to say thank you is just not enough. we are forever indebted to you. rest in the highest paradise, bell hooks.
I’ve seen a few shows and movies lately that had birth scenes in them, and I’m starting to have this creeping feeling that a lot of birth scenes in film and television feel like torture porn. It’s always just several minutes, sometimes longer, of a close up shot of a woman’s face as she screams and moans in pain and agony, usually with her makeup still intact and generally meeting conventional standards of beauty while there’s these long agonizing close up shots of her screaming and wailing in pain.
Gotta ask yourself, especially when so many of these scenes come from male directors and writers, why are these scenes of women screaming and wailing in pain for minutes on end so common and necessary in the first place?
Then that’s got me thinking how even outside of birth scenes in films and shows, I feel like scenes of women in anguishing pain where there’s several moments of her screaming or moaning in pain and close up shots of her face while she screams or wails in pain are eerily commonplace, but most of us probably don’t think about it or question it cuz it’s just so common and normal in media to have scenes that are basically soft-core torture porn of women.
This might’ve already been done, but I’m just gonna leave this here
OP is dead on the money. Birthing scenes in movies are straight up torture porn in the most literal sense. Most horror scenes of women experiencing intense pain are framed in the EXACT same way that porn frames women’s faces.
it’s crazy how being terminally online in “woke” circles can literally just circle back to conservatism and bigotry. like i once saw someone on here say that women’s-only spaces were inherently bad because it sounds “terf-y”. like congrats, you just reinvented sexism. are any of you okay?
“we should not exclude trans women from women’s spaces” SHOULD NOT lead to “actually women’s spaces shouldn’t exist at all. deal with the patriarchy <3”
