Hi!! I’m Filament and…I don’t know how I got here.
I don’t know where Brother Aspen went, either…But I don’t want to go to Sibling Thomas. So….maybe I’m stuck here.
Hello my child.
How are you?
-@elderamarah
Mm…I’m fine….
That is good.
Are you caught up on your studies?
Yes, Elder Amarah…I am…
Hello my child.
How are you?
-@elderamarah
Mm…I’m fine….
In the empty, quiet house, only Lux was roaming, finding a sense of peace in the dark. But something clattered, and they heard footsteps.
Filament was not supposed to be awake. Elder Amarah had told her countless times to at least stay in her room. But she did not listen. And thinking no one was around, she ran right into Lux, stumbling back at the content.
She squealed at the sight of them, but couldn’t run. It was like her legs were glued to the ground.
…she still wasn’t wearing her robes.
@filamentforeverforsakened
They jumped slightly at her squeal, involuntarily stepping away from the source before correcting themself.
They blinked several times, lowering their gaze to the cultist now. Their pale eyes fixed on her, the rest of their face still cast in shadow.
With a rustle of fabric, they cleared their throat. Certainly it wouldn't be too difficult to speak to a young child, would it?
"Sister Filament... what are you doing, roaming the halls at such a late hour?"
Lux spoke in a half-whisper, tilting their head ever so slightly. Strands of their sleek black hair fell across their face, and they did not correct it.
"I recall Elder Amarah requesting you to remain in your dorm.."
Unfortunately, it had not occurred to them that the sight of a ghostly older person dressed in long, dragging robes in the middle of the night down a dark hallway could potentially scare someone like Filament.
“Ummmm…”
Filament looked at the floor, and took a few steps back. She murmured something under her breath, before speaking up in a timid whisper.
“I saw Sibling Thomas talking to Elder Amarah…I think he—…th-they saw me. They did. Yes…”
Filament was terrified of Thomas (or, Two Time, as they liked to call themselves), so of course seeing them so late at night where she could get in trouble was scary.
”…i was trying to find Brother Aspen…”
Brother Aspen …Lux assumed most had retired to their beds by now, including Azurewrath, but perhaps not. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they had misjudged.
Though, they rarely met the botanist on their little night ventures. Perhaps they just frequent different parts of the grounds? They liked to trace the same path every time, anyway, it’s not hard to avoid them.
They hoped he wasn’t avoiding them…
“My apologies… I have not seen Brother Azurewrath tonight. Mm… they may be asleep, considering it is quite late.”
He could be with Two Time aswell, they’ve seen the pair together in the early hours of the morning too many times to count.
“…Is there something wrong with Two Time seeing you? I find they are rather kind.”
Did that come off rudely? They weren’t sure, cold gloved hands fidgeting under their layers as they watched the child’s expression.
”oh…..well….i might wake him up, then.”
Filament finally glanced up at Lux, then flinched back at the harsh glance of their eyes (or maybe that was just the exhaustion..?)
“Um- uh, mm…they’re always praying, and mumbling to themselves…And talking to Elder Amarah……Brother Aspen keeps trying to make me talk to them.”
The girl didn’t have a solid reason as to why she disliked Two Time. Maybe it was their quick talking, or their utter devotion, or the way they talked down to her like all the others.
“…please don’t tell elder amarah im here…”
It made sense to some extent, at least, never mind how common the traits Filament described were.
They didn't exactly love her view of their companion, but it wasn't their business to poke and prod.
"Do not fret, sister..that was not my intention.
"Though, your safest route would be to follow your given and return to your dorm.."
They had no real authority, only authority born from the child's fear..but perhaps that would work? Going directly against your elder's instructions meant going against the word of Spawn. One cannot disobey the word of the Spawn.
”B-…B-B-…But…! Aspen- I-…B…No no no, Tho—!”
Filament tripped over her words, and as she backed away, tripped over her feet. She fell to the ground and scurried into an open room, whining over something. A sound akin to shrill sobs.
She glanced outside to see if Lux had left, but obviously they hadn’t. The child probably thought they couldn’t see her…
The hat on her head slipped down her face and she took it off only to hide her face in it. Someone was probably sleeping in that room, but Filament didn’t seem to notice. When she realized Lux could still see her, she whimpered into her hat.
“thomas is gonna do something bad to brother aspen…”
The girl was crying over the thought that her family would get hurt.
They watched her from outside the room. Their fingers gripped the doorframe hard enough that they turned sickly white, but in the near complete darkness they didn't notice.
Elder Amarah instructed Sister Filament to go to bed. One cannot disobey their elder. One cannot disobey the Spawn.
"..They will not harm him."
Their voice came out too cold, but they were only dimly aware of it. It wasn't important.
One cannot disobey their elders. Disobeying your elders means you disobeyed the Spawn, which is unfaithfulness to the Spawn. Unfaithfulness to the Spawn leads to punishment.
Punishment was painful.
Movement stirred in Lux's peripheral, sending a shudder down their spine like cold water and bringing them back to their senses with a dull shock.
