Final print

Final Piece done and in mount

Module Evaluation - 5104

Overall, I am happy with the outcomes and my final pieces. I started this module strongly disliking all types of video making and avoiding it at all costs. However, once I got into the swing of filming and editing footage and understanding what a difference it can make if you know how to edit appropriately to suit the style and make it look professional in Premier Pro.

There were many problems I endured along the way, especially with the final pieces and less so with the build up believe it or not! Specifically the editing software Premier pro crashed every 5 minutes instead of saving and lost my work each time. Also the printing onto fine newsprint with a large electric graphic printer which ripped it on each slide.

There are a number of different things I would change, however I feel like they are minor details unless they are something which would have been virtually impossible with the given time. Shooting all of the footage myself was hard work but paid off in the end. However, I am happy with my outcomes and feel they have turned out in the best standard I could've wished for.

New skills have been acquired which will help me in the future and I have softened to the idea of film overall as a less daunting medium.

These are my images which have been scanned in and manipulated in photoshop in order to get the correct filter to create an older looking print.I had to match up the colours exactly while creating in inDesign, but then switched over to photoshop, and after back to inDesign! inDesign worked the best for me in terms of perfecting a final piece and editing the images perfectly in the right layout to be able to print.

The particular font I wanted to find to use was something along the lines of newspaper font. While looking at a number of different newspapers, it was lucky that it was the same year as the titanic so newspapers have been kept and maintained due to this particular event.

Some research was done into font styles as I thought this would be quite important due to the fact that newspaper headlines have to be quite grippign. After much research, I decided to go with the font displayed above. However it wasn't possible to have this font after I fund it so I decided to draw out my own version of it closely mimicking the same style as it matches well with the newspaper headline. Also as I drew it myself it had more of an authentic look to it.

Film editing - Premier Pro

Changes to video

To begin with, the original version of this video didn't entirely work. From my feedback, I wanted to change a number of things. Firstly, the length; this was important because I feel even I began to lose interest in the interview. It has gone from 25 to 11 to 4 and a half minutes long.

Secondly the sound was another main concern, while I haven't made any new footage, I chose some with better sound quality and better chance to be able to cut out the sound in Premiere Pro, however I still ensured that all the information I wanted to get across, was being portrayed. I worked particularly with the 'denoiser' and the 'dehummer' in Premier Pro which seemed to work really well minus some faults which ended up enhancing the background noise. The text has all been moved into the centre of the page after looking at some documentaries, I feel the centre aligned text works best. All the questions and statements have been reworded and I have gone from 13 questions down to 4 which works alot better and flows well.

Next, content

What was going to be included within the print was important as it would accommodate the content of the writing to fit the overall advertisement.

I wanted the pictures and the text to work well together. While also taking the more interesting components; to attract the reader. These images I found on the internet under a violano virtuoso guide on how to use the machine.

Display

I want the display of the final piece to look crisp with something delicate and a bit worse for wear inside.

I think this will work perfectly for making it look as close as possible to an artefact.

Only problem with this display technique is that it is double sided and there is only one side of the newsprint printed on.

INSPIRATION -

The first of the images have been the most inspiration to my print work.

I have worked along the exact layout of this newspaper article. It works well to be an advertisement layout. The font being particularly important, It was hard to find the right font to fit the particular era; 1920's. But after some research I found a fitting style which likened to a lot that I found in examples of 20's newspaper headings.

Counter press

There are a number of different companies that work with graphic designers in order to create a service to the public to create their own newspaper and have it printed out. This was a possibility as I could send it my page which I wish to be printed, and they would practically fill in the blanks.

Tutorial with Dan and Stuart

To begin with I proposed my idea to Stuart to create a newspaper print for an article or advertisement displaying the machine; closely related to the image I had found. Having no criticisms towards the idea, we started looking at manipulating some of the images that I had found of the inside of the machine in photoshop in order to simplify them.

Within this tutorial I spoke to Dan about my proposition for my print. He was a little confused and didn't understand why I would be simplifying images. I thought I could possibly create a newspaper article with a new modern style that could look at an artificial machine that would be created as an update of the Violano Virtuoso - which would make sense for the simplifying. He thought that this wasn't a strong enough idea however and I decided to stick to my original advertisement piece.

Lino print Workshop

From past experiences with lino print - I wasn't expecting to get the best results from this workshop. However, previously I hadn't used a professional press in order to print the ink on the card.

Therefore, the outcome of these prints worked quite well. I worked using reduction technique where you begin with one layer and work down into your lino in order to use different colours in your print in different sections.

It worked particularly well because of the colours I used and the depth of the cuts in the lino which aided the production of the print.

In terms of connecting this to my final piece; I don't think that the inconsistency of the prints would help me. Also, carving out text wouldn't have worked to produce a professional look font.

Screen printing workshop

I quite like the authenticity that these prints gave off. And while this would've fit perfectly with the idea of newsprint and matches the actual routine which is taken to print newsprint.

However while attempting this, the writing did not come out in the right way nor was intricate enough at all to show the level of detail that I needed to show with all the fine print as you can see in the violano image, it hasn't printed well nor during the exposure did it get the fine detail.

After working further with screen printing I decided that it was not the easiest nor with the best outcome to create the image that I had in my head.

Given more time for my print, I would've wanted to try some Letterpress, especially after doing alot of research into it. However, the time consumption for something that may not come out right would be catastrophic.

This particular artist, Wilf Whitty has taken a turn from computer generated prints and gone to letterpress.

This would have been a much better idea to go with in order to create an authentic one off piece.
