Happy Accidents
The sky outside the car window is grey and dreary, offering Shouta little distraction from his own thoughts or even the irritating string of cotton and lace wedged in the crack of his ass. He could ask to stop at a rest station to fix it, but they’d already overslept and had to rush out of the house just to make their check-in time. Hizashi had been in such a hurry that Shouta had barely gotten his pants pulled up enough to hide what he was wearing before the eager blond was dragging him down the hallway.
They’d grabbed the suitcases stashed by the door the previous night and then reminded Toshinori about how to reach them if he needed anything. They’d kissed each of their kids – Hitoshi, Denki, and Eri – in turn, and then made them all promise to behave one last time before dashing out the door.
He can’t remember now if he’d reminded Toshinori about the special way Eri likes her apples cut up or that she prefers the creamy peanut butter with them instead of the crunchy that Hitoshi likes. He’s tempted to pull his phone out and call them, as if he hasn’t already called them twice in the last hour alone. His line of thought is broken when they hit a bump in the road and his body jolts. The thin lace edging of his lingerie pulls painfully, pinching the fat of his thigh and he lets out a small, irritated groan.
“You okay, Shou?” Hizashi’s hand finds his, lacing their fingers together and then pulling them to his face to plant a kiss on scarred knuckles.
“I’m fine.” Shouta smiles softly at the sweet gesture as he shifts in his seat, trying to ease the tension on his sensitive skin before giving voice to his worry. “Do you really think Toshinori is the right person to watch the kids while we’re gone?”
“He’ll be fine.” Hizashi pokes Shouta’s thigh playfully, careful to keep their hands laced together while he does so. “He’s got Hitoshi and Denki there to help him.”
“That’s not the comfort you seem to think it is.” He cocks an eyebrow at his lover and smirks. Shouta can’t help but think about the last time he’d left the duo together at the dorms and how he’d had to replace the microwave and several towels after they’d accidentally caught the kitchen on fire.
“Would you rather we left Nemuri in charge?” Hizashi teases, chuckling at the small twitch of his husband’s lips, something he knows Shouta does when he’s trying not to scowl.
Shouta huffs softly, refusing to even dignify that with a response. Instead, he pockets his phone and turns his gaze back out the window to the dark clouds in the distance. “Looks like it’s going to storm.”
“Well, it can’t rain all weekend, can it?” Hizashi’s smile falters for a moment as his eyes turn skyward, but it returns quickly as he focuses back on the road and its array of construction signs. “And even if it does, this place has an indoor pool, a jacuzzi… even room service. Oh, and there’s several nice bars just a few blocks away. The website said the view’s supposed to be spectacular too – overlooking the ocean and everything.”
Shouta brushes his thumb along his lover’s knuckles as the guilt sets in. “Zashi, are you sure we can afford this?”
“Don’t worry, Shou.” Hizashi beams, straightening in his seat. “I got a hell of a deal. Besides, ever since we got the kids, we’ve been all about them. Zoos and aquariums, little festivals and parks... It’s time we took care of us too.”
“Logically, I know you’re right.” Shouta forces a small smile; he knows how hard Hizashi had worked to put this all together for them – their first weekend away from the kids – and it wasn’t like their children wanted for anything. “We deserve this.”
He had wanted to make it special too, hence the still-uncomfortable lingerie string wedged up his ass. He knows how much Hizashi had liked this set when they’d walked past it in the mall. And while they had both balked at the price tag and lamented the current lack of privacy in their home, Shouta had gone back the next day to snag it and then promptly hid it in his closet, promising himself that he’d wear it as soon as the opportunity presented itself. It was the first thing he’d thought to pack when Hizashi had announced their little excursion, and in his excitement, he had opted to wear it instead of just bringing it.
The silence they fall into as they drive is easy and comfortable, broken only by the soft sounds of Hizashi’s favorite radio station, the pattering of the increasingly steady rain, and the occasional bump as they hit, yet another, pothole. It’s only a few more kilometers until Hizashi is turning left into a small parking lot. The building looks older than he’d imagined, but Shouta knows better than most to not judge a book by its cover.
