A kdrama not resorting to the noble idiocy trope?? Colour me surprised!
Happy birthday Tiphie!
I know the pandemic and Sungjin's recent enlistment has been hard on you. That's why you are going to get your dream getaway soon. @mydaystan
Dami Dark Enchantress AU
You knew hiking was a bad idea.
Especially when the forest was too large and dark for your liking.
But the idea of spending time with your friends after all the social distancing and isolation was very tempting.
However all the temptations that lured you into hiking faded in the background as you found yourself stranded.
As you kept running into the same tree again and again, trying to find your way back to the entrance, you found something strange.
A fresh yellow rose with a black stem that shone within the dark setting.
It seemed trampled on though.
You put the rose in your bag and set out again.
You were almost about to quit in despair when you heard a voice.
A bold, assertive voice that was giving you directions?
You did not understand and found yourself going paranoid. But the voice strangely seemed comforting.
Till date, you can't tell whether it was comforting or hypnotizing ( you hope the former ) , but you ran like your life depended on it.
Till you bumped into your worry struck friends.
You called off on the rest of the trip and withdrew to your room.
You took out the rose and rubbed its stem. You then placed it in a jar of water, hoping for it to stay fresh for longer. A chill passed you all of the sudden.
Not thinking much of it, you cranked up the heater and got back to the rose, straightening it's petals.
𝒲𝒾𝓁𝓁 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝓈𝓉𝑜𝓅 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓉. 𝐼𝓉 𝓉𝒾𝒸𝓀𝓁𝑒𝓈!
Where did that voice come from? You turned around frantically.
When you glanced down you spotted a lady in black, leaning back on your recliner.
A gorgeous lady in black.
𝒴𝑜𝓊'𝓇𝑒 𝓃𝑒𝓌 𝒽𝑒𝓇𝑒, 𝒶𝓇𝑒𝓃'𝓉 𝓎𝑜𝓊?
Excuse me?
𝐼 𝓉𝒽𝑜𝓊𝑔𝒽𝓉 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓁𝑒𝑔𝑒𝓃𝒹 𝓂𝒶𝒹𝑒 𝒾𝓉 𝒸𝓁𝑒𝒶𝓇 𝑒𝓃𝑜𝓊𝑔𝒽. 𝒯𝒽𝑜𝓈𝑒 𝓌𝑜𝑜𝒹𝓈 𝓌𝑒𝓇𝑒 𝑜𝓊𝓉 𝑜𝒻 𝒷𝑜𝓊𝓃𝒹𝓈.
Now that you think of it, there were some stories your friends tried telling you but you plugged your ears, not wanting to hear nightmare fuel
𝒢𝑒𝓃𝑒𝓇𝒶𝓁𝓁𝓎 𝓈𝓅𝑒𝒶𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔, 𝐼 𝒽𝒶𝓉𝑒 𝑜𝓊𝓉𝓈𝒾𝒹𝑒𝓇𝓈. 𝐸𝓈𝓅𝑒𝒸𝒾𝒶𝓁𝓁𝓎 𝓌𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓎 𝒿𝓊𝓈𝓉 𝓈𝓉𝓇𝓊𝓉 𝒾𝓃𝓉𝑜 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓌𝑜𝑜𝒹𝓈 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝓀𝓃𝑜𝓌𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒹𝒶𝓃𝑔𝑒𝓇𝓈 𝒾𝓉 𝒽𝑜𝓁𝒹𝓈. 𝐵𝓊𝓉 𝓎𝑜𝓊?
She stood up and cornered you to the wall. Tilting up your face to meet her piercing eyes.
𝒴𝑜𝓊 𝒾𝓃𝓃𝑜𝒸𝑒𝓃𝓉 𝓁𝒾𝓉𝓉𝓁𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔? 𝒴𝑜𝓊'𝓇𝑒 𝓉𝑜𝓉𝒶𝓁𝓁𝓎 𝓂𝓎 𝓉𝓎𝓅𝑒.
She was so close you could feel her breathe down your shoulder.

