3 types of self soothing thoughts
Validation: it’s ok that I hurt and want to feel better
Reassurance: I can handle this pain even though it hurts
Perspective taking: I’ve had bad days like this before and I’ve made it through them. I can remember my better days and know I’m not always hurting this much
I just heard this woman say “you procrastinate because you are afraid of rejection. It’s a defense mechanism, you are trying to protect yourself without even trying.” and I think I just realized what was wrong with me.
Yep, this is a very, very common reason for procrastinating. It’s also why procrastination, even though it’s often associated with laziness, is a fairly common trait in a lot of people with anxiety and perfectionism issues.
“Because I like your voice. There are voices that leave me literally tired. You have a most pleasant voice.”
— Virginia Woolf, from a letter to Vita Sackville-West c. November I928
You are in control of your attitude. Even on your worst day, you can treat people with kindness and respect. Going through a tough season is not an excuse to take that out on the people around you. Hold yourself accountable for your emotions and responses. And if you find yourself reacting negatively, be quick to apologize. Do not buckle down and let pride convince you you have a right to be a jerk. Own up to your bad attitude and apologize for projecting that on someone else’s peace.
“One day—preferably when we’re both blind drunk—we can talk about it.”
— J.D. Salinger
better to lose people not meant for you than to exhaust yourself trying to impress, love, help, and grow with people who never will be
