Captain’s Log: Stardate 2022.359
My First Officer, Mr. Spock, and I have just returned from another trip through the Guardian. [Location redacted due to Starfleet Ultra-Top Security classification.]
Our mission was to check on the welfare and societal cohesion of the M Class planet last visited on stardate 2021.359. I’m aware that it was my judgment that this planet be left alone for another 199 years, however, Admiral Nogura decided otherwise.
Local space is now populated by two space stations. One operated solely by a country called China. The other is crewed by several nationalities. Mr. Spock picked up scans which showed there was a recent trip by a small capsule around their one large moon. So, some progress has been made. However, as stated in his previous report, warp technology remains generations in their future.
The virus that plagued the planet last year is still evident. Fatalities have decreased, but they now have 2 other endemic viruses causing significant disease and death. Surprisingly, the populace appears only slightly concerned. Simple wearing of masks is rare. Mr. Spock has picked up transmissions from a planetary communication system called “Social Media” stating that people are just “so tired” of the pandemic that they are now just ignoring it. When told about their attitude, our CMO, Dr. McCoy, was incredulous. (Note: he is still not allowed to interfere by bringing them our universal vaccine. Such flagrant disregard of the Prime Directive would not be tolerated, regardless of the humanitarian benefit.)
The planet is undergoing obvious climate change. Their oceans have warmed, causing more severe and frequent hurricanes. Many glaciers, lakes, and river systems that were observed last year have substantially decreased in size. There is also evidence of forest fires which have swept through large swatches of the landscape. What steps the populace is instigating to ameliorate these effects are negligible.
A war has broken out on one of the continents. The smaller country is being bombed by a larger aggressor, but has, so far, held their own, even though their infrastructure and civilian populace have paid a terrible price. What a waste! If only these people could work cohesively for the betterment of all, their future possibilities would be brilliant.
Recommendation: This planet is still not suitable for contact from the UFP.
