“I know he’s not a nice guy for wanting to steal Christmas from all those people but dessert is dessert.” Irey said with a giggle. “But same here I rather go out with friends than a date where it might get bored. I mean I haven’t been on one but I imagine it can get boring.”

“Irey someone could put a cheesecake in front of you and you’d claim they were your soulmate or something,” she spoke with a giggle teasing the other. “We’ll have to go out to an ice cream parlour or something that sounds much more fun than hanging out with the grinch,”

“i mean, we’re talking about you,” he tilts his head to the side, tone laced with mockery. “i wouldn’t expect you to be the most exciting villain. maybe a toddler villain. you know, the bothersome ones that you only deal with because they’ll keep annoying you unless you make them feel important,” he’s quick to throw the insults as if they’re nothing. maybe the animosity is partly his fault too, after all. “now, that’s smarter than i’d see coming from you.” mateo just shrugs, truth be told, he doesn’t care at all about what she thinks he should or shouldn’t do. or what she thinks in general. “staring at people? you must really think way too high of yourself if you think i was staring at you. last i checked my eyes were free to look anywhere, you just happened to be there. but, hey, plenty of tables around if you’re so bothered,” he gestures around to the vacant tables around them. 

“you enjoy being an asshole is that it?” she scoffed, doing her best to pay the other little attention, even if his words seem to manage to pinpoint her insecurities. she didn’t want to play the villain and yet that was always going to be the role she played into. “i suppose artemis is a villain too huh,  i dare you to say that to her face,” it made her sick, to know that she had no chance of changing people’s dispositions towards her. matteo thought she was a villain and there was nothing she was going to be able to do to change his mind and to just make it worse she had to share a dorm room with this guy. “oh shut up mateo go find someone else to irritate,” she knew even saying that that she was giving him the upper hand but at this point she was just too angry to really care “nice try but i’m not moving,” luckily she could be stubborn too. “i unlike you, actually have to get work done which you know is what a library is for, instead of just insulting people,”

“You should try not eating so much that fast. I know that’s sort of our thing, but still.” Wally teases her, looking over at her with a smile still. It was important to him that she would get to live like a normal kid, someone that was more than just to be used for a fight. She was a great person from what he’s gotten to know. She fit right in with the family. “You know that’s because I am an old man. I’ve never been birdwatching, but always time to start.”

“maybe you should have warned me, because clearly i had no idea,” she replied increasing her own ignorance. terra loved the fact that she was able to joke with wally, even if it had been a little strange to begin with. she cringed now when she thought of the way she had reacted to things in those first few weeks. she had been expecting something terrifying though she had found the opposite. “seems a little boring though, doesn’t it? just standing still and watching the world go by or something like that,”

“Even if they do, I’m ready. Don’t doubt me, sis.” He tells her with a wide and confident smile, though he means his words. It’s not just a joke in reaction to Terra poking fun at him, it’s a promise, a dedication to what he’s best at. Apollo knows he can take care of himself and anyone else who’s around, it’s what he’s been training for. “You’re my sister, it’s totally different. You’re allowed to know where I’m going, that doesn’t mean I’m predictable.” His expression softens a little at Terra’s words and he can’t help but tilt his head to the side a little. “How so? School? Family? What’s got you feeling behind?”

“even flashes get tired stupid,” she replies refusing to back down. in that moment it didn’t feel like she was ever going to get used to words like sis or sister. she didn’t deserve them, didn’t deserve the one saying them but she knew if she tried to tell apollo such things that he wouldn’t listen to her. he was too much like wally in that regard. always seeing the best in her even when it wasn’t there. “i’m not-” she goes to correct him before shutting herself up. “school i guess i don’t know,” her eyes become incredibly focused on her feet as she talks. “it’s the smaller things, references i don’t get at the lunch table, bands i’ve never even heard of,” she took a breath having to trust apollo an incredible amount to even admit such a small thing. “it’s easy to just throw myself into pushing my abilities and forget everything else,”

“What if he took you to a place where one, you didn’t have to pay for anything and two, that had the best desserts in the world? Would you still say no?” She said to her sibling as she wiggled her eyebrows. 

“playing the dessert card is mean,” terra giggled looking over at the other female. “but yes! forget the green fur he’s just not a good person irey! besides i’d much rather go with people i actually liked rather than a stupid date,”

“Greys?” He squints, the reference not clicking in his tired mind at first. Or after a pause. He should be asleep. Or just call out. Unacceptable, he would help her, nap, and then go to work. “oh, the doctor show. yikes.”

