To be a child again...For just a day. For just a moment. The innocence, the joy, the carefree nature...When Itachi is turned into a child, the Akatsuki members realize a few things about themselves, and a lot about Itachi. Not crack. COMPLETE

I happily ignored the occasional spelling and capitalization errors in favour of appreciating the highlight of this fic: the contemplative way that Itachi, his childhood, and his character were illustrated.  It is a lot of cutesy child-Itachi fluff, and I definitely loved that aspect.  But it was also a pretty damn good exposition on Itachi as a person that I didn’t expect when I clicked on the fic.

It’s not that long, and it’s fairly heart-warming.  If you like the Akatsuki, give it a go.

In order to cement a truce between the two villages, Konoha and Iwa exchange recently graduated academy students. Fortunately, if anything were to go wrong, Haruno Sakura was just average enough to risk losing.

This hits every spot.  It is a powerful sort of rewrite that takes a what-if situation—what if Sakura was sent to Iwa on exchange—throws in pre-Akatsuki Deidara, refuses to believe that females are inherently weaker and more useless despite the fact that chakra exists (Ino in this fic!!!), and genuinely considers the repercussions of Sakura having confidence and power and a loyal, mutual connection with Deidara.

With impeccable syntax and a just-descriptive-enough narration, this fic shoved and pushed its way up into my “favourite DeiSaku” list. Authors will often sacrifice facets of Deidara’s character when writing any sort of romance for him, the facets that endeared me to him in the first place; I truly feel that this fic does none of that. When you consider the character growth that must have occurred, Deidara and Sakura stay true to themselves.  Read to the end—you’ll see what I mean.

My only criticism was on certain plans and actions of Sakura, before I remembered that she was still about 13 at the time.  It’s easy to forget that when reading canon-verse Naruto.

This is really short but I have to save it. The second-person Russia POV was nailed by this author. If you went by canon standards, you might call Russia a little OOC—I personally find fanfiction based solely on canon portrayals of the characters shallow and often distasteful, so this was very nice. I love a softer Russia.

I am in love with both the tone and the style; they work together to create such a gentle, introspective atmosphere. But, I have to pick at the many consecutive short sentences in the fic because I find that they break the flow. Other than that, the syntax was impeccable. I really have such a bias for this kind of style.

SuFin. Modern/Human Medical Office AU. Tino came to the sudden realization that he had fallen in love with his strange, quiet, prosthetic-tinkering, workaholic, kind-hearted boss, Dr. O. Berwald had his heart stolen by the cheery office assistant since the first time he laid eyes on Tino's penmanship. About love, tragedy, and family coming together. Updated weekly.

Technically speaking, I found that the fic had good grammar; there was a period or two missing maybe, but nothing noticeable on my first read.  It was perhaps a bit choppy in pacing.  I did really like the sutble cameos made by other canon characters.

I quite enjoyed this FinlandSweden.  Although it takes place in a clinic, the actual plot revolves around Finland and Sweden in the first half and trying to be a family in the second half.  What’s especially nice is that the author has at least a working knowledge of the process of dealing with prosthetics, as they said that one of the clients was based on their father.  I am a little less impressed with the therapist process…but it might be due to personal reasons.  All in all, I found that the serious issues were dealt with in a satisfactorily realistic manner.

What if Severus Snape had taken Hermione Granger under wing secretly during her time at Hogwarts? What if Draco Malfoy really wasn't the bigot he let everyone think he was? (Follows canon mostly up until the end of GoF, and then detours off into AU territory w/Severus as father figure)

I fully admit I am a sucker for this kind of premise; I am easily taken in by plots full of secrecy, unlikely friendships, and hidden badassery.  I spent much of my time reading this 100 chapter fanfiction feeling overwhelmed by the sense of closeness between family and friends.  (I stayed up very late two nights in a row to finish this.) To me, that kind of closeness only exists in fiction, and I have a very good time absorbing what I can there.  There were so many moments where I was absolutely giddy with the teamwork and skill shown by the characters I have known since childhood. I love when everyone has a unique ability.

(Also, those Durmstrang boys.)

The fic is not free of typos and some errors that could easily be fixed with a thorough proofreading—nothing that distracted too much from the writing.  I did find many moments extremely cheesy and noted the author’s penchant for making everything work out just right.  The fic avoids conflict where it can, and the family I mentioned beforehand only grew larger.  Everything worked out as if in a really good dream, but it is a satisfying read considering canon plot.  One thing I genuinely found off-putting was the way nearly everyone was shoved together in a relationship à la Naruto 700.  However, the HermioneViktor was rather well-developed.
