Summary: While things have been better since Gothel's defeat, Hugo is still a bit of a grump. Penelope just wants her father to smile...and Rapunzel is more than happy to help her cheer the old dragon up.
Penelope sighed, watching as her father stared at the fire with a sour look on his face. While he had been happier since being liberated from Gothel's control, he was still quite a grump. He rarely smiled and stifled his laughter, on the rare occasion when he did in fact laugh. The most she could get out of him was a small chuckle and smile now and then. The small dragoness slunk out of the room, moving down the corridors of the castle. Rapunzel was smart; perhaps she could think of a way to make her father happy. Penelope moved throughout the castle, poking her head into every room until she finally found her friend.
Rapunzel was sat at her easel, working on one of her paintings. She had been gifted a large painting studio as a wedding gift from Stefan; her own special room in the castle. She would spend hours in there, creating painting after painting. Sometimes Stefan would sit with her, watching his wife with adoration and awe. This time, however, Stefan was away on a hunting trip. Good. Penelope liked Stefan well enough but...she wasn't quite comfortable with going to him for help yet. "Hey, Rapunzel?" Penelope said meekly. The woman looked up, cheeks streaked with paint and a smile on her face. "Oh, hello Penelope!" She greeted.
The purple dragon looked down shyly. "Can I ask you something?" Rapunzel tilted her head, smile dropping slightly. "Of course. Is something wrong?" She asked. Penelope shuffled her feet, rubbing the back of her neck. "It's just...my father doesn't seem happy. He doesn't seem miserable either but..." Rapunzel nodded with understanding. "He's still putting on that tough guy act, huh?" The dragoness gives a small nod in response. "I just want him to smile, you know? To relax a bit. Even though he's not following Gothel's orders anymore, he's still got that wall up. He can't let his guard down; not completely. I don't know what to do."
Rapunzel hummed thoughtfully. "Have you tried telling him a joke? Making his favorite food? Singing him a song?" Penelope nodded with an exasperated huff. "I've tried all of that! The most I've managed to get is a reserved chuckle or five second smirk." Rapunzel rubbed her chin. "He is a tough nut to crack." The purple dragon snorted, rolling her eyes. "You're telling me." She replied. Rapunzel scoured her thoughts; what made her happy? Perhaps something similar would work for Hugo. A freshly baked goody? No, Penelope already said food didn't work. A gift? Hugo didn't seem particularly materialistic.
Suddenly, she had an idea! One that might just work. "Hey Penelope, remember what we used to do when we were little?" Penelope looked to the princess with confusion. "Throw berries at each other? I don't think father liked that very much." Rapunzel laughed, shaking her head. "I was talking about our method of cheering each other up!" It took a minute for Penelope to catch on, eyes widening slightly. "Are you crazy? He'd eat both of us before we could even try!" The woman rolls her eyes. "Oh, you're exaggerating! It'll be fine." She stood up, moving towards the door with the dragoness trailing behind. "Are you sure about this, Rapunzel? What if it doesn't work?" She asked. "It's worth a shot, isn't it? What have we got to lose?" Rapunzel replied.
The two made their down the hall, stopping just outside of view from the doorway. They peaked their heads around, spotting the dragon in the same spot he'd been in before. He didn't seem to notice their presence, continuing to gaze into the fireplace. "Are we really going to do this?" Penelope whispered, earning a nod from her friend. "On the count of three. One, two...three!" Hugo barely had time to turn his head before the two were upon him, latching into his latch torso. "What the devil are you doing?!" He grunted, rolling onto his side in an attempt to get a better look at his attackers. "We're here to cheer you up! Isn't that right, Penelope?" The purple dragoness gave a nervous grin in response. "I don't need cheering up. Get off of me this-"
The dragon's order was cut off as the two girls dug into his torso. Rapunzel and Penelope had very different styles of attack. The human used very gentle, spider-like touches while her companion took advantage of her clawed fingers to dig into the rough scaled skin. Hugo knew one thing for sure though; they both tickled horrifically! The dragon had no hope of keeping his reactions inside, the surprise attack preventing him from steeling himself. He burst into loud guffaws, wings flapping about uselessly. "Gihihihihihihirls!" He chortled, feeling his scales heat with embarrassment. "Oh hush, you needed this. You haven't smiled in ages." Rapunzel retorted with a giggle, delicate fingers scratching under his chin, earning more snickers from poor Hugo. "She's right, father. You really should smile more." Penelope added.
As much as he hated to admit it, they were right. The dragon did need this. That's precisely why he allowed them to continue the attack until they'd had their fill of his deep, rumbling laughter...
Oh, does that tickle? I had no idea. After all, a few little fingers can’t tickle that badly, can they? They can? Well, thank you for informing me. Now I know that I’m doing a good job.