Hizashi lets out a small, uncharacteristically nervous chuckle as he parks the car. Golden-green eyes are dragging up over the dingy exterior, and faded sign lettering. “Must’ve been an old photo on the website.”
“I’m sure it’s really nice inside.” Shouta meets his husband’s half-smile with a more genuine one of his own as he leans in to steal a kiss. “We’re going to have an amazing time no matter what.”
“You’re right.” Hizashi’s smile grows wide and real at the sweet kiss and his husband’s faith in him. “You stay here while I grab the luggage and get us checked in.”
Hizashi darts out into the storm before Shouta can stop him. The rain is coming down harder, running rivulets over the windows and obscuring his view. He takes a moment in the relative privacy to run a hand up under his shirt and feel over the delicate lace covering his chest. He imagines what Hizashi’s hands will feel like on him, letting his eyes fall closed for a moment as he envisions it. He gets so lost in the thought that he almost misses the door opening and practically has to shove his hand in his lap to avoid being caught.
The storm outside is raging and Hizashi looks more like a drowned cat than a man. His long blond hair is plastered across his forehead and down his back; his clothes are soaked, but he waves the room key triumphantly and holds out a hand to help Shouta out of the car.
“I could have helped with the luggage, you know.” Nor did he need help getting out of the car, but Shouta knows his words will fall on deaf ears.
That sweet smile is still gracing his husband’s face as he’s pulled out of the car and led into the hotel. The carpet beneath their feet is threadbare and oddly sticky in places. Hizashi’s smile falters slightly as they pass by the under construction notice on the door to the indoor pool and Shouta squeezes his hand reassuringly.
There’s a soft groan at the bright yellow out of order sign on the elevator, but they still manage to laugh as they drag their luggage up two flights of stairs. There’s a man who smells strongly of cigarettes and sake standing next to their room. He’s leaning on the balcony’s railing, and he gives them an odd sort of smile that makes Shouta lock the door behind him.
Their room is small and cramped and Shouta’s pretty sure their bed at home is bigger, but it’s clean enough so he doesn’t say anything as they set their luggage down. Shouta glances out the window and finds that the view they’d been promised isn’t over the beach, but the barren courtyard between the hotel’s buildings. He lets the curtain flutter closed and hopes that Hizashi won’t look.
He can see how much this is all affecting his husband and it makes his heart ache. He walks up behind Hizashi and wraps his arms around that slender waist of his. He presses a kiss to damp, blond hair and lets his hands wander while he smiles. “At least we’ve got this place all to ourselves. No kids. Just us. We can make the most of it, can’t we?”
“That’s true.” Hizashi laughs, fingers lacing through Shouta’s as he turns around to steal a kiss. “It’s awfully hot in here though, isn’t it?”
Shouta smiles softly, tilting his head so Hizashi can trail kisses down his neck. They shuffle back towards the bed, giggling like they’re twenty again as they fall onto the stiff mattress. Kissing slowly turns to heavy petting, to Hizashi’s hands roaming over his sweater – too thick to give him a hint at what lies beneath – and Shouta smiles into the crook of his husband’s neck. He tugs on the hem of Hizashi’s shirt, pulling the now barely even damp fabric over his head and tossing it to the floor. He’s starting to sweat in his own heavy shirt and he’s eager to get it off, but Hizashi seems to be having fun taking things slow, so he’ll deal with it except…
It actually is kind of hot.
Shouta doesn’t say anything. He lets them continue even as sweat begins to pool along his lower back because he doesn’t want to ruin the moment. After a time though, Hizashi seems to read his mind. He motions towards the air conditioner and then presses one last kiss to Shouta’s lips before he stands.
