“My Deltarune” Theory - Gaster's Motives
UT Gaster’s research into the power of souls and determination as a resource that could be used to fuel the underground led him to discover the time altering properties of determination. (if frisk/the player and flower were able to utilize save files, who’s to say gaster was not capable of similar things as a result of his years of work?) Upon learning about the existence of alternate timelines, I believe he had the goal to bring all citizens of the underground to an alternate world (the world of deltarune) to save them from their entrapment in the underground. He didn’t just want power, or knowledge, or go too far in one of his experiments. Not dissimilar to alphys, he just wanted the monsters he gave hope to, as their royal scientist, to be able to live happily on the surface. To him there was no sacrifice on his part that would be too great, if it meant saving them all. I think his time-warping determination shenanigans are related to the skelebros weirdness, why they remembered resets, why lots of people theorize both ut and deltarune sans and possibly papyrus are one and the same. I’ve never seen people talk about UT gaster’s motives beyond the strange, mysterious, and sometimes villainous archetype we have all just agreed to associate with him. We think he’s just doing the survey program and all this stuff for the love of the game, or because he’s just curious. I personally don’t think that’s the case. He’s the devil! His number is 666! But chara was also associated with demonic traits. So are goats, and technically all of our beloved characters are “monsters”. I think, like every other friend we make in undertale, gaster cares deeply for his fellow monsters, and wants nothing more than for them to be happy and safe on the surface, no matter the cost, no matter how hard he has to try, no matter what happens to him.
