds like something Carla Furiani would like.

She will hate the ring (it's a ruby and super basic), she's mad at how much you're baking lately and very body-conscious, so presenting her with a dessert is insensitive on both counts, and oh, right, Carla is the flashiest bitch on the show, so she is going to want something showy. Like, come on, this is the bitch in question:

Low-key will fall flat my guy!!

Even her sister Constance was like 'huh, so, you really don't wanna do something a bit more special?' LMAO

And I'm sorry, I love you Bérénice, but I cannot let you off the hook for ignoring Carla's phone call RIGHT AFTER she told you that she felt like you were putting everything else ahead of her in your list of priorities. Babe, you are not beating the dumb blonde allegations. The last time you saw her, your interaction ended like this:

She could not have been more uncomfortable, pay attention!!

I just...it's like Bérénice constantly forgets that she is dating the most reactive, high maintenance woman on the planet, and every time she's faced with some of Carla's emotional whiplash, she's doing her surprised Pikachu face. Girl this ain't new, you know what you signed up for!!

And finally, special shoutout to Joséphine for saying 'this dessert is so romantic, if Carla says no to you then I'm available, haha!' because I personally found that so fucking funny given the context of everything going on.

But also, if Carla ever hears her joking like that, well...I'm not sure there will be any survivors ya'll, RIP.

Look, Bérénice is my fave and I adore her. Just look at her cute little face!!

But by far my favorite thing about her is that she is simultaneously very in tune with her girlfriend's emotions, while also being absolutely dogshit at comforting her.

So there will be times when Carla's behavior is all over the place, and Bérénice goes 'this is about your dead abusive dad, right?' and hits the nail on the head. But her solution is to go behind Carla's back and spill secrets to Coline, which makes Carla feel 100x worse.

Or she minimizes whatever Carla's feeling by saying something like 'hey, no, you're perfect' while solving nothing.

But these last few eps, Bérénice has really topped herself. Because Carla recently told her to her face, 'hey, I'm struggling, I feel totally sliced in two, like I don't belong to my bio family OR my adopted family, and also I'm self-conscious about my weight' and Bérénice's absolutely batshit bananas response to that is 'ohhhhh I bet if I propose marriage that will cheer her up, that way she's part of a THIRD family'.

But fine, so now she's going to bake an engagement DESSERT for her girlfriend, a young woman who is very obviously developing some kind of body dysmorphia. That's her plan.

And she's developing the recipe alongside her friend Joséphine (on the left, below), a girl Carla's been jealous of for months. That's how Bérénice is handling this extremely delicate situation.

Like, I just...how can someone so intuitive and patient also be so fucking clueless?? I love her.

Carla's got three general modes, babe: 'Mean and happy, mean and sad, and mean and self-destructive'. We're on number three at the moment, please keep up!! 🙏

Oh and special shout out to both Joséphine and Zoé for not snapping at Carla this episode, because boy oh boy did she deserve it. Zoé is such a good friend!!
