Drifting Heavy Weather Clouds by Emily Nolde, 1928
I hate when people shit on Antoni and Karamo.
Like, âOh big whoop, he taught a guy how to mash up an avocado and add lime juice. And he talks to dudes while driving them places. Neither of them actually do anything.â
Dude, this is a depressed guy who has no motivation to break out of the rut heâs in. All 5 of them work together to help the guy break out, but itâs going to be all on him to keep it up when they leave.
So Antoni sticks with simple things that are easy to make and easy to do, but still feel fancy and special. Itâs his way of providing the guy the tools he needs to keep that positive momentum going after they all leave.
A guy struggling with depression isnât going to make some fancy risotto on a regular basis. But homemade guacamole from scratch? Thatâs doable. And itâs still special.
Karamo helps them acknowledge and accept their baggage in a way that motivates them. He often does this while driving, because straight men tend to be more comfortable with deep conversations happening side by side, instead of face to face.
He has the incredible ability to look at someone and go, âThis is whatâs wrong in your life right nowâ in a way that makes the guy feel empowered, instead of dragging him down.
Like, people talk with him and walk away thinking, âOh wow, this is something about myself I can really fix.â
Karamo legitimately helps people see themselves, both more honestly and more positively. He can reach across ethnic, religious, cultural, and political divides and connect with someone in such a positive, powerful way.
Do you have any idea how crazy of a skill that is? Can you do that, on command, in front of a camera, with people youâve known for 2 days?
This glorious bastard can.
Heâs a fucking superhero. But instead of a cape, he wears a bomber jacket (and now you wonât be able to unsee that. But itâs okay, capes are outdated and all superheros need *something*)
All 5 of them contribute a wholefuckinglot, not just to the guyâs (or womanâs) mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing, but to their ability to keep the progress going after the film crews leave.