Shouta sits up and gets as comfortable as he can with that irritating string still wedged up his ass while Hizashi presses buttons, turns dials, and even smacks the small, plastic piece of junk before eventually giving up and calling down to the front desk. A few mumbled words back and forth, and then Hizashi is turning back to him with a smile. With a technician obviously on the way, he hops back onto the bed, lays Shouta back and picks up right where they’d left off. Soft lips are pressed to his, slender fingers just slipping under the hem of his shirt when Shouta’s phone rings.
“Ignore it,” Hizashi groans the words out between kisses, his hands pulling at his husband’s slender waist until the man is in his lap.
“What if it’s the kids?”
“Toshinori’s got it covered.”
“You give that man way too much credit.”
The phone in his pocket falls silent and Hizashi smiles triumphantly. “See, it wasn’t that important.”
Shouta lets himself be pulled into another kiss, the phone call already forgotten, as Hizashi playfully rolls them over and presses him to the bed. Even in the oppressive heat of the small room, he likes the weight and warmth of Hizashi on top of him. His phone rings again and he grabs it out of his pocket without thinking. Toshinori’s bright smiling face stares up at him and his thumb hovers over the answer button.
“Shou…”
“If he’s calling again, he clearly doesn’t have it.”
Hizashi huffs softly before conceding. He presses a kiss to Shouta’s forehead and takes the phone. He stands up to pace while he talks to the man on the other end. Shouta watches, almost amused at the comical faces Hizashi makes as he talks and tries to make sense of the odd answers his husband gives to whatever Toshinori is asking makes before he finally hangs up.
“Well?”
Hizashi sits down and then relaxes back next to Shouta before pinning him under an amused grin. “Toshinori called because Eri ate peanut butter.”
“So?”
“So,” Hizashi chuckles. “Toshinori thought she was allergic to peanuts. Denki said that she was. Hitoshi said that she wasn’t.”
“If she was allergic to peanut butter, then why would we keep it in the house?” Shouta pauses for a moment, mind still trying to make sense of what his husband is saying. “Didn’t we even tell him that she likes peanut butter on her apples?”
“Apparently, Denki ate all the creamy peanut butter, so Toshinori put crunchy peanut butter on her apples instead.” Hizashi pauses, barely restraining the wide grin trying to break over his face, before continuing, “and there was confusion about the fact that both creamy and crunchy peanut butter contain actual peanuts.”
Shouta thinks to himself that they should have called Nemuri, but he doesn’t say so, just pulls Hizashi down to him so they can pick back up where they’d left off. This time it isn’t slow, mouths meet hungrily, drinking down soft moans as hips are squeezed and those hands finally make their way up under his shirt.
“Shit!” Hizashi sits up suddenly, eyes going wide as he pats his pockets. “I think I left the keys in the car. I’ll be right back.”
Before Shouta can protest his husband is gone, and the door is clicking closed behind him. He sighs frustratedly and stands to stretch. There’s a full length mirror on the back of the bathroom door and when he catches sight of the lace on his skin he makes an impulsive decision to just strip. He drapes his sweater and slacks onto the nearby armchair, finally pulls that damned string back where it’s supposed to be and really looks at himself for the first time.
He runs his hand up the long swath of skin between black lace that extends from his navel up to his throat. It should feel sexy, staring at himself like this, but it only gives him pause. He hasn’t worn something like this since he was in his twenties and back then his body was much better to look at. He closes his eyes and reminds himself that his husband finds him desirable. That this wasn’t for him, it was for Hizashi.
So, instead of conceding to his insecurities, he sits in the armchair across from the door. His legs are spread invitingly while he waits, a pose that he thinks is seductive, but feels silly the longer he waits. He eventually closes them and then moves to the bed. Hizashi still isn’t back and after a few more minutes, Shouta takes to pacing, arms crossed over his chest while he rethinks his decision. He’s almost talked himself into digging out a pair of boxers by the time the door finally opens.
Hizashi stands there for a moment with hungry eyes and a small smirk of desire on his lips. They go wide as he grabs the door suddenly and nearly yanks it closed behind him. “Just a moment, my partner’s changing.”
