Critical Race theory is a very important component of the HB999 bill. If passed, this would ban all teachings of critical race theory in university. It would shut down courses, majors, and minors related to critical race theory about studying oppressed groups. It is important to understand what CRT is. It is not a threat to education, but rather a means to understanding discrimination and racism within this country.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF WHILE PROTESTING

We all know that violence erupting during protests is not a new phenomenon. It's inevitable. And while we don't want to think about it, we must at least be aware of how to stay safe in the event of brutality by law enforcement during a peaceful protest. Recently last month, students at the University of South Florida were brutalized by police for protesting proposed budget cuts to diversity and equity programs by Florida governor Ron Desantis. Here are some tips to stay safe while protesting

avoid direct police contact

do not run

use ONLY water to treat pepper spray

protect your cell phone privacy (turn off face ID, disable location services and Siri, turn off notifications)

have a trusted friend not at the protest to ensure you make it home safe

cover identifying tattoos