He reached for the textbook, sat it between them, and began thumbing through the pages. Finding the chapter on plant biology, he sped through the chapter. “Alright.” a pause. “Yeah, this makes sense. Sort of. It’s difficult, but you’ll get it.” Looking down at the sheet in front of them, this still wasn’t material that he was comfortable with. But. He was trying. She asked for help, growth on her end. And he was helping with something he knew nothing about, growth on his end. “Nonvascular land plants are embryophytes that lack the vascular tissues xylem and phloem. They include mosses, liverworts and hornworts. That’s question one. The mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. And then- we- you have to pick one to draw and diagram.”

physics she understood. things that could possibly impact her powers her father had made sure to tutor her on. though she wasn’t sure how he could have simply disregarded chemistry and biology she wasn’t sure but it wasn’t as if she could just turn around and ask him. 

she raised a brow at him then, watching him trying to figure stuff out. “if you don’t get it then really there’s no hope for me,” she was joking mostly, but she did have an enormous amount of faith in fletcher’s ability. the west kids were smart that was something she had learnt about them pretty quickly. there were points where terra could have sworn even thea got things quicker than her. “alright,” she nods, writing down the answer as the other talks. “i’m guessing you’re not up for finding your inner devinci huh?” she comments. still she was feeling alright about it so long as fletch was there to make sure she didn’t make too much of a fool of herself. so she grabs her pencil case and falls silent for a few moments before pushing the paper towards the other. “how’s that?... thanks, for this i mean, i’m sorry i woke you up,”

Wally chuckles softly. “Yeah, that’s a brain freeze alright. It might be better to do it in smaller bites.” The man says as he takes another spoonful of his own. There was nothing better than this so it made the trip out here so much worth it. He was happy to see that Terra looks as if she was enjoying herself though. “We’ll have to do this more often. It’s important to not forget to enjoy the simple things.”

“don’t laugh at me,” she spoke though the giggles gave away the fact she wasn’t really annoyed. “this is awful!” she was however touched that wally wanted to do this for her, taking her across country just so she could have the right first experience of ice cream meant also spending time with someone. something her father had hardly ever done. “now you’re sounding like an old man,” she spoke playfully. still it was a reminder she needed given how focused she was on bettering her powers. “after this your going to make me go birdwatching or something,”

Artemis made it a point to leave her school office unlocked, at this point having far too many people she told “you’re ALWAYS welcome,” to really leave it closed. Besides that, all her valuables were at her hospital office, where she spent much more time. So to see Terra sitting there, headphones in, waiting even brought a smile to her lips, glad Terra could find somewhere to find peace in the first place, a little honored her space was chosen.

“well hey there,” she greets softly, waving a little hand in greeting as she sets her papers down on her desk, “bad day? Or just needed quiet?”

going to wally west of all people had been a bit of a surreal experience. despite how good he (and indeed the rest of the family) had been to her, there was still at points the voice in the back of her mind telling her that they would betray her. she was designed to be their destruction. as soon as they really came to know what that meant they would leave her behind, and then she would have no one. Still the voice in her mind had nothing to say about artemis the closest thing she had to a mother. the one who had been in her position long before she had. She was supposed to be better than human attachments and yet, she found herself clinging to artemis anyway.

“hey,” she greets in return. “just some space,” and your company she leaves out. She needed a reminder that she was doing okay even if she was too stubborn to admit it. “and wanted to check in. long day?”

location: the festival

balancing isabela on his hip, the ghostbuster and his little marshmallow monster traversed the festival.  ❛ it’s so busy here! i’m trying to keep bela from a sugar overload from how much candy people are giving her, but i feel like that’ll be impossible. ❜ of course, bart is mostly kidding. he’s making sure she’s moderating how much candy she eats. there will be lots and lots of dessert leftovers for days to come. 

“it’s because she’s adorable,” terra laughed looking at bart. a solid reminder that not everyone in her bloodline was bad. she was awkward around children really, but he and jamie had given her plenty of time to be around bela and between her and thea she felt like she was at least beginning to get the hang of it. “besides from what apollo and fletcher have told me halloween is all about sugar it’s what makes it so much fun or something,”

 “It doesn’t make any sense yet.” He corrected, looking down at the paper. Fletcher had been fine with the four siblings. Apollo, his best friend and twin. Irey and Jai, the other twins. And Thea, the baby. When he was introduced to Terra, he hadn’t expected to take to her like he did. He was always busy, and hardly had time for the others. But he had found time for Terra, like he always had with everyone else. And they had bonded and now- he was awake when he should be asleep, looking over plant biology.

“Pulling a scam like that would involve watching a lot of scientifically accurate medical t.v. shows but, they don’t exist.” He sighed. “multicellular eukaryotes, slime molds, mycetozoa.” Confusing. Alright. It was fine, it was plant biology. Not Fletcher’s cup of tea but he knew this. Sort of. “Do you have the textbook with you?” Because, but to teach her than to tell her. Also, to confirm that he wasn’t making it up as he went along. 

she rolls her eyes affectionately as the other spoke, used to fletcher by now. he’s become a part of her support system that she now wouldn’t be able to cope without. he understood her even on the days where she just wanted to be quiet and stay hidden in her dorm room, which meant more to her than she was ever really going to be able to tell him, unless she got really sappy, which terra tended to avoid where she could. they knew how grateful she was for all of them in different ways. that was more than enough for her. 

