I had a weird dream last night. I was a pumpkin! And we were dancing a waltz in our yard! It’s really strange. But it was fun.
I hope you are feeling good there. I miss you. Do you remember our days? It was a great time. We walked everyday and ate apples with caramel. And we drank coffee from a little cafe.
I am living in the house that we bought last autumn. Not cozy without you. Now my older sister Maria is visiting me. We are playing chess and listening to music on the gramophone. And my old cat Jackie is here. But not you. Hope you are waiting for me.

I smoothed the sheet, got up from the bench, and walked over to the grave. Ivar's name was written on it. I straightened the already withering flowers, put a small pumpkin and the letter at the foot of the monument. Turned around and walked away.

Kate took a breath and knocked on his door. She knew she was making a mistake, but she didn't care. Outworld was terrifying, and she hated it. She missed home. She missed the familiarity of her surroundings. She missed knowing what she was doing. There was none of that in Outworld. Was it so wrong that she wanted something that made her feel safe?
Kabal opened the door a few seconds later. His breath hitched in his throat. He clearly wasn't expecting her. "Kate. Everything good? It's late."
"Sorry, I just - I wanted to talk, and you're the only person I can talk to. Can I come in?" Kate stepped closer.
"Okay," Kabal said, though he sounded uncertain. He had his mask on, which made it impossible for her to decipher his thoughts. If she only knew how bad she made him ache for her... She walked in, and he shut the door. "What's on your mind?"
"I can't do this." She sat on his bed and put her head in her hands. "I just want to go home. Nothing here makes sense, and I'm..."
"Scared?" Kabal sat next to her. He had gone through the same turmoil the first time Kano dragged him to Outworld. Kate bit her lip. "I get it. We're not on Earth - let alone in a plane where Earth exists. It's a mindfuck."
"How do you deal with it?"
Kabal shrugged. "I just do."
"Oh," Kate said. Tears were welling up in her eyes. Baraka had been so close to tearing her throat out. She could still feel the scrape of his teeth on her neck. She could still hear her scream echoing off the walls. If Kabal hadn't stepped in, she'd be dead. And Kano - how could he just sit there and watch it happen?
"Hey, what's this?" He asked, using his thumb to wipe a tear away from her cheek.
Kate closed her eyes. She couldn't look at him like this. It was pathetic, but the paranoia outweighed her pride. "Can I stay with you tonight, please?"
"Uh..."
"Please? I can't sleep alone. Not here."
"Sure, I guess I can sleep on the floor or whatever."
"Thank you." Kate threw her arms around his waist and held him tight.
"Just don't tell Erron or Kano, okay?"
"Yeah, sure."
When it was apparent Kate wasn't going to let him go, he laid back on the bed. Touching another person without intending to kill them had become a foreign concept since he was burned. His heart raced in his chest, and he prayed she couldn't hear it. It had been so long since he had been held like this. It was nice.
Kate curled into his side and rested her head on his shoulder. Closing her eyes, she listened to the raspy sounds of his breath. With his strong arms wrapped around her, she felt safe. Kabal was fast enough that he could protect her from anyone before they had the chance to threaten her. It made her stomach fill with butterflies when she felt him rest his chin on her head.
She wasn't blind. Of course, she saw his scars. But through the course of getting to know him, they didn't matter. He was intelligent and funny. That's what made her fall for him. And his voice...it was like music to her ears. She wished he would see himself the way she saw him. This tension that had been building between them would have been resolved if he only knew.
Kabal stroked her hair and tucked it behind her ear. It was instinctual like it was what he was supposed to do. And he kept it up until her breathing slowed and she went limp against him. Carefully, he shifted out from under her, but she squeezed him tighter. It made him smile behind his mask.
"Don't leave me." She whispered.
"Jeeze, relax. I'm getting the blanket. I'm freezing my balls off."
"Want me to warm them up?" Kate smirked and started drifting her hand down his scarred abs.
"Easy, kitten. You're on thin ice." He pulled her hand back up to his chest.
"You're no fun."
"Keep it up, and you can sleep with Kano."
"Oh God, please no."
"Then behave yourself." Kabal pulled the blanket up to her chin.
"I hate how effective Kano is as a threat for punishment."
"I don't." Kabal quipped and yawned. "Go to sleep so I can sleep."
"Promise you won't leave me." Kate held her pinky finger out.
Kabal hooked his little finger with hers. "I promise."
From the half-open door came music playing on a gramophone. I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling. Shadows played on it, small and large. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep. But then strange sounds were heard outside the window.
" One, two, one, two." A thin voice squeaked.
I looked frightened towards the window. Plucking up the courage, I approached him. And an unusual picture opened up to my eyes. The pumpkins, which usually lay in a heap by the barn door, were now paired around the yard. And they were moving!
I rubbed my eyes and looked around in surprise. With the help of some kind of magic I was transported to the street. I swore, took a step towards the house and realized that I had no legs! And instead of them my body is a pumpkin! I wanted to cry, but I realized that I could not.
"Hey!" There was a displeased cry. "Why are you lagging behind? One, two!"
An unknown force swirled me in a strange waltz, a pumpkin waltz. It was very creepy, but then it became fun. I burst out laughing how a revived pumpkin could do it and spun. The music became stronger and more energetic ...
I sat down abruptly on the bed. The sun was shining through the glass, my cat Jackie and a small pumpkin lay on the windowsill. I jumped up and ran to the mirror. I had an ordinary human body. I pinched my thigh and winced. Lost in thought I sat down on a chair by the closet. What happened then at night? Dream?
