Skye glanced at the house, a smile crossing her face. This would definitely be perfect. She couldn’t wait to get some shots of this for a vlog; her viewers were gonna love this house. Hell, she loved the house. She couldn’t wait to get inside and start exploring the place. She was certain that it would make a great backdrop for this adventure. “Tomorrow, I’m going to get some great exterior shots when the lighting is better,” she said, making a list to herself rather than speaking to anyone else. “I can’t wait to get this going.”
There many things that Faye didn’t understand. As she watched Skype walk around the halls of the house, she knew this was just another number on that list. Instead, her lips were pulled into an effortless smile- one that’s been rehearsed many times in the past twenty four hours. “So you’re more excited about filming or well- vlogging?” Her brows rose, unsure if her vocab was used correct. But she moved on quickly. “Then seeing us all?”
The house was eerily silent as Eleanor stepped through the front door. With her suitcase in her left hand and Patty in her right, she glanced around the extravagant mansion, wondering for a brief moment if this was all the sinister plot of a bad horror movie. Truthfully it had all the makings of one– a group of college aged kids, a large mansion, tons of alcohol and bad vibes in the air. On the other hand, the same traits the made the trip seem like a horror film could also make it seem like a bad mtv reality show. And she wasn’t sure which she’d prefer to be apart of. Probably the horror movie.
Setting her bag and Patty down, Eleanor looked at the clock on her phone. 3 A.M.? She sighed deeply, knowing her friends would probably be asleep. God, it was so typical of her to arrive late. Even though she made it a point to leave her hotel earlier than necessary. Nantucket island was a confusing maze of suburban houses and tennis courts. It wasn’t her fault, really.
She headed into the kitchen to scope out the snack situation and found herself staring mindlessly at the open refrigerator. Why was she here again? Why did she think it was a good idea to spend three months with her old friends? Everything was different, she was different, and whatever connections she had probably wouldn’t be there anymore. That scared her. She had lost so much over the past few years, the most important being herself. The brunette was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn’t notice someone standing right beside her. “Holy shit, you scared the hell out of me!”
Due to her nature, Faye often couldn’t sleep at a reasonable time. This spurred a certain restlessness to rattle her bones, the ache around her ankle almost unbearable by the eve of the morning. In college, this helped her waste hours studying for an exam but now- trapped in a house filled with practically strangers- it was quite unfortunate. Her eyes got tired of tracing the edges of the street light that outlined in the room, so she very quietly got out of her bed and did her best to sneak out without waking up her roommate whom was still sleeping.
It didn’t take her long before she realized that she had left her cell phone back in the room, but she figured she’d find something to watch on the television that showed little signs of ever being used. But as one hand steadied itself on the railing and the other smoothed against the wall, Faye figured that it would take her a while to get used to the luxury that this house provided. It certainly wasn’t close to her actual house or the apartment that she had near campus when she had been in school. The adjustment would probably wouldn’t have to be forced; especially when it was only a temporary stay. The summer would come and go- calling for each of them to return back to their normal lives and fall back into the cycle of forgetting each other.
Her feet weren’t dressed with socks; cold against the tile as she sat comfortably in the sofa and pulled the blanket against her body as she looked for the remote. Before she could even turn it on, Faye heard a ruckus in the other room and her curious nature encouraged her to stand up and follow the sound. She was sure that no one else would be up at this time. “Well, shit-” The girl cursed, one hand settling against the edge of the wall as she composured herself . “What’s got you up this late? Missing home already?”
“Do you want a hit?” Jesse offered the bong to the other person. The boy was feeling a little overwhelmed by his surroundings and decided to hang out on the beach for a while. Little did he know someone already beat him there. Jesse almost turned back before deciding to say fuck it, the more the merrier. Noticing their hesitance, the boy added, “Come on, it’s summer. No one cares if you get high on the beach.”
Faye eyed the plastic device carefully, almost as if she was skeptical about the fact that he’d even ask her such a question. After all, he had known her as the type of girl that kept her head down in textbooks and aspiring to getting a 4.0 GPA, not the partier that she had become in college. “That’s not exactly what I’m worried about-” Her lips remained pursed for a moment longer, eventually letting her hand reach forward to accept the gesture. “You’ve got the lighter, right?”
