"rubes, hey. talk to me. who did this? i need to know."

while they'd spent much of their teen years in each other's pockets constantly, ruby had understood when eddie told her that now that he was in the position he was, it was safer for her not to be seen with him quite as much as they were used to. apparently they hadn't been careful enough, she had looked more friendly and familiar with him than she should've, and the wrong person had seen them out and about, living their daily lives.

"there was..." she wiped her face, trying to be stoic, to act like she wasn't as injured as she truly was while the swollen eye and cuts and scrapes that littered her arms and chest said otherwise.
