What’s that like fifty-eight bucks?” “What’s something like that pay?” “Overworked, stress related injury.”
“Do you have any bandages?”
Alistair set down the sword he held and reached into his pouches to search, finding one thin roll left. He took it out and reached it over to her. "Would this be enough?" He asked, looking at her with slight concern. While he was glad he still had some to give, it would have been better without the use of any at all.
“Sorry about the blood trail. I might have gotten a bad gash.”
Alistair couldn’t believe his eyes. All that blood that he had been following had been hers all along. He was afraid of what might have happened had he not rushed to find the source. He ran up to her immediately and looked her over to see if he could spot it, knowing he had to act fast.
“Don’t you worry, we’ll get this taken care of, okay? Just hang on.”
“Are you alright?”
Alistair would have been startled by her, had he not heard her footsteps. Without turning, he considered her question. He stood a bit away from the camp, looking down the road in deep thought. He had his arms crossed and was leaning against a tree.
“It’s so quiet,” he spoke, his voice just above a whisper. “After all the fighting and noise, it’s a good change.” Alistair cleared his throat and turned to Caitlin. “How are you holding up?”
She nodded her head in agreement, coming up the rest of the way to stand beside him. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything so loud in my life,” she admitted softly, not wanting to break the still night air. With a laugh, she added, “Including the occasional fireball or potion gone wrong back in the Circle.”
She glanced down at the question. It was all still very new and very raw, she felt light headed from how fast events had passed. “I think I’m alright,” she nodded. “It was, it was all just a bit much at once.”
Alistair thought about her words for a moment as she answered his question. It made it all the better that she was easy to talk to, that he could get along with her. What with all the other wardens being out of the mix, it helped not being the only one.
“You fight well I’ll give you that,” his expression turned into amusement, “and before you know it, you’ll be juggling cheese wheels in no time, that will definitely stop the Darkspawn in their tracks! Maybe even… Orlesians.”
“Juggling - ?” She stared at him for a moment, but the look on his face had her laughing. Her hand came up to cover her mouth, not wanting to break the stillness of the night with the sound (old habits of stay quiet, stay safe). It took her a moment more to catch her breath, but she managed to giggle out, “Oh Maker, anything but Orlesians.”
The fight was gruesome to say the least and she truly hadn’t expected to need so much combat magic in her life. She recalled the way a darkspawn had tried to cleave her fellow warden in two, the man’s shield and quick movements all that had kept him safe. “You’re sure you aren’t hurt though?” she asked softly.
It was refreshing to hear a laugh than the usual grunt or groan he’d get whenever he’d attempt to joke. He kept his expression up and ended it with a smile.
Alistair nodded and waved his hand, “It was a tough fight, I admit, but at least we got out of there in one piece... more than can be said for them, anyway.” He glanced at the trees that he had been looking at, but then his attention went to her once again. “How are you doing with the uh... the rather pleasant dreams?”
“Are you alright?”
Alistair would have been startled by her, had he not heard her footsteps. Without turning, he considered her question. He stood a bit away from the camp, looking down the road in deep thought. He had his arms crossed and was leaning against a tree.

“Does anyone know first-aid?”
“That’s a pretty bad bruise, man.”
“You definitely need to go to the hospital.”
“Where’d you get all these cuts?”
“Lie down. Sit somewhere, you need to rest.”
“I’ll get the ice.”
“I can’t believe you got yourself beaten up again.”

Alistair looked at Bethany with a sad smile, his brows knitting together in desperation. He moved his hands to her cheeks and leaned in close, feeling her breath on his and his on hers. He could smell her, the sweet summer and spring, how she smelled like flowers and warmth and home. His heart yearned for her, and if it had arms it would never let go of her, but much to his dismay, he had to.
“I wish it were that simple, my dearest, dearest...” he couldn’t wait until he finished his words before he kissed her, wanting to push his love into it. After the small, lovable little kisses he gave her, he pulled away only a little and breathed against her, “...Bethany.” His heart couldn’t take it. First, having to leave home, then the chantry - although it wasn’t that big of a loss - and now her.
It wasn’t fair.
“I’m scared, hold me!” -zevranrp
“Why are you so easily startled?” asked Alistair in a nonchalant voice, holding Zevran tightly, hoping that in the protective way he held the elf, Zevran wouldn’t see that Alistair was just as frightened. He needed the embrace probably more than Zevran did, but then he wondered if Zevran had said that on purpose just to get him to react this way. Alistair wouldn’t be surprised.

“I’ve never seen so many kittens in one place.”
“Come on, just one bite.”
“How do you accidentally buy sixty birthday cakes?”
“I never imagined you were so… ticklish.”

When they got there, Alistair had no idea how things would unravel. He knew that Bethany had family in Kirkwall, the same family affected by the same blight that took her away from him once. When they got to Kirkwall, he found himself keeping an eye on her more often than not. He didn’t want to see anything happening to her. He wouldn’t have wished her to have gotten into trouble in the Deep Roads the way she did, even if it meant they would spend time together once again.
When the attack began, Alistair didn’t leave her side. His heart raced and quivered at the thought of leaving her alone. He knew that she was more than capable, and that she was much stronger than she seemed, but he didn’t want to leave her to the wild fate of the city. That was when his mistake turned things for the worst. Their position wasn’t the best, there were too many enemies around, and he turned his gaze for too long. When he turned back to Bethany, there was a rather large Qunari headed straight for her, charging with his large hammer. Alistair’s heart seized in his chest for a split second, and then he ran towards her, almost screaming her name.
When he got to her, he pushed her out of the way, receiving a hard blow straight to his chest from the large hammer. He was thrown back immediately into a pile of rubble and stone, and he fell limp on his back. He could hear her and the fighting for the one moment that he was conscious, before his eyes fell shut. The last thing he could remember was being afraid. The air had been knocked right out of his lungs, and the sudden shock and pressure from the blow absolutely stunned his body and he was unable to react. Until he heard a small ring in the silence.
The sound itself felt like it was shimmering into coherence, and slowly, the words became clear. He didn’t know what it was, the moment he had to recover, or the pure will and heart and soul of the woman that was crouched just above him. It brought him back, it brought him right into consciousness and his soul did not give up as easily as his body had. Slowly, his lungs worked and pushed to bring in some air, and he sucked in a raspy breath, his eyes opening only slightly. The pain was immense and beyond measure, but the only thing he wanted to pay attention to was the very live and very vibrant Bethany that looked down at him, that held him, that caressed him. That alone could keep his heart alive.
