Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we must be saved by love. No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as it is from our standpoint. Therefore we must be saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.
Reinhold Niebuhr - The Irony of American History
The city had tremendous allure for me, as it did for many suburban kids growing up in the 1960s, and part of the reason I found it appealing was no different from what every other suburban kid felt: it represented freedom, glamour, and escape from convention. But to me there was also a visceral excitement, a true physical thrill, in the buildings themselves, their size and shape and energy. This place was not only big and bad, it was also the Emerald City, aglow with beauty and bedazzlement. I obsessed over New York; it was where all things were possible, and architecture was proof of its magical power.

Have a great weekend everybody - life is good!
Soulful as tits. Thanks Harry!
Top o' the marnin'
Shimmerin' sharps and flats. It's gonna be a great Saturday.
Seriously though, get a load of Louis Armstrong... If I didn't know any better I'd guess he was always hammered.
A great Saturday indeed.
Blurry bridge jaunt
Real catchy grooves delivered through singing hands. I do declare this might be the song of the week, and it's only Monday. What'll they think of next?
I had a date with the bridge. I think it's love.
The 80's had a beach party and St. Lucia was born. Not at all true, but MAN it feels right. I don't think they've put out a music video yet, but if I were any part of it, I'd recommend some kind of bollywood situation, or one of those flash mobs that everyone just can't refuse to join because it's so damn awesome. I'll say no more.
Break me off a piece of that
This weekend I broke out the dusty old nikon and got to clicking. I spent half of Friday at the Museum of Arts and Design. If you haven't checked out the exhibits, you've got until mid September so take a deeeeeep breath. I didn't get a picture, but they've got a glass mosaic of Biggie Smalls on display. Worth the $12 admission, I'd say. The pictures I did get start off with the wooden neanderthal skull-pture (HA...) a couple posts below. Glass and wood never looked so good!
That's not all... I finally made my way to Central Park. I scoped out the southern end of the park for a good hour and a half, just watching people watch people. There's no better place for that kind of thing because everybody looks good (from a distance) in an environment like that, even in the 90 degree heat. I'm not one for close encounters (or photos) when sweaty pits and swamp-ass abound. I'm not sure who is... Regardless, seeing people smiling and enjoying a bright day at the park is a pretty effective spirit brightener, and I'm all for it. I took a bunch of pictures there, so without further ado, munch on a few.
While we're in park mode, here are a few from Prospect Park on Saturday...
So that's only a fraction of the weekend, but keep your pants on. There's plenty more where that came from. Flickr's flirtin' with a whole upload queue of my photos right now, and they'll make their way here soon enough. Until then, enjoy the post-4th hangover. I know I will!
If you're prone to a nice head bob, you're welcome.
I'm well on my way
Yesterday marked the beginning of my 3rd month up here, 2nd in the new digs.
What can I say about life in New York?
So far, it's as chaotic as it is steady, as social as it is solitary, and as ugly as it is beautiful. Maybe a little more beautiful... Since I got here, I've logged more me time than ever. Lots of soul searching. It feels like I'm in a cartoon; like the second I stepped foot onto a Brooklyn sidewalk, the top of my head unhinged and my brain jumped out onto a culture bomb, which then exploded. I've been on an exploration high ever since, figuring out where my heads at personally and professionally, and I'm loving it.
I've met a ton of people, and I've learned to deal with timing in relationships. Going with the flow kinda comes as part of the New York package, especially when you find yourself in the thick of that weird 'getting to know you' stage. As ridiculously busy as everyone is, it's reasonable to expect to go a week or so without seeing even a close friend, let alone somebody new. Patience is a virtue, indeed. As the wise wizard Kanye West once said, "People in your life are seasons, and anything that happen is for a reason".
There are always opportunities for growth, for new connections, and for professional engagement. Every single day. It's a giant, dynamic and competitive marketplace, and there's a place for anybody with the right passion. If I ever need a reminder, all I have to do is look around, and I don't have to look very far. Without having some idea about who I am and what I'm doing here, it would be difficult to get something out of all that, but I think I'm in good shape. I'm the sum of my family and friends (who are all friggin sweet), and I'm here to work in global pursuits 'til I'm a real life architect. With the number and variety of people I could bump into any day of the week, it's only a matter of time before I hit that watershed moment. Never in my life have I felt more poised and better positioned to do what I want than in New York; although I'm not quite there, I'm well on my way.
If I haven't been in touch with you lately and you're someone that I know takes time to read this little brain dump of mine, I hope to hear from you soon. It means a lot to know you care, and I'll try to reach out when I can. Before I start squirtin tears, I'm gonna close this up with a little brass solo, courtesy of the No B.S. Brass Band... Turns out I can't post a video at the end of this text, so have a taste below.
