If I had warned him what was to come, or tried to influence his choices, I wouldāve made things even worse. Staying silent, staying away from him⦠that was the hardest thing Iāve ever done.ā
Every time I blinked, I remembered Halās words on that computer screen, as if theyād been burned onto the back of my eyes: A sacrifice in your future. A choice. But also a betrayal.

āRight now, Iām not too sure,ā Thalia replied, trying her best to make her voice emotionless. She wasnāt lying when she said she didnāt know whether to hug Luke, or give him more than a few black and blue marks- or worse. Yes, she had missed him- the āhimā he was when they, Annabeth, and Grover had been trying to get to camp. But he had changed, now. Everyone had changed, really. She sighed, placing her hands on her hips. āHow about I hug you, and then beat the shit out of you?ā She gave him a small smirk.āSince you are ready for both.ā
He looked at her, she was still very much the same. Still Thalia. He shook his head, "One or the other." He was praying she picked hug, because he didn't want to explain why he had bruises. He did however know he deserved the shit beaten out of him. He just didn't want it. He saved New York that had to stand for something, he did almost die, that had to be enough to save him from the whole of camp, most of the demigods who were around when the whole Kronos thing happened, trying to beat the crap out of him.
Annabeth opened her mouth for a retort, but then immediately closed it. Glancing at him from the corner of her eye, she couldnāt tell if she wanted to laugh to punch him. It only then occurred to her that Luke was one of the only people to call her out on her pride. ā⦠I never really liked fake Chinese food anyways,ā she finally answered, smirking as she returned her attention back in front of her, āAnd bacon it is. Just donāt tell Grover, heās on one of his āSave the Environment, Eat an Aluminum Canā shticks again.ā
Smirked, feeling very triumphant. He had a way with words, always did. But when it came to Annabeth he was almost always matched because she was smart. "Sure you didn't," he said, his tone playful, but mocking anyways. "Well I wont tell Grover if you don't."
I imagined all the normal families living in those cozy homes. I wondered what it would be like to have a home, to know where my next meal was coming from, and not have to worry about getting eaten by monsters everyday. Iād run away when I was only nineā five long years ago. I barely remembered what it was like to sleep in a real bed.
The Diary of Luke Castellan,Ā Rick Riordan (via percyandheroesquotes)
Thalia had slept late, and then had made her way over to the archery range. She had spent nearly two hours there, perfecting her aim in the wind. Due to the loss of the barrier and being a daughter of Zeus, she had a slight control over the weather, just barely enough to conjure up a light wind to practice with. She then had headed over to the battlefield, and had been practice dueling with some Athena children. The children of Ares and Athena and other Huntresses were the only opponents she faced that presented a real challenge. After heading back to the Artemis cabin to shower, Thalia was now walking across the beach, hands in her pocket and half dry hair flowing down her shoulders. In the distance, she saw a figure sitting on the beach. As she got closer to the figure, she realised it was a male, and when she was about 30 feet away, she recognized the profile of someone she could probably recognize in a dark, crowded room just by the sound of a very quiet chuckle or even a cough. She was about 7 feet away when his name popped out of her mouth like a jack-in-the-box. āLuke.ā
Luke looked up when he heard his name, placing the phone in the pocket of his shorts. He knew who it was, it was a voice he would recognize at a rock concert. He gave a cocky grin, "That would be my name, it hasn't changed recently." The scar on his cheek stretched slightly with the smile. He stood up, "What no hug, Thalia, or are you going to punch me? I'm bracing myself for both by the way."
