My Life Since Nursing School
As I scrolled through Facebook, I passed multiple posts of my old nursing classmates talking about how they’re soon to graduate and how their finals are over. Im not graduating with them next week, and that’s okay.
When I began nursing school I was ecstatic and so invested in studying, pushing fun things away such as family events and hanging with my friends. It was my future, after all. As the semesters went by, the classes got harder and harder. I went to clinicals once, sometimes twice a week for 12 hour shifts each. I realized shortly after my clinical experiences that this was something I didn’t want to do. I was determined to push through, however since I had came so far.
This past summer, I was met with the worst class I had ever taken; pharmacology. I flunked my first exam, had a meeting with my professor, failed the second exam, and passed my last two exams including the final. My score: 76.44. To pass the class I needed to make a 77, or a 76.5 to round up. I begged my professor for extra credit and looked at my exams with her to see if I could swindle one more point. My professor looked me dead in the eyes and told me “maybe next time you won’t change your answers”. I was devistated. I sat in my car and bawled my eyes out. The night before my final, my boyfriend and I broke up and he moved out of my house. My life felt like it was crumbling down. I had entered the lowest point of my life. I wasn’t going to graduate with the people I had taken 2 years of classes with.
From then on, I retook pharmacology for a second semester. I was a bit broken, but determined to finish so at least I could have a degree. In the beginning of my semester I met my best friend, Tyler. He asked me on snap where I got my eyebrows waxed and I told him, and the rest was history. He was way more outgoing than me. I was the introvert who stayed home and studied all the time, and Tyler was the party animal, always trying to find something to get into. As we hung out, I let my academics slip away from me, I became more extroverted, and most importantly LIVED MY LIFE. There was not one day we were not riding around at 2 in the morning listening to Nicki Minaj and going to crazy places like Texas or New Orleans (I’m from central Louisiana). We smoked everyday (still do) and I met so many friends and interesting people including my boyfriend. I had an amazing time, and honestly still am.
This past week I got the news that I failed pharmacology, once again. I quit my old job of 2 years before school was over so that I could have the weekend off. I picked up a new job the same week, and now I’m the manager of it one week later. I’m looking into starting school for aesthetics this January, a field that I’ve always wanted to be in.
Just to wrap things up, the moral of the story is that doing what you want will treat you better in the end. Of course I’m upset seeing all of my other classmates succeeding with me not being there, but I think maybe it was for the best. I’m happier than I’ve ever been to be honest. I have a boyfriend who would give the world for me, a family who’s kinda pissed at me for failing but I know they love me, new friends who always want to have a good time, and ambitions to start school for something I’ll actually like. I don’t look at myself as being set back because I failed nursing school, I see it as something telling me that I just need to go a different path. Nursing isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay. I’m still breathing, there’s still time to make something of myself, and there’s so much to be happy about.
Me: Alright I’m going to be super productive tomorrow!
Me, the second my alarm goes off:
No sugar coating. Just straight burning.