The realization that the maintenance man is out in the hallway and may have seen him has Shouta’s cheeks flaring red as he rushes to the bathroom and practically slams the door behind him. He sits down on the edge of the tub and listens as the two men talk in the other room. The voices are too muffled to follow clearly and without a decent distraction, his mind wanders. He second guesses his choices, reminds himself that he’s not the young man he used to be. He’s feeling silly and stupid and too old to even dream of pulling something like this off.
“I’m not sure what’s wrong with it to be honest.” This time the voice comes through clearly, as if the man is standing just outside the bathroom door. “I’d offer you another room, but with the storm coming in a lot of people have taken to riding it out and I’m booked full.”
“It’s alright.” Hizashi’s tone is light, but Shouta knows that he’s disappointed. “Thank you for taking a look at it for us.”
The man says something about the storm lasting all weekend and then the door to the hotel room bangs closed. The moment it does, the one to the bathroom opens and Hizashi’s hands are on Shouta’s waist, pulling him into a heated kiss.
“Did you wear this the whole way?” Hizashi guides them back into the bedroom, hands roaming over every inch of silk and lace. “Just for me?”
Shouta nods, lips too busy stealing kiss after kiss until Hizashi’s mouth trails down. He licks along sweat-damp skin, sucking pretty marks into every inch of exposed skin while hands grip slender hips. They fall backwards onto the bed, his shoulder draping off the edge. The instability of his position is forgotten in an instant when a hand cups his chest and squeezes it gently before thumbing over a pert nipple, but Shouta’s resulting moan is drowned out by the sudden, loud wailing of a baby.
Hizashi groans, head falling to Shouta’s chest with a small, exasperated chuckle. He tries to play it off and ignore it, brings his lips back to Shouta’s neck and eventually the sound fades into the background. Shouta’s fingers rake over Hizashi’s back, pulling him even closer as he turns on his side. He’s still dangerously close to the edge of the bed, but his husband’s arms are around him and he doesn’t care. They’re lost in each other’s arms once again and that’s all he cares about.
BANG
It sounds like a gun going off and with a sudden rush of frigid air along Shouta’s back, they come apart suddenly. Hizashi tumbles backwards onto the bed, but with nothing behind him Shouta falls to the floor, banging his bad knee on the hard plastic of the air conditioner unit. It hurts and, coupled with the renewed vigor of the baby’s wailing in the next room, and the worried look on his husband’s face above him, Shouta can’t help but lay on the floor and laugh.
It tapers off quickly and he smiles up at Hizashi before pulling the blond down with him. “I’m sorry that this didn’t turn out the way planned.”
Hizashi shrugs, a small smile coming back to his lips as he meets Shouta’s lips in a tender kiss. “At least I can enjoy the view.”
“About the view… Shouta sighs, eyes glancing quickly to the curtain before he forces a small smile.
“It’s okay, Shou.” Soft lips press against him, humming softly before Hizashi pulls back, a coy smile of his own as he rakes his gaze up and down the expanse of soft lace. “I wasn’t talking about the beach.”

Let the Willows Weep
Haruka’s ears are still ringing from the last explosion and the resulting bridge collapse it had caused. A tall building at the north end of the square is on fire and another one, smaller, has fallen into the street. Her eyes scan through the dusty haze, finding each of the guardians before she finally lets out the breath she hadn’t even realized she was holding.
Her eyes linger on Michiru and the gash on her shoulder. It had been close – for all of them – and something in Haruka hurts because she knows it won’t be the last time. She turns and walks away, the pain in her chest growing as she remembers the close call. If she closes her eyes, she can still see the grimace on Michiru’s face as the blade had come against her skin, the rush of blood that had stained white fabric red.
She knows now that it isn’t that deep but, in the moment, it had felt like the love of her life had been run through. Michiru is safe with Ami and Rei now tending to her and Haruka knows they’ll take good care of her. Usually, Haruka hates how they have to separate just to help keep their identities a secret, but today she welcomes the distance. She needs it to clear her head.
