I never use tumblr because I donāt really get it, but @taylorswift uses it often. So in hopes that sheāll see this. My first Taylor concert was technically a Brad Paisley concert but I only went for Taylor. I was only 15 or 16 so my parents brought me and my brotherās girlfriend at the time. It was at Bethel Woods (an outdoor pavilion on the grounds of the Woodstock) and while she was on stage it started lightening in the background and it was so magical and awesome. My parentās donāt actually like country music (although my dad does love Teardrops On My Guitar and my mom gets down to some T. Swift, but they mainly just brought me) so they were walking around but they came back with signed copies of her album, which my mom bought from Taylorās mom. Taylor said whoever bought anything would be her best friend forever (so technically my mom), but I like to think me. Also, Breathe got me through a tough breakup in college. My mom and I tried to get tickets to MSG jingle ball but ticketmaster screwed it up, but you best believe Weāll be seeing you during the Reputation tour. Anyway, thanks for the mems T. Swift. You da bomb.com <3Ā
Packing for the weekend and Saturday is already looking good. #ssekostyle #ethicalfashion #bebrave #mybravestory
My kind of Saturday. #reading #eating and #drinking #homemade #ssekostyle
Two facts about me: I Love Lucy and Brussels sprouts have been my favorite show and food, respectively, since I was a child.
Me
My first text post. Who am I? Well Iām currently writing this post from my office high up in the Chrysler Building and in the clouds. I am looking out at One World Trade Center, as I do everyday. I often take for granted this view, except for in the winter months when I see the most stunning sunset almost daily.Ā
I live a charmed life. Great job, great apartment, great friends and family (love the word great). For a long time, I was unhappy with all of this. I felt stagnant and as if I wasnāt accomplishing nearly enough in my life. After a lot of self reflection I realized it wasnāt that I was unhappy with anything in my life, but that something was missing. I wasnāt doing anything for my soul. Youāre probably thinking I should read a good book or something, but for me to be truly happy, I need to feel like Iām doing some good in the world. I donāt just mean random acts of kindness (although you should all being doing those regularly as well), but I mean actively doing something that can help make the world a better place.Ā
Since I hadnāt done anything for a long time, I decided to get my feet wet by challenging myself to buy Christmas presents from only socially and ethically conscious companies. I did for everyone except my mom and sister and I was happy with that. I also continued buying from a lot of these places because I loved the products. Then one day I got an e-mail from Sseko about the Fellow program and I decided to look into it and think about it because I have to sleep on things before I take the plunge. Then one day I thought what the heck? I applied to be a Fellow and I got it.Ā
Here I am almost 2 months into being a Fellow and I love it. I get to put on events for people to sell gorgeous products and to make everyone there feel good for just being there. Sseko is all about empowering women and itās not a hoax. We are a community of women who are living our best lives and making our dreams come true, whether that be going to college or feeding your soul. I truly believe that girls are the future of the world and education is the number one thing to make that happen. My dream is to live in a world where all girls (and boys) are able to receive a good education. If all minds were given the same resources to learn and grow, the world would be a far richer place, and I donāt mean economically. Iām taking the steps to make that happen by working with Sseko.
You see, Sseko employs girls in Uganda who are trying to find work during a 9 month gap between high school and college, in order to fund their higher education. They make above a fair wage and save at least half of their paychecks until the end of the 9 months, when Sseko matches 100% of whatever they saved with a scholarship, and these girls go to college. Sseko also employs women in Uganda from all walks of life who have bigger dreams than working for Sseko, but Sseko is giving them the opportunity to make those dreams a reality.
These women inspire me to not only go after all of my dreams, but to be the best me possible. I want to live my best life, and I think that that is exactly what I have been doing the past almost two months.
This blog is meant to be a place for me to release some of my thoughts and energy, Iām sure it will be filled with pictures too and it definitely will not always be this deep or heavy (if you consider this deep or heavy), but Iām not promising anything exactly. This blog will be whatever it is destined to be and Iām not making a plan for it.
You see, Iām just a 27 year old girl living inĀ āthe big cityā figuring out what makes me happy one day at a time and Iāve finally figured out that plans donāt always make me happy and sometimes I just need to let go.
Come join me on this journey (or donāt) and I hope to make you laugh and maybe even a touch of shoe or bag envy.Ā
xoxo
p.s. If you really want to come on this journey and want to learn about Sseko or how to get involved, just message me and Iāll give you allllllll the deets! :)
p.p.s. If you do already have shoe or bag envy from my last post, you can go to ssekodesigns.com and use the code in my banner picture for 10% off! <3Ā