She wasnāt sure if her smile had turned sympathetic or amused, but it laced around her lips either way. Annabeth could still remember the first time she had met May Castellan, though the memory was biased in the way a seven-year old girlās would be. Honestly, the strongest aspect of it was that she didnāt really like the womanās cookies. But even then, despite having been frightened, she knew that May had loved her son very much. The expression on the motherās face couldnāt be deciphered by Annabeth at the exact moment the three had them had scampered from the house, but now she knew that it had been concern. A wholehearted, deep-rooted concern that touched her even now. āThe student always surpasses the master,ā she pointed out with a smirk, turning back and heading for the square, āIt says so in fortune cookies. What are you craving? I donāt know about you, but some really cheesy, really fattening nachos sounds like Elysium.ā
He rose an eyebrow at her, "That's assuming I taught you everything." He smirked, "And of course I didn't." He didn't teach anyone his real tricks, well he taught Percy one or two. But that was different. "Fortune cookies also say 'Wise are they who do not believe they are wise'." He looked at her, hoping she would catch the ironic bit of it. Not that he wasn't calling the child of Athena stupid, he would never do that, but he was making a point. He gave a smile, "As long as we can get bacon on them, I'm in."
Nyssa scowled. Why she took this route she would never know. Well, she did know, it was faster, but still. The sand was getting into her sandals and her feet had gotten wet (sheād needed to take several deep breaths to calm herself after that one). She wasnāt even in a hurry, sheād just thought of this route down the beach and figured there was a reason she thought of this. She tried to appreciate the beauty, and she saw it in the rigid solidness of the trees but looking to her other side and seeing the flowing water made her dizzy and mildly afraid. She closed her eyes without thinking and suddenly pitched forward as her foot caught on something. Spitting out sand, she looked over and saw a face she hadnāt seen in a long while. āSorry Luke,ā she muttered. She glanced around to avoid seeing the water and noticed a decent amount of blood dripping from her knee where she had hit it on a rock. āShit.āĀ
"No problem," he said. He looked at her knee and saw the blood. Cuts and scrapes never really phased him, even after Olympus. But he knew enough about them to know that that was pretty bad, "That cut looks pretty bad, do you need me to take you to get first aid?" He didn't even have a band aid on him.
Luke had been sitting on the beach of the lake for a while. He had been just sitting. Everything was different here. And getting used to it all was hard. Maybe he was just getting old. He felt old, but then again he also felt as though Kronos messed up his internal clock seeing as he was now sleeping through most of the day. He sort of skipped most of the classes anyways, there wasn't much they could teach him that he didn't already know. He pulled out his demiphone and scrolled through the apps, he needed a sword, a new sword. He was currently weaponless which is why he had been avoided the forges, and sword training. No use for a great swordsman to show up without a sword.
At the appearance of his smile, she felt her own resurface as well. It was exactly the same as she always tried to remember- crinkly eyes and smile lines. Mentioning of Manhattan both shot a pang of nostalgia and pain through her, the memories of camp and the war flooding through the dam that she had tried so hard to build. Lukeās easygoing nature was practically contagious though, and, with the way he was talking about it so easily and mentioning his mom, Annabeth couldnāt really find it in herself to feel too uncomfortable. It was only then that she realized that she was still clinging on to him, and she took a step back with a sheepish laugh. āNever were one to whine about injuries,ā she smirked, unconsciously looking him over to make sure that there werenāt any foreign wounds present, āIām really glad that sheās okay though. Iām sure she loved having you over. And Iām glad youāre here- just in time for things to get normal again, too. Or as normal as it could ever be hereā¦ā At this, Annabeth bit the side of her lip, wondering what had made their parents change their minds. This was ultimately pushed away by more pressing matters though, namely the blue-eyed boy standing in front of her. Taking in the alert stance that only came with prolonged time away from a āsafe havenā such as the island, she couldnāt help but guess that he probably hadnāt been spending the last couple months lazing around like the rest of them. āWant to get some food?ā she offered, jerking her thumb behind her toward the general direction of the square, āI was actually going to go train, but⦠I figured that you probably didnāt want to get your butt kicked just as you came back.ā
When she took a step back, Luke hid the pang of sadness that hit him. He rather she just stayed clinging to him, he rather they just have one continuous hug. He nodded, "After she got over the initial anger of me running away when I was nine, things were pretty smooth sailing then." He smirked. That was the honesty of the situation. Luke had run away, and he had no idea how it affected his mother at the time, he just thought she was to far gone to care, but she did. He looked at her, "Well someone is confident in my fighting skills, but I get it, I get it. No need to embarrass yourself or anything, when I guy who hasn't been here for a while beats you. But yeah we can get food," he laughed. He clearly didn't care what he was doing he was with Annabeth, old memories resurfaced, he clearly had not moved on, but that was besides the point. Annabeth wasn't running in the opposite direction at the site of him. That had to say something.
