Sexual Dimorphism: A Guide
So you want to make a fantasy/sci fi race, and you want two distinct sexes. But how do you show that the female aliens are different from the male aliens? If you’re Mass Effect 3′s art director, Derek Watts, you might struggle - “Do you give her breasts? What do you do? Do you put lipstick on her?”
But pinning the blame for this on Watts is unfair; there’s a slew of game developers who have struggled to differentiate between male and female aliens without resorting to human assumptions (that are, anyway, flawed) such as breasts, overall size, and grooming expectations.
This is not how it goes in nature, especially beyond mammals, so I’ve put my day job as an ecologist into use to put together some very brief research into five classifications which could be used as inspiration for not having all of your aliens coincidentally look like sexy human women.
1) Birds
Here’s a broad generalisation about birds: male birds are super pretty and female birds are incredibly boring. A common example is the peafowl (often known as a peacock because the female peafowl, technically known as a peahen, is literally too boring to mention);
How about making your male aliens fancy and your female aliens dull, shapeless brown figures?
2) Plants
Most plants are self fertilising, but some aren’t, like holly. That classic Christmas card look with red berries only occurs in female holly, and their flowers have subtle sex differences too, with the male having yellow stoma and the female having green ova.
3) Herptiles
Sexual dimorphism in herpitles is usually extremely subtle, so here’s a wild idea: have your male and female aliens look the same. If you want a slight variation, perhaps a white stripe like distinguishes male great crested newts from female ones would suit.
5) Fish
Dimorphism in fish can vary wildly, but doesn’t tend to fall in line with human ideals. Perhaps have your male aliens atrophy into a dangling lump attached to the female aliens, like angler fish! (The same occurs in some species of annelida (worms). The more you know!)
5) Insects and arachnids
Females are often many times bigger than males. I know I for one would welcome hulking, multilimbed lady aliens into my games. Many of them also have a habit of eating males of the species. I’m just saying.

Robin is a short narrative game that explores the pitfalls of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, as you attempt to manage your day to day life around the very limited amount of energy you have.
There are three different endings in Robin and none of them could really be considered ‘happy’ – the best you can hope for is to manage to make it through another week.
