Sitter:
Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812 – 1870) was an English novelist, journalist, short story writer and social critic.
Dickens was one of the greatest Victorian novelists, with a reputation that endures. His best-known works include Oliver Twist (1838), A Christmas Carol (1843) and Great Expectations (1861). His novels are renowned for their vivid portrayal of the Victorian class system, and address issues of injustice and social deprivation. Dickens was friends with the artist of this portrait, Daniel Maclise. ‘Maclise has made another face of me,’ Dickens wrote, ‘which all people say is astonishing.’ An engraving of it was later used as the frontispiece to the first edition of Nicholas Nickleby (1839).
