Lena was running as fast as she could. She’d been spotted by the coppers, and if she got caught again, she’d be in major trouble.

Which was when she slammed into a man built like a brick shit house.

“Shit! Fuck, watch where you’re goin’ mate!” She glanced up, before recognising him. “Oh thank fuck, I thought you were a copper. C’mon, they’re after me!” She snagged Jack’s hand and started running again.

The vigilante was in hiding from the police himself. They had gotten word that the man known as Soldier:76 was in town and there was quite a price on him to bring him into custody. He was ducking in an alleyway and ready to make a break for it when someone slammed into him. Before he could say a word he was tugged down the street.

“Wha-what did you-?” A pair of squad cars cut off their escape route and the two slid to a halt. Now it was his turn to lead the escape. “Come on!” He barked at her as he took her hand and pulled her into another alley. At full sprint Jack jumped up and tugged down a fire escape ladder, sticking his hand out for the girl to grab. Once she was in his grasp he pulled her ahead of him, not wanting to slow her down. They made it to the rooftops, Jack peeking over the edge to see the cops had lost their trail.

“Alright...what the hell did you do?”

HANA

A loaded question? She could only wonder what was going on through his mind at that moment. Biting down on her lower lip, she sat there awkwardly for a moment wondering if she should ask him about it but she knew that that could appear as rude and intrusive so she chose not to. Leaning back against the wall, she fiddled with her gun momentarily before sighing softly and going against her previous idea, “I think we all have a lot of issues to deal with no matter what our age is.” She was only nineteen years old and she had seen things that she wished she had never seen before.

Fighting was a horrible thing and she hated every second of it–the only reward she would get from it was the happiness that she was helping people. Her comrades were stronger than her both physically and mentally. While she was happy to be able to help the Korean Government, sometimes she wished she could go back to being a professional gamer and just seeing the violence on her screen. “I get scared sometimes.”

“Kid, I-” He turned around to say something and paused, taking a moment and staring at her before sighing to himself. “I’m not scared, okay? I’ve just...seen too much blood in my time." He heard Angela’s call, causing him to turn his head for a moment before looking back at the young gamer. “You’re still young; you have a whole life ahead of you. You shouldn’t be gambling with it on the battlefield. Leave the fight to the washed up ones like me.”

With that, he turned and headed into the exam room. He sounded harsh, but he didn’t want Hana to end up like him; battle scarred, grizzled, his view on the world completely changed. He fought and nearly died to make this world a place where kids like her could live a normal life. But she was here, risking it all like he did. Jack sat and let Angela run her tests, staring at the wall as his short interaction played through his mind. That was, until Angela told Jack who he would be going on assignment with.

“Song?! You’re sending the kid in there with me!”

His voice echoed through the room, able to be heard from ears outside the walls.

Whatever happened at King’s Row, Jack wasn’t happy in the least bit. Having to go against his orders and send a strike team to handle the situation was bad enough, but where was Gabriel? Where was the Blackwatch backup? Jack had to send Lena into battle, and she had never even seen the field before. He was furious, honestly; the man who he had grown with during their time in Overwatch seemingly left him on his own. He marched through the halls, eyes darting between corridors.

“Reyes!”

He practically barked through the hallway, his voice echoing down the hallway. He let out a grunt as he turned the corner towards Blackwatch’s wing of the base. If he was anywhere, he’d be here. He stopped at the door, two men standing before him. “Stand down.” He ordered them. They didn’t move, causing Jack to raise his head and stare at them down the bridge of his nose.

“I said...stand down!”

As she listened to him, she was tempted to give him a mock salute and something along the lines of ❛ Yes, sir! ❜ but decided against it at the last moment. While she knew that it wouldn’t have been the first time the soldier had been teased in such a way, she also knew that the situation didn’t call for it. Especially when it could take a turn at any moment. Instead, she simply nodded her head. ❝ Yes, I mentioned that I was planning on visiting the site to document the spikes in the area’s climate, but our friends running intel had reported some Talon activity not too far away from the site. I’m not exactly sure if the two are linked, but Angela suggested that I have some backup just in case. Normally, I would say that I can take care of myself, but there’s a difference between taking on one or two agents compared to three or four. ❞ She continued. ❝ Snowball and I can only handle so much at once, you know. ❞ Referring to her assisting bot packed away safely in her bag behind her, she smiled. ❝ Still, I’m grateful that you’re here. ❞

It made sense, now that she explained it; there was something valuable not just to her, but to the world there and if Talon was there she couldn’t handle it alone. Capable of fighting or not, Talon was not a group to mess with. There were times Jack struggled to deal with them. “Understood. Stay close and only attack if instigated.” He kept his head low, a slight crouch in his step as they made their way through.

“I must say, what you’re doing for this world and for everyone on it is admirable. The world the way it is, people don’t focus on these problems. They’re worried about Talon, omnics, terrorism. The threat you focus on goes unnoticed. I guess what I’m trying to say...” he paused in his tracks, looking over his shoulder at the scientist as he nodded. “thank you.”

“Listen!” The strike commander was now practically barking at the young girl, face beginning to glow red, “My first choice was to toss you in a cell and let you rot with the rest of Los Muertos! You better thank your lucky damn stars that you’re not there! You want respect from me, you damn well better earn it! But I will not, and I repeat, WILL NOT be talked to like this! One more outburst and you’ll be left on the sidelines permanently!”

He took a moment to compose himself, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. “Maybe rehabilitated was the wrong word, but put yourself in my shoes. We picked up two former gang members in the matter of a week; you and the cowboy. I have superiors up my ass about it, but I have enough trust in Gabriel to take the shots, for him, Jesse and you.”

It was at this moment that an alert blared over the comms in base and a screen illuminated before them, revealing omnics storming King’s Row. Omnics...great timing. Jack pinched the bridge of his nose before looking at the hacker. Right now, her skills would more than useful.

“....Suit up.”

Mei blinked a few times before she suddenly smirked and winked her eye. ❝ Then I guess it’s a good I can handle myself from all ranges, huh? ❞ She replied with a wave of her gun; the tip producing a large - and very sharp looking - icicle. ❝ Besides, even if I do have to step out and risk my life every once and a while, I trust people like you to watch my back. ❞

The soldier sighed to himself, knowing full well he wasn’t going to stop the scientist from joining him on this mission. “Fine...but the moment it gets hairy in there you find cover. I’m not losing anyone today.” With that, he cocked his rifle and motioned for her to follow him. "Angela requested I bring you along; something about data you need.”

A hand to her chest, lips parted in outrage and shock as she gasped, a touch too theatrical perhaps, but clearly it would get the point across.

“Moi? Motive? I am innocent, I have no motive. Simply surprised to see you here…even after all you have gone through.”

Truth be told, she was far from innocent, but for once the cold blooded assassin had no ill intent towards the man. Gabriel would kill her in her sleep if she did. That was worth keeping in the back of her head.

“Innocent?” A small chuckle escaped from behind the mask as he kept his position, a close eye on the sniper. “Not exactly the word I would use to describe you.”

Why hadn’t she made a move? Was it because of Gabriel? Nevertheless, Jack kept still and didn’t do anything to aggravate the widow. “After everything I’ve been through...I’m sure Gabriel has shared the story then.”
