Progress Blog #10: Conclusion

I found that literacy is in fact a big part of the Twilight community. In order for these accounts to be considered valid, they must accurately state what they are talking about. If they do not do this, they would not have the follow count that they do. They are intelligent people who truly care about what their followers are reading. The passion that they show through their post is motivating for me to do better on my personal accounts. When asked if they thought literacy was important one participant stated that “it is one of the most important aspects of my posts. I triple check everything before I post because I want people to view what I am saying and take it seriously. Nothing is worse than when a person has a typo in their blog.” After I graduate from Texas A&M University- Commerce, I will go on to law school and continue my research abilities. I plan on using the skills I’ve learned over the course of this semester to further my work in school and in life. Research is something that everyone can work on and grow more.  I am happy that I am not the part of my generation that doesn’t know how to do reliable research on a topic anymore.

Progress Blog #9: Family

One thing that makes Twilight the great book that it is, is that the Cullens are extremely warming to Bella and are a perfect family, besides the vampire aspect. The Twilight Fandom comments on this a lot. Bella comes from a split home where her parents live in different states so she is torn between her parents. The Cullen clan has a more complex family dynamic. The Cullens are bound together by their "diet" – none of them prey on humans – and the fact that Carlisle adopted each family member. Though none of them are blood-related, the Cullens understand each other like no humans can, and have genuine affection for each other. Interestingly, the human family (Bella's family) that we see has divorced parents, whereas the vampire family includes several committed, happy marriages.

Progress Blog #8: Food for Thought

Have you ever had a dream so intense that you wrote an entire series about it? Because that's exactly what Stephane Meyer did. One night she dreamed twilight and she got to typing. The fact that she could write an entire series on this is above me. I am impressed because I can't remember my dreams when I wake up. Much less write it down to make a decent story that makes sense. That one night of sleep made her millions of dollars. It's hard to believe that the entire series came from hitting her head in that pillow and snoozing. But who am I to argue? I didn't dream that and am not making the money she's making.

Progress Blog #7: Impact

I want to learn what others view impactful to expand my opinion of the series and knowledge because it has been years since I’ve read the novels. I have always liked fan pages so getting to read these for a project is great for me. The depth of emotion poured out onto the fans feed shows how much they truly care about Twilight. I am intrigued by the amount of passion that I am witnessing. Twilight is a powerful book itself that is full of love and good and heroism. It in itself is a series that cannot be compared to most novels. The literature that Stephine Meyer shows is impeccable even if it is modern romance. Modern romance might not be my favorite kind of literature but it is still a valid genre that is often taken for granted.​ Modern literature is a completely different thing compared to the complexity of the early literature. It is easier to understand and does not require as much thought to read. This helps to explain why so many youth and adolescents care for this book. Because they're actually reading it instead of letting it sit on a bookshelf.

Progress Blog #6: My Predictions

I am in Week 8 of my Fandom research. In anticipation of this research, I thought that I would find many users using slang diction and no punctuation. I personally did not use proper writing in my social media for a long time, and even now I don’t particularly stress on how great my literacy is. Studying people’s personal accounts gives me an inside look on how they speak everyday. Even though these are accounts that thousands of people look at, it is still not considered a professional account. My expectations were set low coming into the experiment because I figured that not a lot of adolescents and young adults truly cared about if they were views “illiterate” or not. I am slowly learning that this is not the case and the users that I am studying now are not illiterate. In fact they provide great feedback to the society that we live in. It is important for me to keep an open mind through this entire experiment so that my results will not be invalid.

Kristen Stewart in The Twilight Saga

Alice. You’ve disappeared. Like everything else. Now who else can I talk to? I’m lost. When you left, and he left, you took everything with you. But the absence of him is everywhere I look. It’s like a huge hole has been punched through my chest. But In a way, I’m glad. The pain is the only reminder that he was real. That you all were.

Bella is torn because she lost the Cullens, they have disappeared. She is lost without them and wants them to come back so she can understand and be happy again.

This can go with my 5th Progress Blog. Fear is something that Bella struggles with the entire series. A lot of post about her on fan pages are about how scared she looks all the time. This is one example of her fear in life. She is scared her because the Cullens have disappeared and left her in the dust. She doesn’t not know where they are and feels unprotected now. They were her protectors and now they are gone. This is a perfect collection to depict how she feels during this time.

The fandom likes to take note of how easy it is for the Cullens to be around human blood. This separates the family from the normal Vampire clans because they are able to function like normal people in society. This is especially important because the story would not be the same as it is if they could not do this. Mr. Cullen is in fact a doctor so Meyers tried to make the Cullen family as normal as possible. The smell of human blood should result in that person dying but miraculously that’s not the case.

