The moon tonight kind of makes me get why night hunting is/was legal in Germany. Phone pic does it nowhere near justice but I can see a silhouette 200m away. I found an old box of Cuban cigars at the bottom of the humidor, a gift from a friend who I’ve grown distant with. A half decade is forever and the blink of an eye. I hear coyotes, dogs (some mine - weirded out by me smoking a cigar late at night), crickets and a distant party. When the party people howl the coyotes join in, and then the dogs. This is the injured baby rooster I watched Heat with tonight. He had a compound fracture of the leg last week (which my daughter and I set and splinted) but was not eating or drinking well. His wound was healing slowly. During the movie he ate and drank like a champ. And shit on me four times. He’s doing so much better after a few hours of cuddling and TV watching. Coyotes upped their lamb snacking dramatically in July. And all my coyote rifles have been recently banned. Up until July they’d been feasting on the bountiful COVID boosted rabbit population, but I guess we’ve run out of rabbits. The dogs had a tussle with them and Goose’s ear was wounded. I needed a rifle quick, and on a budget. Build started with a @remingtonarmscompany 783 heavy barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor. Dropped it in an @mdttac21 LSS GEN2 chassis with an SCS stock. Topped with a @nikoncanada Monarch 3, 4-16x. Threw on some Magpul and @surefire_llc stuff for good measure. At ~2660 FPS out of the 16.5” barrel it’ll do for my max distance of 400m. Zeroed it at the back of the farm and my first group at 100m was 2.7cm. Good enough! MDT accidentally shipped me an LSS in black instead of FDE, and they were nice enough to let me use that one while waiting for the FDE one to arrive. So naturally instead of RMA’ing it I bought it too and built another rifle in 308. So far I am loving the 6.5, coyotes not so much. Out plinking on a beautiful day with the kids.
