My generations grew up watching the same TV show over the course of their entire school career. That's why Star Trek, for example, has such a large fanbase.
Seven seasons of Voyager means those characters accompanied me for seven years. That's why so many people are attached to shows and characters.
Guys. It's because studios have to raise their employee's wages after a certain number of seasons are ordered. They're "ordering" a regular season length amount of episodes, chopping it up, and then marketing it to you when it's finished as multiple seasons.
It's capitalism and greed. It's always one of those two things.
