Zoom guitar... again.
Teaching on Zoom now. My pupil is currently playing an easy version of ‘Fly me to the Moon’ and… Eric Clapton’s version of ‘Crossroads’ (which is a bit more difficult). Yes, he’s doing both acoustic and electric (not at the same time… b’dum tish..) #guitarlessons #guitar
One spring Sunday in London -and guitar things.
Ooh, bit of sunshine at least for a bit. Electric guitar lesson on Zoom in half an hour. Young pupil sitting a guitar Grade 6 exam today -and he should do very well, which is gratifying.

'Tarleton's Riserrectione' by John Dowland (1563–1626). Played in concert at the Rustique Café, Tufnell Park, Camden, London July 2013 Richard Tarlton (?- 1588) was the foremost English actor of his period. Dowland's piece is an homage to the man. The guitar is a Yamaha concert GC15d which I have had for nearly half a century.

An old doodle done with electric guitars, bass and software instruments in 2006. Done in (I think) Garageband. Lots of things I would change but original files are lost, so this is what it is.

'Come Again' by John Dowland (1563=1626) Verity Lingard-Hill, voice Flavio Matani, guitar Rustique Café, Tufnell Park, July 2014
John Dowland was the foremost amongst the English Renaissance lute composers. His music often has the curious characteristic of a lively, happy sounding melody together with often melancholy, reflective or even morbid lyrics.

Guitar exams, Spring 2026
This term, two of my young private pupils are undertaking a Grade 6 guitar exam with Trinity College London, at which I expect both will be doing very well. Another young pupil will be doing a Grade 4 guitar exam with ABRSM. A couple of my pupils at one of the schools I teach guitar at are also going to be doing grade 1 to grade 3 exams. I also have a couple of mature students preparing guitar…
Pavana de Consonancias y Redobles' by Luis Milán (c. 1500 – c. 1561) a Spanish vihuela composer. The vihuela was a guitar-like Spanish renaissance instrument, with a tuning identical to that of the English lute.
This was recorded in concert at @cafepalestina in Kentish Town. There are a couple of minor bloopers but it is a live recording,

Cancion del Emperador Narvaez Rustique 25 2
'Canción Del Emperador' is a setting for vihuela by the Spanish composer Luys de Narváez (1526–1549)) of the song 'Mille Regretz' by Josquin des Prez. I have had the pleasure and honour of playing it with the singer Ruth Pritchard. In this occasion it is just the vihuela setting, transcribed for guitar.
This take recorded live in concert at the Rustique Literary Café in Tufnell Park on 25/07/25. The guitar is a Yulong Guo Chamber Concert.
Mille regretz de vous abandonner Et d'eslonger vostre fache amoureuse Jay si grand dueil et paine douloureuse Quon me verra brief mes jours definer
A thousand regrets at leaving you and leaving behind your loving face, I feel so much sadness and such painful distress, that it seems to me my days will soon dwindle away.

The auto-pilot and other stories
Of course I am not a neuroscientist, only a musician so I don’t really know this is how it works, but from my long experience of these things, it would seem that when we are half-way learning something, your brain decides it already knows it and doesn’t have to consciously think about the sequence of movements, notes etc and sends it, to put it that way, to the automatic sub-systems-and that’s…
Alonso de Mudarra .(1510 – April 1, 1580) was a Spanish Renaissance composer for the vihuela. His most famous work may be the 'Tres Libros de Música en Cifra' ('cifra' in this case doesn't mean 'cipher' but tablature). I mostly follow Emilio Pujol's transcription; which I was a bit suspicious of at first given its age but having checked quite a bit of that music with the original tablatures I do believe he did a very good job with these pieces. The guitar is a Yamaha GC15d which I've had for nearly... half a century (isn't that scary). The tuning is changed to E, A, D, F