“don’t ruin the illusion fletch,” she joked. it was wasn’t like she really minded all that much. “some of us just love to watch grey’s,” another joke. “oh yeah i do,” she speaks getting up and moving to search through her beck before going back to him, book in hand before giving it to him. “i’m not sure how useful this will be, i’m almost certain it’s in another language,”

“nope! Oof, it felt so good,” she hummed happily. She had no regrets. She couldn’t help the little look she shot terra, “yeah well, try living with the cop that arrested your dad and tell me how fond you are of them,” she says wryly with a sigh, “it’s cops that need to learn that lesson, not me,” she points out.

“i bet,” she laughed before she expression sobered quite a bit. in a strange way wasn’t that exactly what she was doing now. living with people who had fought her father. still she shoved the thought aside cassie’s father was antman not reverse flash. “oh i’m sorry that can’t have been easy... i just meant that my brother, foster brother is a cop and he’s a good person, so they can’t all be awful,”

Wally just wants the best for Terra, so showing her the best that the world has to offer is all he’s focused on when they’re training together. He knows personally he was a little strange, but he means well of course. “You’re right. I did get chocolate, it has fudge in it too.” He grins as he nudges her gently before the ice cream comes out just as quick as they ordered it. He puts a spoon in each bowl and hands it over to Terra. “Try it, you’ll be so amazed.”

that’s where the wests differed from her father or her aunt. they didn’t see her as an annoyance or just someone to use for her powers. she was a person, why else would you drag someone across the country for food? “of course it does,” she shook her head despite the fact that she was grinning. deciding to humour him at least for now. she took a big spoonful of the treat in front of her only to cringe a moment later. “i think that’s what they call a brain freeze,”

Apollo had no problems welcoming Terra into the family. She might not have been here for too long but she’s still his sister, as far as Apollo’s concerned, and she always will be. “Maybe, but I doubt someone’s gonna come for me when I’m fresh off a shift.” Not necessarily true, Apollo knows that there’s danger all around all the time, but he doesn’t want to worry his sister. Besides, he never minds when she comes to see him - it’s nice to spend some time together. “Uh excuse me, I am definitely not predictable thank you very much.” He grins and looks over at Terra. “Needed to clear your head?”

it had confused her to begin with, the fact that apollo had been so willing to simply accept her into the family. it was a kindness she had never really known before and she hadn’t known to how to react to it. “you never know,” she shrugged playfully. there was not a single doubt in her mind that really apollo was going to be fine, but she did, as always enjoy the chance to catch up with him. “oh really, then how was i able to know exactly where you were??” she asks gently. “it’s no big deal, i just get stressed out sometimes y’know. i feel like i’m behind with just about everything,”

mateo didn’t actually expect the girl to turn out to be a double agent ⏤ at least not anymore ⏤, she’d gained more than enough trust to put her evil master plan in place if that had been the case ( and he’d have probably been stabbed in his sleep ), still, it didn’t stop it from being one of his favorites jabs toward the girl. the two just didn’t seem to get along, it was a wonder they’d been able to share a dorm for this long. if anyone was to ask the boy, of course, he’d put the blame on terra. it’s not like she had tried to be anything but irritating this whole time. “maybe not everyone knows it, but it could be a pretty solid cover, wouldn’t it?” he retorts. “you were the one who came at me when i was just minding my own business. so, really, who’s bothering whom?”

terra had never been the person who needed other people to like her. she had grown up only being able rely on herself, and once upon a time she would have stated that would never change. hence why she didn’t find herself doing her best to make the other like her, matty could do what he wanted at least most of the time she didn’t care. she was just grateful that the wests didn’t seem to share his suspicions, as what she would do without the family she wasn’t sure. they’d given her a home, she wasn’t stupid enough to forget the fact. mateo however had been nothing more than a headache in the time that they had been sharing a dorm together, and really terra would have asked for a change of room mate, but she didn’t want it to seem like she was unhappy. “pretty solid cover for the worlds most boring villain maybe, please if i was doing something i wouldn’t be that stupid to do it around you,” she spat with a huff. “well maybe you should think about that before you start staring at people,”

Besides its the grinch, if I think he’s being a snob, i’ll just take my food to go and run away so fast before he even knows what the heck is going on. And he changes at the end anyway, his heart grows big or something like that. I think I remember that from the movie.”

“alright you have a point,” the girl laughed with a nod of her head. though she raises her brows just a moment later. “isn’t he also like green and fury. even if his heart grew it doesn’t change that fact... not the type of person i’d really wanna go to dinner with at any point,”

“you’re kidding!!” terra replied with a grin. “cassie that’s totally awesome,” she didn’t have time for bigots of any kind so of course she was going to approve of such a display. “you’d be surprised the amount of people who are just not what you thought they’d be,”