For the people who are out there “fighting the good fight” and “trying to make fandom a better place,” I have two important questions for you:
1. Is the author dead? x
2. Is your baby in the bathwater? x
What do I mean by those things? Let’s start with #1. The Death of the Author is a type of literary criticism, the extreme cliff notes version of which is that art exists outside of the creator’s life, personal background, and even intentions. I’m using it slightly differently than Barthes intended, but that’s okay, because the author is dead and I’m interpreting his work through my own lens.
In fandom, the author is dead. In fact, the author was never alive in the first place, not really. The author has only ever been the idea of a person, because unlike published fiction, the only thing we know about a fanfic author is that which they choose to tell us about themselves.
Why is that important?
Because it might not be true. Hell, that happens in real life with published authors, who have SSN’s on file with their publishers, who pay taxes on the works they create and have researchable pasts. If the author of A Million Little Pieces could fake everything, why can’t I? Why can’t you? Why can’t the writer of your favorite fic in the whole wide world?
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: “you can only write about [sensitive subject] if [sensitive subject] has happened to you personally, otherwise you’re a disgusting monster that deserves to die!!” Or maybe “you can only write [x racial or ethnic group] characters if you’re [x racial or ethnic group] otherwise you’re racist/fetishizing/colonizing!”
You can play this game with any sensitive subject you can come up with. I’ve seen them all before, on a sliding scale of slightly chastising to literal death threats.
Now, I could tell you that I’m a white-passing Latina whose grandmother was an anchor baby. I could tell you that I speak only English because my family never taught me to speak Spanish, something which I’ve been told is common in the Cuban community, though I only know my own lived experience. I could tell you that I’m mostly neurotypical. I could tell you that I’m covered in surgical scars. I could tell you lots of things.
Are any of these true? Maybe! I could tell you that my brother has severe mental development problems, so uncommon that they’ve never been properly diagnosed, and that he will live the rest of his life in a group home with 24-hour care. Is that true? Am I allowed to write about families struggling with America’s piss-poor services for the handicapped now?
Am I allowed to write about being Cuban? After all, I did just say that I’m Cuban. But is it true? Can I instead write a character that’s Panamanian? Maybe I really am Panamanian, not Cuban. Maybe I’m both. Maybe I’m neither. Maybe I’m really French Canadian. Should we require people to post regular selfies? I can’t count the number of times I’ve had someone come up to me speaking Arabic, and I’ve been told that I look Syrian. What’s stopping me from making a blog that claims that I am Syrian? Can you even really tell someone’s race and ethnicity from a photo?
Am I allowed to write about being a teenager? Am I allowed to write about being a college student? Am I allowed to write about being an “adulty” adult? Can I write a character who’s 40? 50? 60? How old am I?
All of this is to say: you can’t base what someone is or is not “allowed” to write about on a background that may or may not be real. No matter how good your intentions. And I get it - this usually comes from a place of well-meaning. You’re trying to protect marginalized groups by stopping privileged people from trampling all over experiences that they haven’t suffered. I get that. It’s a very noble thought. But you can’t require a background check for every fic that you don’t like.
If you say “you can only write about rape if you’re a rape victim,” then one of three things will happen:
Real survivors will have to supply intimate details of their own violations to prevent harassment
Real survivors will refuse to engage and will then have to deal with death threats and people telling them to kill themselves for daring to write about their own experiences
People who aren’t survivors will say “yeah sure this happened to me” just to get people to shut up
Has that helped anyone? I mean really - anyone??
So now let’s get to point #2: is your baby in the bathwater?
If your intention is to protect marginalized people from being trampled upon, stop and assess if your boot is the one that’s now stamping on their face. Find your baby! Is your baby in the bathwater? Which is to say: find the goal that you’re advocating for. Now assess. Are you making the problem worse for the people you’re trying to protect? Does that rape victim really feel better, now that you’ve harassed and stalked them in the name of making rape victims feel safe?