Father and son ā¦
Seeing him take a bite of the fruit reminded her of what initiated her pursue of the boy but there was something charming about the blonde that made Dani push aside her urge to call him out. āYeah, Mr. D is always a blastĀ to talk to,ā she chuckled, rolling her eyes as she did so. The last time they spoke, he called her Demi and that name only reminded her of a singer she wasnāt too fond of. āNah, not really. Excellent sword fighters arenāt that scary. Itās nice to meet you too, Luke. Have you been at the island for a while now or did you just get here?ā
Gave a smirk, "Don't I know it, one to many pranks on him and he banned me from leaving my cabin for a week. Not like I'm like that any more." He still was, he just didn't pull the pranks on Mr. D, and he got very good at hiding the fact that it was him who did it. He looked at her, "That's because we are nice people," he could be scary, he had been scary. But he was a nice person, or he was tried to be. But there were always be people who hated him, always. "I got here a few days ago. Its different from camp, that's for sure."
His name suddenly rung a bell in her head. āOh, werenāt you the camp leader?ā She asked before rambling, āWell, before this place was an island. Would it be island leader now? Island leader sounds a bit odd, like some sort of dictatorship or something.ā After noticing how off topic she was going, she shook the boyās hand and replied, āIām Dani, I donāt think we ever got the chance to speak around camp Half-blood. Iāve heard a lot about you, though.ā
He gave a nod, "Yes, but that was quite a while ago." He took another bite of the apple, glad to have skated over the fact that he had just stolen it. "I'm not sure if I'd be that, I probably should get more acquainted with the Island, and talk with Mr. D all that good stuff." He gave a shrug, "Sorry about that, not speaking back at camp that is." He then sighed, everyone had heard about him, infamous Luke Castellan most famously known as the lightening, and the body of Kronos. "Well I hope my reputation doesn't scare you away or anything. Nice to meet you Dani."
It was no secret that Dani hardly helped around with her family since she wasnāt the best at tending-or more she couldnāt tend at all-so when one of her brothers ask her to take care of his fruit cart for a few hours there was no way she could avoid this task. She was actually surprised at how much people would pay for a single apple. Suddenly, a blonde boy caught her attention. He looked familiar but she couldnāt place his name. Her curiosity turned into irritation when she noticed him taking a fruit using the five finger discount. She decided to pursue the boy, seeing that her brother was coming back. When he turned, she was a bit taken back; she didnāt expect him to approach her so willingly. āHi,ā she returned, not entirely sure what to say back.
He gave her a smirk. There were so many people he didn't know. He remembered a time when he knew every camper and there name. But then again that was because he happened to teach sword fighting so he came across every camper. He would have to ask if he could continue to teach. After all he was the best, despite what anyone said. Percy had only defeated him a few times, and that was under special circumstances. "I'm Luke," he greeted sticking a hand out, "I don't believe I've met you."
If thereās one thing Iāve learned; you canāt give up on family.
Luke slid out of bed. He really needed to get his normal sleep schedule back. What he had going on was insane, and it made him miss most of the day. He thought all that would end when the war ended but no. It stayed the same. He quickly brushed his teeth, the island and manor still feeling quite a bit foreign to him. He headed out for the day, and made his way to the Island square while there he saw an apple cart, and picked one off, without paying. Stealing was a natural ability of his, he heard someone behind him and turned around while taking a bite out of the apple, "Hello," he greeted nonchalantly.
