No offence but you know what's really weird about America? You've got hardly any history past a couple of centuries. No medieval castles, no Roman walls, no bronze age settlement sites. Is there even anything for archeologists to dig for?
People have been here for quite some time, they’ve only been white for 500 years
As an American studying archaeology this ask filled me with a seething rage
Chaco Canyon. 1250 A.D
Monks Mound 900 A.D
Montezuma Castle, 1100 A.D
Temple Mound, 500 A.D
Just because they aren’t traditional western style buildings doesn’t mean they aren’t there. These are only a FEW examples of the monumental architecture built by Native Americans in the US. The “prehistory” of America is as vast and varied as whatever is in Europe.
I never understand people who will travel so far to see Stonehenge or Roman ruins but completely discount Cahokia or Mesa Verde. There are SO MANY amazing ancient sites in America. And most of them are comparatively little-known and visited.
I think a difference in Europe is that they seem better at coexisting with their history - there are cities where you can see modern buildings next to ones from the Middle Ages. Our (surviving) ancient sites in the US aren’t in the middle of major population centers, which makes them easier to overlook. I don’t think that’s entirely a bad thing, preservation-wise, but it’s also not an excuse for forgetting they exist.
Folks I live in Atlantic Canada and I’m an hour away from an archaeological site complex that’s at least 11,000 years old, suspected to be 13,000 years old. That’s nearly three times older than the Great Pyramid at Giza. The Wabanaki are called the People of the Dawn for a reason. Come on.
There are multiple temple mounds within 10-20 minutes of me on the gulf coast of Florida that date back more than a millennium, and were actively inhabited areas before the Spanish showed up and committed genocide.
And a whole bunch of Native American people built around astrological events just like Stonehenge. Except they weren’t just using the solstices that happen every year. No, they were using the major lunar standstills which only happen every 18 years.
There are places where Native Americans were building cities without an agrarian lifestyle. Hunter gatherer cities! That is completely different from how western civilization developed! How cool is that! How aggressively does that up end the idea that hunter gatherers were inherently more primitive than agrairian cultures.
The fact that I didn’t learn about any of this until I was in my 30s and actively seeking this information in my own time is criminal.

With the extension of the quarantine comes the extension of financial need. As of right now we are housing 12 students ages from 18-22. Most of which are first generation to go to college. The end goal is to get those who have a home to go back to on a plane as soon as financially possible. Thank you for all those who have donated and those who will donate. What’s the difference here?
The first woman is a real human being. She controls her own body and has her own personality. She has control over her own actions and can make autonomous decisions in her life. She also has to directly deal with the people around her and the bigotry, stereotyping and harassment that she is exposed to. She is real, she has emotions, she has thoughts, and she has rights.
The second woman is fictional. She was created by other people who exert full control over her body, appearance and actions. Her sole purpose is to be literally bought and sold for the entertainment of an audience. She cannot make her own decisions, she cannot control her own body and she is not real. She is not responsible for her behavior or appearance: She is the product of the environment that she was created in.
The first woman, by virtue of being a human being who identifies with the feminist movement and acts in accordance to those beliefs, is therefore a feminist. She is actively participating in feminism and is choosing to dress herself in a manner of protest that best demonstrates that she alone controls her body, and that no others have a right to access her body without her consent. She is a multi-faceted person who has agency, and part of that agency includes the ability to look sexy while refusing to consent to her own dehumanization. Her actions are not only one small part of what makes her a person, but she is also participating within a cultural trend of protesting rape culture.
The second woman, because she is not autonomous and was designed by a series of outsiders, is sexist because she is the passive product of sexist content creators. She exists as an ornament. Her clothes were chosen as fan service so that she can be sexually available and gratifying at all times, most likely for straight male gamers. Her erotic appearance has little functional purpose other than to please an audience. And since she exists within an industry that is consistently criticized for ostracizing female participants and creating a large gap between the depictions of male and female characters, her appearance is simply one detail within a much larger array of sexist problems.