Let’s say you read a fic that contains explicit sex between a 16 year old and a 17 year old. Is this okay? Would it be okay if the writer was 15? 16? 17? Should teenagers be barred from writing about their own lives, and should teenagers be banned from exploring sexuality in a fictional bubble, instead of hookup culture? Is it okay for a 20 year old to write about their experiences as a teenager? Is it okay for a 20 year old to write about being raped at a party as a teenager? Is it okay for a 30 year old? How about a 40 year old? Is it okay so long as it isn’t titillating? Is it okay if taking control of the narrative allows the writer to re-conceptualize their trauma as something they have control over? Is it okay if their therapist told them that writing is a safe creative outlet?
Is your author dead?
Is your baby in the bathwater?
Now let’s take a hardline approach: no fanfiction with characters who are under 18 years old. None. Is the 16 year old who really loves Harry Potter and wants to read/write about characters their own age better off? Should they be banned from writing? Should they be forced to exclusively read and write (adult) experiences that they haven’t lived? Will they write about teens anyway? Should they have to share it in secret? Should 16 year olds be ashamed of themselves? Should we just throw in with the evangelicals and say that the only answer is abstinence, both real and fictional?
Let’s say that no rape is allowed in fiction, at all. None. What happens to all the hurt/comfort fics where a character is raped and then receives the support and love that they deserve, slowly heal, and by the end have found themselves again? Are you helping rape victims by banning these stories? Are you helping rape victims by stripping their agency away, by telling them that their wants and their consent doesn’t matter?
Is your baby in the bathwater?
Fandom is currently being split in two: on one side, the people who want to make fandom a “safer” place by any means necessary, even if that means throwing out all of the marginalized groups they say they want to protect - and on the other, people who are saying “if you throw out that bathwater, you’re throwing the baby out too.”
The whole point of fandom is to be able to explore all kinds of ideas from the safety and comfort of a computer screen. You can read/write things that fascinate you, disgust you, titillate you, or make your heart feel warm. This is true of all fiction. People who want to read about rape and incest and extreme violence and torture can go pick up a copy of Game of Thrones from the bookstore whenever they want. Sanitizing fandom just means holding a community of people who are primarily not male, not straight, not cis, or some combination of those three, to higher and stricter standards than straight white cis male authors and creators all over the world.
There is nothing you can find on AO3 that you can’t find in a bookstore. Any teenager can go check out Lolita, or ASOIAF, or Flowers in the Attic, or Stephen King’s It, or Speak, or hundreds of other books that have adult themes or gratuitous violence or graphic sex. The difference is that AO3 has warnings and tags and allows people to interact only with the types of work that they want to, and allows people to curate their experiences.
Are these themes eligible to be explored, but only in the setting of something produced/published? Books, movies, television, studio art, music - all of these fields have huge barriers to entry, and they’re largely controlled by wealthy cishet white men. Is it better to say that only those who have the right connections to “make it” in these industries should be allowed to explore violence or sexuality or any other so-called “adult” theme?
Does banning women from writing MLM erotica make fan culture a better place?
Does banning queer people from writing about queer experiences make fan culture a better place?
Is M/M fic okay, but only if the author is male? What if he’s a transman? What if they’re NB? Who should get to draw those lines? Should TERFs get a vote? What if the author is a woman who feels more comfortable writing from a male character’s perspective because she’s grown up with male stories her whole life, or because she identifies more with male characters? What about all the transmen who discovered themselves, in part, by writing fanfiction, and realized that their desires to write male characters stemmed from something they hadn’t yet realized about themselves?
How can we ever be sure that the author is who they say they are?
Who is allowed to write these stories? How do we enforce it?
Is it better for none of these stories to ever exist at all?
Have you killed your author?
Have you thrown out your baby with the bathwater?
this post is AMAZING.
In all my years in fandom no one explained this better. This post is magnificent.
Would also be really annoying if they wore heat resistant gloves to throw back the hot tear gas canisters and if this got shared to all those protesting…
Would be a further shame if people started covering cameras (as seen in Hong Kong, with protestors using poles and rakes to lift cardboard boxes over security cameras), blinding drone optics with laser pointers, and flooding police-run reporting apps with junk data.
