My practice concerns the idea of meditation achieved through repetitive and undeniably ritualistic actions. An inherent quality of calling these drawings rituals evokes the idea that they are performances in their own right. Much like lichen I believe my performative drawings chronicle my experiences in a very unconscious way. They are geometric for their rigid structure, but similar to lichen in the way that they form, each dot dictating the position of the next. These imperfections provide its unique organic form and I like to think of them as evidence of rich experiences. I approach the drawing after any experience, positive or negative and record it in the language of dots. Experience allows its growth, and the ritualistic performance is dependent on my own encounters. Like a mandala the creational process of these drawings is a meditation, allowing me to digest the tiny details of my life and record them in a visual form. The diptych is a ritual to embody the passage of time and the memories made. I am interested in the liminal state of rituals, which is the period of ambiguity and disorientation that occurs in the middle stages. The ephemerality of this constant motion and state of change is incredibly mesmerising and something that I achieve in the enjoyable and satisfying action of drawing.
