He Will Kill You

“This nonsense again?” Mrs Lovett shook her head. “No one killed Pirelli, he just left you here, lad. And good he did too, the way he treated you. You’re much better off here, with  your aunt Nellie.”

Breathing a sigh and thinking he would get nowhere with his assumption, Tobias fell silent and nodded his head. He ran over to hug Mrs. Lovett.

“I’m sorry, Mum,” he whispered, snuggling his head on her chest.

“That’s quite all right, love,” Mrs. Lovett smiled, wrapping an arm around the boy. Honestly, she was terrified that he’d discover the truth one day and she’d have to do something about it, but for now she could fob off the Italian’s disappearance on him simply abandoning the boy, and that was good enough for her.

On the inside, Tobias was scared. He was frightened of what might happen to him if he told either Mrs. Lovett or Mr. Todd of his accusation of the barber killing Pirelli…. He already knew he would be killed. He loved Mrs. Lovett, he really did, but, there was hint of suspicion lurking in his mind.

“If you don’t mind, Mum, I’m going to go to sleep.”

“That’s fine, love,” she said, smiling at the child. “I’ll finish up in the shop tonight.” She waved her hand, shooing the boy away, relieved that the subject was dropped.

Mrs. Lovett chuckled. Despite the grim subject matter, it was a cheerful sound.  

“Oh, I’m sure not, Mr. T,” she responded, still grinning.  “After all, that chair drop usually does ‘em in just fine.” She nodded toward the trapdoor hidden behind the barber’s chair. “Just the one who was clinging on, the bugger. Must’ve had something worth living for, I suppose.” 

She looked pensive for a moment, considering what a young man with no family to miss him (for Mr. Todd was careful to only send her meat that would not be missed), had to live for, then shrugged. 

“Ah well, he was all the rage in the shop today, whatever he had going for him before.”

Somehow he doubted it would have been a great comfort to the deceased to know he had been particularly appealing as a menu item, but he appreciated the baker’s optimism. He dusted his chair absently – a habit of sorts, one that he resorted to fairly often, no matter how bare the chair was – and thought back to the shop boy. He had stopped at Lovett’s during the course of his errands this morning; it was one of the few ( if not the only ) luxury Todd allowed the boy.

“Must have been the freshness of the meat,” he guessed conversationally. In truth, he knew little enough about the quality of meat, only that he could keep the baker stocked with a very unique variety, and it seemed to sell quite well. It was mutually beneficial; they both enabled the other to profit from doing what they enjoyed.

“Oh, the fresshness indeed,” Nellie responded int he same conversational tone. She marveled inwardly at the conversation, relizing that a year ago she’d never have dreamed of such horrors, let alone commited them. Still, time changes all, and desprate times call for desperate measures.

“Got any appointments lined up for this afternoon, love?” she asked, keeping the tone casual. She had no particular need for more meat at the moment, though it’s always nice to have some to spare. No, she was just making casual conversation with a man who just so happened to be a murderer.