It would be a shame if the protesters noted that plainclothes cops can be identified a number of ways, such as wearing steel-toed boots; an armband or wristband of a particular color; driving white, black, or dark blue cars with concealed lights; or having the outline of cuffs visible in the back pocket or the bumps of an armor vest’s shoulder straps under their shirt.
It would be a shame if the protesters began making their signs out of inch-thick plywood to stop rubber bullets, forming a tight shield wall to prevent police from singling out and mobbing individual protesters. It would be a shame if the people behind the shield wall held up umbrellas so that tear gas canisters fired over the heads of the front line will be bounced away. It would be a shame if protesters began constructing improvised armor vests out of duct tape, hardback books, and ceramic tiles.
It would be a shame if protesters started wearing safety glasses, hard hats, respirators, and gardening gloves, all of which can be found at the same hardware stores as the plywood. It would be a shame if they started using traffic cones (the kind without the hole in the top) upside-down buckets, or other improvised lids to contain tear gas by placing them over the canisters.
It would be a shame if protesters learned that police scanners are legal to own in the US, allowing them to learn where police are moving and what routes they intend to take. It would be a shame if they discovered that these scanners can be used to send as well as receive, allowing them to flood the scanner frequencies with noise.
All this would be a terrible, terrible shame.
I've been tagged numerous times to do this, notably by @mydaystan
Both for the last time and now hehe.
I guess my aesthetic is a lil in between these haha
“It is very difficult to uncover Elizabeth’s private feelings towards her father. Certainly, she paraded her filial descent with pride. A decade after Henry’s death, the Venetian ambassador noted that she “prides herself on her father and glories in him”. Later still, during her own coronation procession in January 1559, Elizabeth smiled on hearing one of the spectators refer to King Henry, and she claimed it was because “she rejoysed at his name whom this realme doth hold of so woorthy memorie: so in all her doinges she will resemble the same”. On the strength of such observations, biographers have commented on Elizabeth’s adulation of the king. However, given the allegations that she was not Henry’s daughter, Elizabeth had every motive for flaunting her affection and admiration for her royal father. Moreover, in view of Henry’s treatment of his wives and daughters, she had every reason to fear – rather than to love – the irascible, volatile, and merciless monarch. And, indeed, her calm reaction to the news of his death suggests that she experienced no great grief at his passing. Furthermore, her New Year’s gifts for both him and Queen Katherine in 1544 betray an unsettling ambivalence in her inward feeling towards the king.
On New Year’s Eve 1544, Elizabeth probably gave her father a handwritten French translation of Erasmus’ Dialogus fidei, though we cannot be certain, as the work is no longer extant. A matching gift to her stepmother has survived in the form of a handwritten twenty-seven-page English translation of a volume of meditations that had been composed by Margaret of Navarre, sister of King Francis I of France. Every aspect of this gift to Katherine was carefully thought out and redolent in meaning. Its title, The glasse of the synnefull soule, drew attention to Elizabeth’s royal lineage, as it alluded to her paternal great-grandmother Margaret Beaufort’s volume of translations entitled Miroure of golde for the sinful soul. The pages were bound together within a blue cover on which Elizabeth had embroidered pansies in each corner and knotwork pattern in silver thread surrounding Katherine’s initials in the centre. Pansies both punned with the French word for meditations, pensées, and, in the language of flowers, sent out the message “think of me” to Katherine, from whom she had just parted. The embroidered forget-me-nots on the spine of the book signified the “love” or “affection” she held for her stepmother. This was a gift, then, that not only displayed the young girl’s intellectual precociousness and feminine skills but also drew attention to her royal ancestry and signalled her devotion to the queen-consort and, by extension, the king. It can be read as a bid to retain their affections and receive in return a more permanent place at court.
