âThe truly mad are not content to merely tell stories; they have to act them out.â [Laughter] Thatâs Fanny Howe.
Chris Kraus interviewed by Sheila Heti
Men get praised when they do things that women are expected to do thanklessly.

You canât really do that with the first person: you canât turn the I into a clown, particularly if youâre a woman. People will say: âOh my God, she hates herself, I feel so sorry for her, she should get therapy.â The only way you can turn your female I into a clown is to make her a third person character. The material in Torpor was really more personalâI Love Dick was all shtick, people say it was confession, but it was all shtick, a stand up routine. Torpor was a much more personal book, and in order for it to be personal and psychological to that degree, I needed the freedom to move those characters around, as you can do in the third person.

For The Hunger Strike (1980), which Smith performed together with Faith Wilding and Leslie Labowitz, the artists made white signs that they displayed in a protest against the rejection of an equal opportunity law. During one of their art actions, Smith and Wilding saved Labowitzâs life when she collapsed, dressed fully in black, after an exhausting protest action against the current political situation.

Travis explains why ârecoveryâ gets blamed for ruining future feminist empowerment this way: In part because it still bears the traces of feminist consciousness- raising, but seems not to push its devotees toward collective action for social change, recovery has become a favorite scapegoat, seen as a narcissistic consumer lifestyle that lured women away from the movement and/or a corrupting virus that undermined it from within. YOU WILL BE PUNISHED
Producing a reflection of your image in Instagram always involves an awareness of the presence of others, the knowledge that your selfie is flaking and refracting in their phones. Labeling this reflection #selfie tacitly recognizes the horizontal proliferation of reflections, the dissolution of personhood in the network. The real narcissists are the ones who never take selfies. They imagine their self as autonomous, hermeticâtoo precious to be shared.
