Smothering a yawn against the palm of his hand, Diarmuid stared tiredly at the accumulation of assignments in a folder on his desktop screen – essays on the structure of their society, notes on the application of the Sibyl system, constructive commentaries on the location of economic enterprises within the city – and suppressed the urge to slump that much farther into his chair. Years ago, when he first chose to become a teacher, he couldn’t have possibly predicted how wearisome it’d be, how many assignments there’d be, how such a broad spectrum of quality and quantity could exist among a student body that’d once seemed so intimate and enclosed. He had confirmed: the number of students attending the Academy had not increased significantly, not since his attendance, yet the sheer magnitude of same-named documents made it appear otherwise. He now empathized with the teachers’ complaints, shiftlessly guiding his mouse to the first of the multifarious essays and intending to start grading, albeit with half the usual enthusiasm he usually had.

Mouse left lingering on the title, Diarmuid squinted at the name of the student whose assignment this was, trying (and failing) to recall the usual quality of their work and whether or not it was worth deciphering nonsense written at absurd hours of the morning. He had just about successfully recalled their name – either they were a male student whose antics were far more trouble than they seemed successful, or a female student who was the quintessence of timidity – and resigned himself to not bothering regardless when the sound of the door opening startled him into action. Hurriedly clicking on the essay and skimming the first lines (his suspicions were confirmed, he shouldn’t have bothered), Diarmuid cleared his throat and composed himself. It was his classroom and his responsibility to attend to the concerns of his visitor.

“May I help you?” He raised his eyes from his desktop screen and responded to any potential inquiry with a cordial smile. He had prepared himself for all manners of criticism and uncomfortable compliments, used to such circumstances, as he held the gaze of the figure standing just inside the threshold. “Please, take a seat.”

“Ah, morals.” Laughing, he speaks with a tender smile, as if morality is a subject he enjoys talking about. “I suppose I have quite a few, most of which could be considered standard of human behavior, but the foremost of those is honesty and honor. One must be honest not just to others and one’s superiors, but also to oneself. You can only attain true happiness if you realize what exactly it is you desire in life and you discover that through truthfulness. And honor… honor is simply what you earn through such honesty. To lose honor is to lose the respect of other’s and oneself; and dishonesty is a certain way to lose it.”

“A somewhat converse of my previous answer. I despite nothing more than betrayal. It is to take advantage of someone’s generosity and sympathy, to manipulate them into a false sense of security only to deprive them of reality.”

I believe… that no human being is beyond redemption, that we are inherently good and retain virtue, regardless of the mistakes we make or difficulties we face. People should not be recklessly accused or abandoned because of one foul action, or even the potential within them to do wrong.” He sighs, resigning himself to suppressing further discussion of his opinion.

“But I suppose it’s not my right to judge.”

“Ignorance and the insistence upon maintaining that ignorance. I’ve met plenty an unpleasant student in my day but nothing irks me more than one who refuses to learn. It tries my patience and even that has a limit.”

“Oh. Uh, I –” Flustered at such a question, his face flushes at such a question, fingers instinctually raising to pinch the bridge of his nose. He closes his eyes, clearly struggling to produce an answer. “… I’ve thought on more than one occasion of using feminine hair products on my hair. I’ve gotten quite a few recommendations from my female students. They said it’d make it ‘soft’ and ‘silky smooth,’ which I suppose is a fair enough trade for smelling like Japanese cherry blossoms.”

✦ fatal flaw:

“I wouldn’t say there’s any particular aspect of myself that’s… ‘fatal?’ If you could be so considerate as to define the term more specifically? But if you mean ‘fatal’ in terms of inducing death or danger upon myself, then I suppose my sympathy would be the most ‘fatal.’ Otherwise… I’m not quite certain.” He laughs, awkwardly, inclining his head in slight apology. “Hopefully this wasn’t too horrid an answer? My sense of humor could be my second…”

“Perhaps it’s my inner romantic speaking, but I could see myself dying for love. There’s a certain nobility to the prospect of sacrificing oneself for the one thing or one person that you cherish most in the world. I’ve yet to find… er… the one to awaken such… feelings within me but I’ve read and seen enough to assure myself that my time shall come. And by time, I hope it’s not the death way.”

“I’ve always questioned the concept of fate. It is such a prominent aspect of mythology and religion that it begs the question, even now: are our lives pre-determined from the moment we are born? Or is it within us to control what will happen to us? By changing ourselves, can we change our future? The outcome of our actions?”

“I’ve always found it an interesting prospect yet… if you believe in fate and apply it to our modern society, does that mean some people are destined to become–” He stops himself, realizing the consequences of his thoughts. “Ah, I’ve said too much. In short, fate.”