Possibly too, although this is necessarily more speculative, Elizabeth’s gift reveals a deeper and darker psychological side to her feelings towards her father. Margaret’s original poem was a set of meditations on family relationships through which humans may understand God’s love. In fact, the work touched on adultery, bastardy, and incest, all sensitive subjects for the 11-year-old daughter of Anne Boleyn to handle. What is more, its presentation of God as a great king and judge who is kind to daughters and merciful to adulterous wives might have touched a raw nerve in Elizabeth. For this reason, some scholars have argued that her mistranslations and departures from the original text stem, not from a young girl’s carelessness, but from a deep-rooted, perhaps, subconscious, anxiety and anger about her own father’s lack of mercy towards his adulterous wife.”

hello if u ever wondered which day6 member trait you’d be, here’s ur chance to find out < 3
@day6hasmyass , @the-impossible-bitch, @theravnone, @pinktea99
Y'all need to check out the options in this one ☝
so i just googled the phrase “toeing out of his shoes” to make sure it was an actual thing
and the results were:
it’s all fanfiction
which reminds me that i’ve only ever seen the phrase “carding fingers through his hair” and people describing things like “he’s tall, all lean muscle and long fingers,” like that formula of “they’re ____, all ___ and ____” or whatever in fic
idk i just find it interesting that there are certain phrases that just sort of evolve in fandom and become prevalent in fic bc everyone reads each other’s works and then writes their own and certain phrases stick
i wish i knew more about linguistics so i could actually talk about it in an intelligent manner, but yeah i thought that was kinda cool
Ha! Love it!
One of my fave authors from ages ago used the phrase “a little helplessly” (like “he reached his arms out, a little helplessly”) in EVERY fic she wrote. She never pointed it out—there just came a point where I noticed it like an Easter egg. So I literally *just* wrote it into my in-progress fic this weekend as an homage only I would notice. <3
To me it’s still the quintessential “two dudes doing each other” phrase.
I think different fic communities develop different phrases too! You can (usually) date a mid 00s lj fic (or someone who came of age in that style) by the way questions are posed and answered in the narration, e.g. “And Patrick? Is not okay with this.” and by the way sex scenes are peppered with “and, yeah.” I remember one Frerard fic that did this so much that it became grating, but overall I loved the lj style because it sounded so much like how real people talk. Another classic phrase: wondering how far down the _ goes. I’ve seen it mostly with freckles, but also with scars, tattoos, and on one memorable occasion, body glitter at a club. Often paired with the realization during sexy times that “yeah, the __ went all they way down.” I’ve seen this SO much in fic and never anywhere else
whoa, i remember reading lj fics with all of those phrases! i also remember a similar thing in teen wolf fics in particular - they often say “and derek was covered in dirt, which. fantastic.” like using “which” as a sentence-ender or at least like sprinkling it throughout the story in ways published books just don’t.
LINGUISTICS!!!! COMMUNITIES CREATING PHRASES AND SLANG AND SHAPING LANGUAGE IN NEW WAYS!!!!!!!
I love this. Though I don’t think of myself as fantastic writer, by any means, I know the way I write was shaped more by fanfiction and than actual novels.
I think so much of it has to do with how fanfiction is written in a way that feels real. conversations carry in a way that doesn’t feel forced and is like actual interactions. Thoughts stop in the middle of sentences.
The coherency isn’t lost, it just marries itself to the reader in a different way. A way that shapes that reader/writer and I find that so beautiful.
FASCINATING
and it poses an intellectual question of whether the value we assign to fanfic conversational prose would translate at all to someone who reads predominantly contemporary literature. as writers who grew up on the internet find their way into publishing houses, what does this mean for the future of contemporary literature? how much bleed over will there be?
we’ve already seen this phenomenon begin with hot garbage like 50 shades, and the mainstream public took to its shitty overuse of conversational prose like it was a refreshing drink of water. what will this mean for more wide-reaching fiction?
QUESTIONS!
@wasureneba @allthingslinguistic
I’m sure someone could start researching this even now, with writers like Rainbow Rowell and Naomi Novik who have roots in fandom. (If anyone does this project please tell me!) It would be interesting to compare, say, a corpus of a writer’s fanfic with their published fiction (and maybe with a body of their nonfiction, such as their tweets or emails), using the types of author-identification techniques that were used to determine that J.K. Rowling was Robert Galbraith.