Progress Blog #5: Fear

Fear is something that everyone struggles with. The fandom takes fear very seriously. It is something that everyone in the series struggles with. It is also something that makes the story line of the series even more complex. The majority of these characters make actions on what they are fearful about. Edward is fearful of Bella’s life and leaves quite a few times over the course of the books to “save her life” but always has to come back to save her life. The main reason that Bella doesn’t do a lot is because she isn’t confident in her ability to do anything right. This being said, Bella should fear Edward and Jacob but that girl inside her has a strong attraction to both (both of whom could easily end her life). The strong characters of the book still struggle like we all do. In literature it is important to be able to relate to the fictional characters. Even if they are blood-thirsty vampires or any sort of mythical creature. The fandom likes to point out times that characters are consumed with fear because this means that they are “flawed”. But in reality Stephine Meyer might have done this to make them more relatable.

Progress Bog #4: Evil vs. Good

One aspect I find of the series intriguing is the theme of Good vs. Evil. The Cullens are Vampires therefore they live off blood. Unlike most, they do not survive off of human blood. Most vampires scavenge for human blood but they insist on eating animals instead. They are indeed “evil” creatures but they strive not to do evil things (such as kill people). I think the fandom finds this interesting as well. Everyone says that Bella shouldn’t have chosen Edward because he’s an evil, vampire who will eventually eat Bella and her family. But what they don’t understand is that Jacob is equally as evil. In the beginning of time werewolves were a horror story parents would tell their kids about to scare them. They are vicious and will tear up anything in their paths. Edward fans would argue the same as Jacob fans would, he is indeed an evil creature. Though, both can be known throughout history to be creatures of monstrosity, this is not the case for either of the main werewolves and vampires. They fight with who they are in order to keep the ones they love safe. And is only one part of what makes this series such a great read.

Progress Blog 3: Team Jacob?

If you’re not Team Edward, you’re Team Jacob. There are many perks to being a Jacob fan, I’ve learned Jacob is masculine and he goes to great heights to save Bella. Jacob would do anything to keep Bella out of harm's way. This is every woman’s dream. To have a man take care of her and to rescue her at every cost possible. It helps that Jacob Black is incredible hot and muscular. The flaw in this relationship is that when he gets angry and loses his temper, he turns into a bloodthirsty werewolf. Besides the obvious, it felt as though Jacob was always a little over obsessive about Bella and VERY overbearingly protective. It;s kind of creepy how good Jacob is at saving her. How fast he is to catch her when she falls. It’s like a double-edged sword if you think about it. People are very protective over these relationships and are die hard fans of whatever they believe in. The wedge of Team Jacob and Team Edward create two separate groups of people. Because the reality of it is, whether you want to or not you have an opinion of who Bella should really be with.

Progress Blog 2: Team Edward?

Edward loves obsess over the fact that Edward and Bella should be together forever. “Edward and Bella Forever”! People believe that even though Edward left Bella for an entire year in the second novel, and numerously left Bella for “good reasons”. Edward lovers will go on and on about how Jacob is not good enough for Bella. That he’s nothing but a mutt. They will do anything to make fun of Jacob. They will obsess over the beauty of Edward and how he sparkles in the spotlight. Edward is the picture of perfection and most women’s dreams. He is invincible and irresistible. Through reading this relationship, women can feel revived and vicariously live through the book. It gives them a thrill to be able to picture this in their life. The flaw with Team Edward is that they do not take the time to see the flaws in the relationship. The many times that Bella was rescued by Jacob or was in danger because of Edward being MIA (again) shows a red flag for Team Jacob. The fact that Edward could leave Bella knowing good and well that she could be in danger is not a good thing for their relationship. Edwards love should’ve been big enough to never want to let her go for fear of her getting hurt. This is one reason why some people are Team Jacob.

Progress Blog 1:The Start of It All

After the release of the first Twilight, teenagers and adults went crazy for vampires. In order to understand why these people went crazy for Twilight, we must first understand what it is and how Stephenie Meyer came up with it. Stephenie Meyer woke one morning from a strange dream. A dream that would soon make her millions of dollars. After thinking for a few days about the dream, she decided to write it down and document it as she continued to dream about it. The first book was full of a rollercoaster of emotions. After the book took off, directors jumped on the opportunity to make it into a movie. Like they always do. The low budget movie was considered a failure but it didn’t stop people from obsessing over the topic. The book/movie combo created an obsession over vampires, werewolves, and teenage love. Over the years when more books and movies were released people fell head-over-heels for Bella, Edward, and Jacob. These relationships also created a wedge in between people. “Team Edward or Team Jacob?” was the question that everyone was asking each other. This series affected an infinite amount of people all over the world and we will never be able to forget it.
