Field Mouse - Episodic
WILD!
Field Mouse - “The Order of Things”
When a relationship doesn’t get its feet off the ground like the way you had been so sure that it would, life can feel off-kilter in all kinds of respects. “In the order of things / Where is my place?,” Field Mouse’s Rachel Browne wonders out loud on “The Order of Things,” the latest preview from the Brooklyn-and-Philadelphia indie rock act’s forthcoming sophomore effort Episodic. In relation to the LP’s early previews “The Mirror” and “Out of Context,“ the narrative this time around is a much more introverted conversation than those heard within its predecessors, sung more like an open letter to the unrequited with the soft-strummed melancholy guitar pop Browne and her bandmates emote matching the fleeting uncertainty within her musings. “I’m tired and I want to take up space / I’m lonely and I want to see your face,” she admits, but it’s a rhetorical declaration. She knows the answer isn’t the one she wants to hear, so she may as well figure out a way to be her own best lover for the time being.
Field Mouse’s Episodic will be released August 5th on Topshelf Records.

“Out of Context,” the final track on Field Mouse’s forthcoming record, is not your typical album closer. Lead singer Rachel Browne fights hard to stay level, tie up loose ends, and walk off. And she succeeds for two verses! Her band, however, can’t help but incite her to go out with a defiant bang, one that leaves those loose ends even more frayed: “But I’ve got a few years left / misunderstanding sentiment / of being younger than you thought / of shaping up to shake the rot!” Browne declares, presumably to some soon-to-be ex friend or lover. For a band that sounds like it might follow a certain indie rock blueprint from afar, Field Mouse certainly strays from the formula on this chorus-less, lyrically dense song. Their diversion makes a bit more sense considering Episodic’s robust guest list (Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz, Allison Crutchfield of Waxahatchee and Swearin’, Joseph D'Agostino of Cymbals Eat Guitars), but even so, “Out of Context” is a distinctive swimmer in an ocean of

Don't let the gentle intro fool you: This song pulses with frustrated energy and demanding rhythm as Rachel Browne rages against a wrongdoer.

This Saturday at Market Hotel!
Ten years ago today, without a clue or even a basic understanding of how to run a label, we started Topshelf Records.
Thank you for all of your support throughout the years — you have no idea how important it is to us. Running a small business is incredibly difficult, stressful and emotionally draining work — but it’s always worth it because of the amazing peers, people and artists that build and support and fuel this entire community that we’re very humbly and happily a small part of.
Beginning now everything we have ever released prior to this year is downloadable for pay-what-you-want for the next 24 hours. If this gets 1,000 notes, we’ll extend it to 48 hours.
THANK YOU.
-Seth and Kevin
Happy Birthday Topshelf!
