once upon a time in a land far far away there was a baby princess who lived in a shining castle. her parents were so grateful that she was born that they invited the entire kingdom to come and see her. people came from all over the land, whether they be rich or poor, witch, fairy or forest folk. and they all brought gifts. all rejoicing that the kingdom would have a ruler, well all except one. the kings brother was bitterly angry that he was being supplanted as the heir to the throne and thus instead of a gift, he brought with him a curse. a curse different than any the kingdom had ever seen, a curse that declared there would be. no more happily ever afters. no sooner had he uttered those words than the kingdom began to transform, and the residents were no longer their storybook selves but instead had become something very different.
the town called faraway appears as a quaint little village with thatched rooves and neatly trimmed bushes yet underneath it hides something much darker. in this new world, the king’s brother was mayor and instead of noble lords and ladies and subjects. there are masters and toys. hero or villain status no longer matters, and you obey the laws or face punishment.
