Happy birthday to the unparalleled Alma Thomas. Thomas, who was born on this day in Columbus, Georgia, spent most of her life in Washington DC, where her family moved in 1907 and where she later attended Howard University. “Hydrangeas Spring Song” is a masterpiece of the museum’s collection, created at the apex of Thomas’s career. Painted when she was eight-five years old and struggling with arthritis, Thomas deployed short, bursts of blue paint to capture the budding energy of springtime and the joy of painting.