One thing that we do know is that written English has gotten less formal over the past few centuries, and in particular that the word “the” has gotten much less frequent over time.
In an earlier discussion, Is French fanfic more like written or spoken French?, people mentioned that French fanfic is a bit more literary than one might expect (it generally uses the written-only tense called the passé simple, rather than the spoken-only tense called the passé composé). So it’s not clear to what extent the same would hold for English fic as well – is it just a couple phrases, like “toeing out of his shoes”? Are the google results influenced by the fact that most published books aren’t available in full text online? Or is there broader stuff going on? Sounds like a good thesis project for someone!
See also: the gay fanfiction pronoun problem, ship names, and the rest of my fanguistics tag.
I’d like to point out that if you instead search books.google.com for a variety of phrases like “toed out of his shoes”, “toeing out of his shoes”, “toed out of her shoes” etc, you get a total of a couple hundred results - almost all of which are romance novels published in the last decade. Of the fic writers I personally know who have gone on to publish? Pretty much all of them published romance novels, or at least started there.
Obviously, I’m not saying all of these writers wrote fic first, but I bet a lot of them did, or at least read it, and then the language probably spreads to other romance writers. Where will it spread next? :)
But my real question is… how do other writers describe the process of using the toe of one foot to push your shoe off the other foot? I’ve certainly seen “kicked one’s shoes off” but that has a more forceful sort of connotation, obviously.
(Also, let’s all remember that young urban women are historically at the forefront of almost all linguistic trends. The “urban” part might be changing thanks to the internet, but given that most fic is written by younger women, it should be no shock if writing trends start there.)
(Another note: I once searched for “praise kink” because I was like, this is a concept I need language to talk about in real life - and all the hits were fanfic.)

Manager! Dami x Marketing Assistant! You
Dami's a pro and an intimidating one at that
So when you're sent to the marketing dept, you don't think twice but your friends are afraid she'd chew you up
Your only concern however is that you'd get distracted as you find her GORGEOUS
Work goes surprisingly good though
She's an absolute slave driver but she values your opinions which is quite rare
The only actual interactions you have with her are when you get her coffee though
Often times you end up staring at her for longer than acceptable
Once that led to you spilling coffee on your hand and all over her desk
You thought you were done for but she just waved it off
You worked overtime cause you felt guilty
You slept at your desk and woke up to see your hand wrapped in bandages
There was only person who could have done it but it seemed improbable
It definitely deepened your crush though
Your posting at the marketing department comes to an end and you're a lil sad to leave
You meet her at her desk and she extends her hand to meet yours and you automatically freeze
Dami looks into your eyes, that fierce gaze of hers
Dami found you different from the rest
She had also found you adorable, fumbling with your sweater paws
Singing too loudly to Dane Christopher
But she also saw how you worked super hard
And always had fresh ideas
Which were sometimes overlooked
And your entire face would fall
It was then that Dami resolved that she'd never let you get upset under her watch
All she could think of when you got her coffee was if only you would get coffee for two
And the both of you could be next to each other in comfortable silence like you'd always been
She definitely got scared of whether she'd be rejected for the first time
But the fear of never having tried was stronger
Thus she threw in her shot
"So...now that you don't work under me, how about I get you that coffee? I promise I won't spill" Sealing it with a wink
"I don't know... " You started and Dami thought she had finally tasted how rejection feels like
"I don't know about coffee cause you tend to overdose, but we could get something refreshing to drink, and maybe go outside, like on a picnic cause you're cooped inside for too long"
You do not know where the confidence came from but perhaps you too didn't want to miss out on the chance
Dami's grip on your hand loosened and now it was your time to get an anxiety attack
Did you go too far?
She breaks into a smile which makes you relax
She gets up and leans in to whisper
Sure. But promise me coffee in bed sometime soon kay~
Yup, your friends were right. She was indeed a force to be reckoned with.
A force you loved to face 😉
