Incoming text from Mom: “Jelena, where are you? The show starts in 15 minutes!”

Gigi rolled her eyes as she glanced in the direction of her illuminated phone. Her attention was immediately turned back towards the little bump of white powder on the edge of her house key. She inhaled the powder in one quick breath, wiping her nose and checking her reflection in the mirror in front of her. After all, she had a show to walk within minutes and she couldn’t be caught with any lingering powder on her for photographers to capture. With a quick splash of water on her face and one last glance in the mirror, she was ready to make her appearance backstage.

“Where the hell have you been?” Yolanda said with gritted teeth the moment she spotted Gigi’s entrance backstage. “Chill mom. I was in the bathroom,” she said nonchalantly. It really wasn’t a lie, since the bathroom just happened to be the location where she took a bump of coke. Her mother scoffed, clearly annoyed with her attitude and behavior. Even though Gigi had lost a good amount of the “extra weight” her mother always nagged her about, her mother now started nitpicking other things as ways to break her down. Her powdery friend seemed to be the solution to keep her focused on her career, especially since there had been somewhat of a distance between her and Ashley lately. She wasn’t entirely sure what was going on between them, but she didn’t exactly want to spend too much time pondering it. Instead, she turned toward the immediate distraction that made her feel like everything was okay.

The stage manager for the fashion show guided her to her place and counted her down for her big entrance. The model smoothed down her hair and outfit one last time before taking her stance and strutting out onto the catwalk. She felt every last atom of her body bursting with confidence. Every step she took, she knew everyone’s eyes were glued to her. She flashed a few posed looks towards the cameras, just like she was trained to do. She could hear the ooh’s and aah’s of the observers in the front row, completely adoring the beautiful dress she was sporting. Gigi was on top of the world and completely invincible. She had all the focus on her for once, and it wasn’t all about Bella. Especially since her sister was nowhere to be seen when it came to this show. This was finally her moment to shine and her beaming mother backstage was just proof of that.

Gigi gave one last pose to the audience before she disappeared off side stage. “That was perfect!” Yolanda exclaimed with open arms as Gigi welcomed the rare affection from the woman. With all the criticism she gave her on a daily basis, it was rewarding when she was finally praised for her hard work. She couldn’t help but think it wouldn’t at all be possible to make and keep her mother happy without the help of her white powdery friend. After all, she wasn’t abusing it. She only used it when she needed it. That’s what she kept telling herself, all while she continued to try to hide her new best friend to those most important to her.