Swallowing dryly, they let go of the doorframe, creeping forward and crouching down to slowly lift the hat away from the child's tear-stricken face. They slipped the fabric of their sleeve over their hand, gently wiping her tears with the soft yet cold fabric in a way they hoped was comforting. They shouldn't have spoken like that, definitely not to a crying child. They're disgusting and now they need to fix this, somehow.
"Sister Filament...I sincerely apologise, but p... please, return to the hallway..."
They whispered now, pushing back the dread that was starting to rise in their stomach.
Filament leaned more into Lux, trying to muffle her cries. She knew that someone could hear them, maybe Elder Amarah would hear them…That would be terrible.
She recalled how Elder Amarah said that disobeying orders from him was disobeying the Spawn. She was taught to follow the Spawn’s teachings, but…It never exactly felt right. While other cultists spent their time worshipping and making sacrifices, Filament was just trying not to bring too much attention to herself.
“…Amarah told them to…They said…They asked Thomas, who they favored more…And Thomas said Amarah…And Amarah said they had to prove it, and gave them a knife. A…small knife. I don’t remember what it was called, b-“
Filament’s nails dug into Lux’s back.
“I don’t care if Thomas gets punished for it, they can’t kill Aspen! Tell them they can’t!!”
Tell them…
There was nothing to tell them. The mission given to one by their elder is one passed from Spawn Himself. There is nothing to say, nothing to tell. After all, they are all children of the Spawn, who is merciful and loving, servants of a higher purpose born to be guided to an end bigger than themselves. Lux cannot interfere with matters out of their control - they, too, are a servant of that purpose. Even if that purpose becomes a greater priority than your greatest treasures… your greatest companions…
But Filament didn’t understand. Perhaps she was too young, or perhaps she is misguided, but that didn’t matter - the only thing that mattered was that Lux needed to find a way to convince her to return to her room before they are both punished.
Now opting to pat the young cultist on the back in what they considered a gentle manner, they spoke again in a hushed whisper.
“Sister, please, I- I understand you are concerned, but, mm, we must take our leaves - for if we do not, we will be next to be reprimanded.”
Begging for the searing pain to stop when it only gets worse while you are bloodied and bruised with no end in sight to your suffering, only because of the sins and misdeeds committed by your own two hands.
They felt the slight throbbing of their temple under their bandages again but pushed it aside.
”…”
Filament stood up, rubbed her eyes, and looked back up at Lux. She was calculating a plan in her head. She checked in front of her, and behind, then grabbed Lux’s sleeve to tug them down the hallway.
“C’mon, come on, come!!”
Obviously, Lux was pretty hard to move, so Filament let go and rushed down the hall expecting they would follow her. Her boots thumped on the floor, loud enough for anyone to hear. But…This wasn’t the way to her room? Was she really still going to go to Aspen after all of that?
“…Do you hear that…?” A faint voice asked another from a few rooms away.
"Sister Filament!"
Lux scrambled to their feet, their whispered protests falling to deaf ears.
This was... really bad... Other followers were probably starting to stir now, and both of them would get caught, and this time they doubted the Elders would be so merciful as the last...! They'd had a brief moment of relief, thinking the girl would go back to her room, but-
They froze, the soft thuds of their worn shoes on the wood coming to a halt as they flattened themselves against the wall.
The familiar coolness of the stone, pressing against their face... a comforting sensation, but also a terrifying one, serving to really just stick their reality back in their face.
Someone was truly, really awake - multiple someones if they were asking something. They hoped they were only imagining the creaking of a bedframe... Please don't get up, please don't investigate...
Oh, they should get Filament; they should stop her-
How? How could they stop her?
...No time to think it through.
They inhaled deeply and rushed forward. Their fingers, still warm from the embrace, clasped around the younger follower's arm.
"Who's there?"
They heard someone whisper, right before they set off in a ( hopefully not too loud ) run down the other corridor, the opposite direction, to the closest exit out of this maze.
Oh, Spawn save them both, please, they would do anything in return...!
”Woah-!”
Filament struggled to keep up with Lux’s fast pace. Of course the pursuit wasn’t as quiet as they had hoped for it to be…But it was better than whatever Filament had been doing.
“Where are we going??” Filament asked nervously. This wasn’t the way to Aspen’s room, she knew. And someone was definitely behind them. She heard voices, two of them. Most definitely Amarah and Thomas.
Suddenly she stopped dead in her tracks. Oh, god, what if they couldn’t find Aspen and he was gonna die and Amarah would find her and Thomas would smile that awful grin they always wore and Filament would di-
She screamed. She screamed and cried at the thoughts and she didn’t move. Surely she just alerted the two to her and Lux’s location, but she didn’t seem to think that through.
They flinched, letting go of her arm on instinct.
What is she-
What had she done?
What is she doing?!
The sound somehow hurt, splitting through their head like an axe, going through like the blade of a knife. A splitting headache, blocking out any coherent thoughts...
They were ruined, both of them. What do they do? What could they do?! There was nothing, nothing their useless hands and shaking legs could do - they were doomed from the beginning, doomed always and doomed now, a useless vessel, a terrible follower.
Spawn forgive them in the next life, but they hadn't earnt another.
