Make your college house a home.
I’m sure a lot of yous off to university in the autumn are buzzing at the thought of your own space to dwell in, after all, so am I. Here are a few pieces of wisdom I will leave with you:
- First of all, we all know the mountain hike that is university/college. We’ll be bombarded with various assignments and reading lists etc., as well as hectic nights out and most likely a buzzing atmosphere right outside your door. This leads me to believe that your room should be a place where you can relax and mentally unwind. be sure to keep it as minimal as possible. This is coming from the most maximalist lass you’ll ever know, so it won’t be easy, but I know I’ll thank myself at 2am when my eyes hurt from staring at a screen, or my throat hurts from laughing and singing, and I don’t enter a room that resembles a crack den. Light colours also do you good, no matter what kind of aesthetic you are. In conclusion, prioritise comfort and mental ‘zen-ness’ above all when considering interior decor. Or maybe you’re a logical person who doesn’t dedicate so much as a fancy as to where they sleep, so long as there’s a bed, and to you I say touché, carry on.
- I like to think your home life was pleasant enough that you’ll miss your home at least a little when you leave. A good idea would be to start off with duvet covers from home. Not only is it cheaper, but you’ll still have that lingering home cotton smell to cling onto amidst the lonelier spans of the night. Also known as Sad Boi Hours™.
- If you’re like me and actually enjoyed living with your family, thus causing this experience to fill you with nothing short of plain dread, I suggest bringing something that makes an alien room familiar. It could be your mother’s favourite mantelpiece, your father’s old perfume. I’m bringing a lantern that my sister bought from China town. It hangs on my curtain rod at home, the first thing I see every morning, So for those first three seconds of the morning, I’m home.

about us
gratissimum! ‘Tis I, your average bright-eyed youth who is a mere month away from delving into the adventure that is university! So off I dove on my quest to prepare for this journey, scouring the web and Pinterest and the neighbour’s dog for ideas and lo and behold, there was no one place that tells all. Therefore fellow freshmen kids, it is at this moment that we shall make our own. Join me in my uni days that I hope will flow with the perfect mix between wisdom and aesthetic. College is a scary place, so let’s look out for each other. maybe one day, if friends do in fact follow me through this academic maze, we can learn from and about one another, from course details to how to press flowers, to how to organise lecture notes... it’s all here, and with your help, it can be more.
