Benjamin Alire SĂĄenz, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
i love the repetition hereâit mirrors the sensation of what theyâre doing, physically and temporally. instead of describing the kiss w flowery diction, the action of kissing is merely repeated, so everything else is stripped away and youâre left with the distilled physiology of it that escalates as each fragment âAnd I kissed himâ is repeated. the fullstops create the illusion of momentum that seems to build to a climax, but thatâs not real bc theyâre suspended in one action, one moment. the asymmetry of the repeated lines and the final, solitary one where âheâ (Dante) reciprocates Ariâs impassioned gesture creates catharsis bc the emotional driveâbordering on desperationâevinced by the repetition of âAnd I kissed himâ is resolved by the quiet affirmation that comes with the reciprocal âAnd he kept kissing me back.â
if itâs meant for me, I will have it. if it isnât, Iâm prepared to receive something even better.