They forced themself to breathe, to let air back into their lungs. The approaching footsteps drew closer. They glanced down at the crying girl, unmoving.
( I'm sorry... )
They weren't strong enough to carry her away, and they weren't smart enough to devise a plan.
They were disgusting for what they were about to do and they knew it.
Lux exhaled, turning and running out the exit, slipping through a crack in the door with their robes billowing behind them.
Spawn, forgive them. Spawn, please...
They barely made any progress before stumbling onto the hard cobblestone path outside and falling to their knees.
( Forgive me, Spawn... please, grace me with your wisdom... I am so disgusting. )
Breathing hard, they lifted their hands together in prayer, clasping them so tightly their fingernails drew blood between their fingers. It hurt, but they deserved it.
( Spawn, Great Spawn, please, give me guidance ... I'm so sorry ...Spawn, please, save Sister Filament ...)
Their words were incoherent even in their head. Were those tears sliding down their face? They weren't sure. They could still hear the screams from inside, filling their head with a buzz.
( I don't know what to do ...)
Even from outside the house, Lux could still hear those gut-wrenching sobs. Filament wasn’t ever meant for this terrible place. She’s a child. She has no place here. She wasn’t raised correctly and it shows.
“There you are!” Elder Amarah’s cold voice rang out, and Filament screamed louder.
“Ohhh, there’s the girl! C’mere-!” Two Time’s crazed tone sang, as they picked up the kicking girl and lifted her off the ground.
“Filament, what the HELL is wrong with you?!” Elder Amarah shrieked. “Why didn’t you stay in your room?! Why did you run?! The Spawn should demolish you for all the ruckus you’ve caused-!”
“Elder!” Two Time cut her off. They held Filament a little closer. “Spawn’s sake, don’t raise your voice…!”
“Don’t you tell me what to do!” Amarah snapped, and yet he still went quiet.
“…You were looking for Azure, weren’t you?” Two Time’s voice dropped to a lower mutter, almost soft, but Filament refused to answer. She still tried to push Two Time away. It was a facade, they weren’t nice, they were pretending!
She couldn’t see the worry in their eyes.
In the empty, quiet house, only Lux was roaming, finding a sense of peace in the dark. But something clattered, and they heard footsteps.

filament seems nervous talking to them.
……are you awake?

hmh,,?
ah, yes, hello young one.
how may I help you?
……i had a…..nightmare, again…..
…….about azure…….
I see.
..do you wish to sit with me for a moment?
-[ they hesitate for a moment, but place a hand on her head in comfort. ]
Do you wish to speak of it?
….it was when he died. i had a nightmare that the House was so quiet. and no one bothered to ask me if i was alright.
-[ they’re silent for a while, in contemplation. ]
.. well, I’m aware you were closer to him than to me, but you can come to me if you need anything.
I’m sure that Spawn is taking utmost care of him.
It has to be.
……i don’t think it is……
…
Well then, let us at least hope it is.
It is NOT!
Filament is not angry, rather…Extremely upset. It’s not sadness.
If it was, it would’ve brought him back, wouldn’t it have! Isn’t that stupid Spawn all about second chances?! Why didn’t Azure get a second chance?!
I-,…
-[ they seemed surprised by her words for a moment, before sighing. ]
Please lower your voice, elder Amarah might hear..
I understand. He.. yes, he should be back. I don’t know why he isn’t.
He deserved- deserves it more than anyone.
..but there is nothing to do now but hope. Hope that perhaps it is taking its time.
Filament went quiet. She blinked her eyes, trying hard not to start crying in front of Two Time. …
That ultimately failed.
…is that thing even real? the spawn? was elder amarah just saying all of that to make me feel better?
-[ they paused, not quite sure of what to say, their hand shifted to pat her back. ]
..I would believe so, yes.
The Spawn is my truth. It’s… what I have left.
But I understand your doubt.
i think if it was real, it would’ve worked already.
The girl sounded like she was trying to be resentful, but she was just crying. Mourning. And she didn’t know that the exact person who killed Azure was right next to her.
…do you actually still believe in it??
-[ they sighed again. ]
..I have to. It’s what remains for me. The path I’m on.
Azure was dear to me. I need to believe he’ll return. I need to believe in the Spawn.
She was going to get in trouble if she went on. She was already betraying her supposed faith, if she asked any more questions she’d surely be punished.
But…
…you have a dagger, don’t you? i saw elder amarah give it to you…the day before…did you…?
-[ sitting in silence for some time, they shifted to hold onto their Spawn necklace. ]
.. my dagger, yes. I owned it before, but.. Amarah gave it to me with… with an order.
-[ they look like they’re desperate to believe that their choice was the only one they could’ve made. Their shoulders re hunched and grip on their necklace is tight. ]
Filament rubbed her eyes, making it a bit harder to see, but she still glanced at Two Time.
…what kind of “order”?
She was going to connect the dots at some point.

……..umm, sibling two time……..?
filament seems nervous talking to them.
……are you awake?
@filamentforeverforsakened
hmh,,?
ah, yes, hello young one.
how may I help you?
