Columbine Meadow Rue - Thalictrum aquilegiifolium is named for the columbine-like leaves that the plant has. The flowers bloom into a beautiful cluster of light lilac to white. It is spectacular as a single specimen plant in the garden. Or, when planted en masse, it can create a charming cloudlike effect. Winter is a great time to leave seed heads on your garden. The seed heads provide a good source of food for migratory birds in the fall and winter seasons. The backyard shed garden is planted, irritated, and mulched! Yellow, purple, lime, blue, and black hues in the plantings help create a tranquil and subtle backdrop to the adjacent patio. I am taking advantage of the shelter and shade of this giant oak tree to try to add some new plants in my repertoire. Some plants like a very particular environment. This small area is perfect for experimentation, i.e. Robust Male Fern and Green Velvet Boxwood. Ferns need organically rich and moist soil. Finding conditions in Colorado can be a challenge, especially in our heavy clay soil. This bed location has a sandy loam soil. The shade, soil type, and protection make this area a microclimate. Microclimates are areas in the landscape that vary from the remaining environment because of structures (house, gazebo, etc). Oxalis regnellii 'Green O' - False Shamrock This bulb is easy and beautiful as a houseplant. It grows in dabbled shade in nature, so I keep it near an east facing window to capture morning light. Like most other bulbs, allow soil to dry between waterings. This will prevent rot and disease. After the spring and summer equinox, I top dress the oxalis with a small amount of compost. The bacteria in the compost will help breakdown dead roots and plant material. The plant does go through a dormant period like most bulbs. This happens after the growing season in spring and summer. Do not fertilize in dormacy. TIP: A great thing to do before buying a new houseplant is to research the native region of the plant and mimic the natural environment. This helps in those costly mistakes when it comes to rare and larger plants.
