Exhibit A:

McCoy knows what Jim’s relationship with Hunter was. He knew that Jim loved her deeply, that she loved him deeply, that one of Kirk’s deepest regrets is not having agreed to join her space polycule. With all of this info, he says: I know you feel, truly, I do. Wonderful.

Exhibit B:

Hunter (from Exh.A) tells him that Jim trusted him more than anyone else, including her. Earlier in the book, it’s shown exactly how deep Hunter&Jim’s trust in each other runs. Cool.

Exhibit C:

Bones is Jim’s executor. And in his will, Kirk leaves a message for Bones telling him just how much he values him as a friend.

The Enterprise has been sent to negotiate reaccession to the Federation with an isolationist religious group known as the Kindred. While there, Jim notices that some of the children seem to be gravely ill. The problem is, the Kindred practice faith healing and refuse to allow a doctor to be brought in. So Jim does what he does best: he improvises.