“I honestly think I’m in a dream. This place is awesome! We seriously have to do something as group when everyone gets here.”
“Oh yeah? I’m sure that would go well with the rest. Don’t get me wrong, the house- or well, mansion- is breath taking. But I’m sure we could all catch up tomorrow. You know- after a good night’s sleep.”
Delia stood frozen on the pathway that led up to the house that she would be calling home for the summer – a ghost of a thought lingered under her anxieties: ‘who in their right mind would call this a house?’ it was larger that her childhood home undoubtedly – and her heart was in her throat as she considered the possibilities of how this summer would go. It could go well. It could. She was hoping that would be the case – but it was just as likely it would turn out the opposite. The group of them were surely no longer the people they were in high school.
Her feet felt like lead as she finally brought herself to take a few steps forward – the sound of footsteps behind her caused her to stop once more, and to look over her shoulder. A wave of emotion washed over her as she recognized her old friend – nostalgia, wistfulness, reminiscence – and a shaky smile rose to her face. “Good timing on your part,” her voice was soft, and her gaze flickered between them and the house, “I really didn’t want to go in alone.”
A certain uneasiness had settled in Faye’s gut ever since she had stepped onto the driveway; her teeth already pulling at her lips in an undeniable bad habit of hers as she carried the rest of her bags up the tiny hill. It certainly hadn’t been her idea to come, but eventually- her mind had found more pros than cons. The free rooming and booze were on the top of the list, as Faye was the type to not really like confrontation and it certainly felt like it when she had seen the group of friends all in the same room. They all had the same faces that Faye remembered, but their hearts and stories changed so much that made it hard for the woman to recognize any one of them at first.
The same applied to the person that she had once considered her best friend. Delia had been standing near the back of the room the entire ceremony and with Faye’s determination to slip out without being noticed, she had caught sight of her petite figure. Though it had been partly her fault for cutting Delia off, she still missed her most days and she wondered if that was ever going to change. And it all seemed to play itself naturally once Faye settled her eyes on the front door and saw the very same recognizable figure in the dark. “I hardly doubt they’re all waiting on the other side of the door-” Her smile and voice was tight, the grip on her bag becoming tighter as the feeling in her gut only increased. “You would have been just fine without me.”
With the twist of her wrist, Faye wedged her foot so that it would fit against the plastic edge of the door. She was half surprised that she had managed to even make it open smoothly as her hands were preoccupied holding a novel that was thick in hopes to pass the time and a blanket that dressed her shoulders to mask the slight breeze. There wasn’t a part of her that felt comfortable being back here- seemingly locked into a few acres of land to what everyone else had loosely called time to ‘reminiscence’ . But all Faye wanted was a glass of red wine and perhaps, her nice and comforting slippers to dress her feet. But as the sound of the crickets chirping and the waves settling against the sand sought for her attention, Faye made herself comfortable on a plastic chair outside the building, half preoccupied with checking the missed messages that appeared on her cellphone. A part of her wondered then, if it was the best time now to let herself see the pictures that were expertly hidden away in its own folder on her phone. Instead, she threw her phone to the table on her side with a frustrated sigh as she settled back into the chair. Her feet were propped along the metal railing along the balcony, and her eyes settled to appreciate the view before her - and that was something she could appreciate. It had been ages since Faye had seen the ocean or even anything of the similar likes. But as expected in a house as big as this, the silence was interrupted by the abrupt opening of the door behind her. Her head tentatively peered to the side, not really feeling the need to greet the person before resting her head back on the chair. “It’s nice, don’t you think? Definitely better than high school.” She eventually voiced in the uncomfortable silence.

EXTRA BITS;
her junior year of high school, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. faye has always been so close to her mother, so when her mother grew very ill, it really affected faye and hardened her usual bright personality. her mother then passed away senior year, which only depressed faye even more and that’s where she began to feel disconnected from everything. it was hard for her to keep sociable and even keep motivated for college.
faye went on to medical school, but suffered a horrible anxiety attach where she was forced to take a year off. this really unsettled her father since they’re not close to each other anymore. this was a bump on the road but faye is dealing.
