YOUR SHIP IS NOT CANON UNLESS THE CREATOR(S) OF THE SERIES SAY/S IT IS
I am getting really tired of shippers saying “MY OTP IS CANON!!!!11!!1” when in reality, they misconstrue every tiny thing to make it a shippy moment.
Listen, I know you love your ships, I get it, I really do. I myself have ships that I’d go down with. But you really need to keep things in perspective. Not every little thing is about the ship. Contrary to popular belief, males and females can be just platonic friends without having to be romantically linked. Hayao Miyazaki said it best:
“I’ve become skeptical of the unwritten rule that just because a boy and girl appear in the same feature, a romance must ensue. Rather, I want to portray a slightly different relationship, one where the two mutually inspire each other to live - if I’m able to, then perhaps I’ll be closer to portraying a true expression of love.”
The “love” Miyazaki is referring to is platonic love, the kind of love shared between friends. For example, Gajeel Redfox and Juvia Lockser from Fairy Tail are friends, and they share a bond with each other that is stronger than I’ve ever seen, yet Gajeel is male and Juvia is female. My question for you is, if they are of the opposite sex, then why aren’t they shipped together? Is it because of Juvia’s obsession (and yes, it is obsession) over Gray Fullbuster? If it hadn’t been for Gray, would Gajeel and Juvia have been shipped together? This example clearly proves that platonic love between members of the opposite sex can and does happen.
Now there are different kinds of ships, but I’m going to go with just two kinds: “canon” ships and crackships. “Canon” ships are really just ships that have the potential to become canon given the material/format of the series BUT ARE NOT CANON. For example, it’s clear that Elfman Strauss and Evergreen of Fairy Tail get flustered with each other and are quick to deny their dating status when it’s obvious that they have romantic feelings for each other.
Crackships are just that, crack, completely non-canon, meaning they have absolutely no potential at becoming canon. There is no evidence that they share romantic, or even platonic, feelings for one another. For example, Rogura (Rogue Cheney x Kagura Mikazuchi, Fairy Tail) is nothing more than a crackship. They have not interacted nor shared a panel in the manga, and no, the scene in the “Welcome Home, Frosch” episode where Kagura wants to take Frosch home with her is not canon as it never appeared in the omake chapter that the episode is based on (it was purely added just to make the episode longer).
I know the status of a ship can be blurred between “canon” and crack, but this just illustrates my point further: until the creator(s) of the series come/s out and say/s “_____ is canon”, no ship is canon. You’re allowed to believe whatever you want about your ships, but outright saying it’s canon is a lie until proven otherwise by the creator(s). This also doesn’t give you the right to bash other people’s ships because yours is “canon”.
TL;DR- YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT TO SAY A SHIP IS CANON UNTIL THE CREATOR(S) SAY/S IT IS.