In an instant, the moment she’s around a corner and into a quiet alleyway, her sailor suit is gone – replaced with the ripped jeans and crop top she’d been wearing before the battle. Her car isn’t far, and she walks the two blocks in relative silence. Once she’s back in the driver’s seat, she turns the radio up, puts the top down, and she drives.
The farther she gets from the destruction, the more the city is coming back to life. Shops are opening back up. People are milling about. The world is moving on as if it’s forgotten already, but Haruka can’t forget.
Michiru stands, mirror in hand as she faces where the last blast had come from. She isn’t looking behind her, doesn’t see the villain closing in behind her, and Haruka is too far away. She shouts a warning and Michiru turns, but it’s too late…
“Shit.” Haruka wipes at her blurry eyes and tries to shove the memory away.
Once she’s on the highway, she’s going faster. Pedal to the floor until she can feel nothing but the wind in her hair and the music in her ears. Michiru should be beside her, smiling and holding her favorite hat to her head as she chastises her about driving too fast. They should be talking and laughing and complaining about their professors, but…
You could have lost her. You could have lost all of them.
Haruka’s smile falters. Even as the city begins to fade behind her and the surrounding lots fall to fields of wildflowers and empty portions of weedy pavement, she can’t seem to forget the smell of iron on the air.
“Neptune!” Usagi had been the closest, gotten to Michiru not long after she’d fallen to the ground while Makoto and Minako had battled the villain back.
She pulls onto the old, vacant air strip and punches the gas. She shifts gears as she accelerates until the scenery around her is nothing but a blur. Haruka had wanted nothing more than to run to Michiru when she’d gotten injured, but her duty was to the battle, to the Sailor Guardians and their world as a whole, so she’d continued to fight. It had felt like it always does when she has to make a hard choice like that, leaving a dark pit weighing heavy in her stomach.
All too soon she’s reached the end of the pavement and Haruka has no choice but to stop. She parks her car at the very edge and walks the short distance to a nearby tree. Before she had found Michiru in this life, she had come here often to just lay in the stillness and dream. Other than Michiru’s arms, it was the one place she’d found where she could just be still. Where not moving didn’t make her feel as if she were falling behind.
Haruka lies on the soft earth and closes her eyes against the sun. Here, the battle seems distant, the painful memory dulled, and she feels like she can finally breathe. The peace here settles in her chest and helps to recenter her. She’s almost fallen asleep when a shadow falls above her.
When Haruka opens her eyes, she finds Usagi’s face above her. She’s haloed by blonde hair and bright sun, and Haruka can’t help but meet that warm, friendly smile with a confused one of her own. “What are you doing here?”
“We didn’t want you to be alone, of course.” Usagi’s hands are clasped behind her back, head tilted to the side as she giggles, as if her answer was obvious to anyone.
“How’d you even find me?”
“Michiru said you’d be here.” Usagi points back towards the air strip, waves at someone in that direction, and then takes off. “I’m coming!”
Haruka props herself up on her elbows and watches as she goes. Both Setsuna and Mamoru’s cars are parked not far from hers and all the girls seem to be crowded around the vehicles and chattering excitedly. She can see picnic baskets and blankets being pulled out and it makes her smile softly to see the world moving on.
“You always come here when you’re upset.” Michiru’s voice comes from behind her.
She’s dressed in the same brown skirt and yellow top that she’d been wearing earlier, but all Haruka can see is the stark white bandage taped to her shoulder. The sight of it sobers her and makes her smile fade. “Michiru…”
“I’m alright.” Michiru’s voice is calming, her words punctuated with a soft, almost apologetic chuckle. “I’m here.”
Haruka shifts herself so she’s upright to lean against the tree and then holds out a hand for Michiru to take. The moment slender fingers are in her grasp the world seems to right itself. She pulls Michiru into her lap and buries her nose in emerald hair. She drinks in the scent of warm ocean water and perfume and lets it remind her that Michiru is okay. That they’re all okay.
